Never once got an offer from 28Degrees. Not sure why as I am opted into everything.

    • I used to get offers but haven't had any for years.

    • same here. Maybe it's cos I have a low limit and don't use the app

  • I also never received any offer from 28 degrees. I called them and they said I was opted into all marketing.

  • On my Last price protection claim got no response from the company

      lve had the opposite experience.
Always very responsive and claims approved pretty quickly.

I know theyve changed providers or something that requires you to upload a copy of the statement for a claim, but apart from that mine have been going through fine.

  • Isn't purchasing a gift card a "cash equivalent" transaction? If so, beware, you will probably be charged interest from the day of the purchase, no interest-free period.

    • +1

No as far as Latitude can tell purchase of a gift card is just like any other purchase from Big W so no interest will be charged.

It depends on whether the card issuer thinks:

      • A gift card should be treated as “cash-equivalent”, and
      • A merchant should be treated as “cash-equivalent”.

Generally speaking, card issuers will look at the transaction information provided by the merchant and then make the determination whether the transaction should be considered as “cash-equivalent”. For example:

      • If I spend $100 on a gift card instore at Coles, the only information reported to a card provider is that $100 was spent instore at a Coles. Coles should use the Merchant Category Code (MCC) of supermarkets, which is something a card provider can also see. Based off that, a card provider would have a hard time determining whether the $100 was spent on a gift card or groceries or tobacco products, etc etc etc.

      • If I spend $100 on a gift card at Prezzee, the only information reported to a card provider is that $100 was spent online at the Prezzee website. Although Prezzee has previously used a MCC of a miscellaneous general merchandise store (which does not seem like a cash-equivalent MCC), Prezzee is known to primarily be a business selling gift cards. In that case, if a card provider thinks gift cards are “cash-equivalent”, they could choose to designate any transactions at Prezzee as “cash-equivalent”.

The only notable example I will call out is Commonwealth Bank, as they have a history of treating some merchants selling gift cards as selling cash-equivalent products. Two recent examples are:

      • Giftz.com.au - the online gift card portal operated by Blackhawk Network, one of the major players in the gift card business. (Commbank stopped treating this website as cash-equivalent in March 2023.)

      • Giftcards.com.au - the online gift card operated by Coles Group.

On the other hand, I have purchased gift cards from multiple online gift card portals using other credit card providers (e.g. AMEX, Westpac, NAB) and have never had a purchase treated as a cash advance.

      • All hail to the WookieMonster!

    • I feel like this would be a pretty awful trap of questionable legality if so, since they would essentially be tricking their customers to get a cash advance with these offers in the guise of a purchase.

FWIW, I've bought plenty of gift cards (both store ones and prepaid visas, both in-store and online) with different credit cards and have not had anything be considered a cash advance.

  • I'm hoping for a huge payout from the Latitude data breach.

Huh, my 28 Degrees keeps being declined when I try to buy something from Special.

    • Same here. It happened with a CBA credit card when they had the same offer twice.

    • Same issue with me, i got an SMS noting the decline and asking to confirm if it was me. I did, response was i can continue using the card. Still getting declined.

  • I was going to post earlier this morning that I usually get these offers, but didn't get these ones, but figured I'd wait and see. Sure enough, just got the email with these offers.

  • Nice, I was also targeted for Citibank offer so can pick up 2x $100 Wish GC for $20 CB each!

    • Where to buy the $100 Wish GC and get $20 CB?

  • Unable to use the card on special without Mastercard ID check, and the sms just won't come through with the one time code. Any chance I will get the cashback from Special if I use Apple Pay with the same card?

    • I am having the same issue. Anybody been able to successfully purchase this and get the ID check working? (I can confirm the SMS confirmation works for logging into Latitude online services).

@SidComp did you end up purchasing using Apple Pay?

      • +1

Hi mate! Sorry for the late reply. I’m new to this. Yes I did use Apple Pay, after latitude customer service advised that I would be still eligible for the cashback. It’s been 8 days now but still no cashback. Might take a few more days.
EDIT: just got the 10$ cashback today! 😄

  • Waste of time. Get Mastercard ID Check pop-up: "For your added protection, this transaction requires authentication. We have sent you the secure code in a text message to ********".

But the text message never arrives.

    • Sure they have your correct mobile number?

      • Yes, I've had my 28° Mastercard and mobile number for many years and successfully used them together with security codes before.

A number of others have reported the same problem with this deal in the comments above.

    • Same issue! Tried too many times on different days. Never received OTP SMS.

Someone above reported getting success with Apple Pay, but I got declined payment with Google Pay.

    • I ended up using ApplePay and the $10 cash back came a few days later as per @SidComp.

  • Have tried to check out via directly entering card details and also Google Pay on both mobile and desktop but continually get a 'Your card has been declined' error after entering the SMS OTP code. Unfortunately have to revoke my upvote on this one. Seems to be an issue with Special as I also received this offer on another credit card but that card also declined.

Thanks. I bought $100 super shopper gift card and then bought $104.16 Woolworths gift card through NRMA.

There was no Mastercard ID check or any SMS verification required. Could be because I have an old special account from previous deal?

    • So the Super Shopper gift card could be used as a payment method to purchase Woolworths gift cards at giftcards.woolworths.com.au? That's an interesting pathway if so - extra ~4% value!

      • Yep! Worked for me and several people over at citi deal too

        • Damn, and here I am, a dummy that redeemed a Woolworths gift card directly from Special… T-T I'll remember for next time!

  • I recently had the same Mastercard ID Check failure trying to use my 28° Mastercard for a purchase on a different gift card site - prezzee.com.au. Today I called Latitude to ask about the problem. I was told that it is a Latitude-specific problem affecting ID Checks for all cardholders.

"Our team is working hard to resolve this problem."

I experienced the same problem when trying to purchase the Prezzee USA Black Friday Smart eGift Card but get this - the supplementary card attached to it, which is under a different first and last name, works. Go figure.

      • Thanks for the tip. I tried using my additional cardholder card and the ID Check SMS came through! But then when I entered the code I got:

        Your card has been declined.
Seems there's been an issue with your payment. Our apologies. Don't worry though, you can try again

So I give up. There was a question anyway about whether the purchase using the additional cardholder card would have qualified for the Latitude cashback.

I've found this to be hit and miss.
