  • Thanks, Anna PailofShit and Elmer Fudd for Scoot bailing out of the Gold Coast, blocking competition from Qantas. Just what the people all needed.

    • People get the government they deserve.

    • +5

I don’t know what you’re on about. Australia has allowed increased flights for Singapore airlines into Australia. And besides because Gold Coast is a second tier city in Australia any foreign carrier can fly unlimited services into GC.

So many airlines used to run services into these second tier cities and they all pulled out because it’s unprofitable. Garudas A330 service into Townsville lasted for a month.

      • +1

Garuda running a whole ass A330 for Townsville is crazy wtf. they would barely get a 737 working.

        • +1

2015 was the last commercially serviced date when Jetstar operated A320s to Bali. (ADF pushed JQ to end it - even though it was full year around)
2013 that Garuda A330 service was a charter by the Indonesian Govt but also had commercial seats going, however it become not commercially viable after the charter ended, Garuda went in alone and axed it a month later.
Before 1995, Cairns didnt exist and airlines such as Cathay Pacific, JAL, ANZ ect operated into Townsville with destinations in North America and Asia.

As it stands, Townsville's International Terminal is still used, often for charters (MEL-LAX may not be avail so MEL-TSV-LAX is common), government flights and international general aviation (when YBCS is not avail)

And there are talks of a Newcastle - Townsville - Denpasar route on the tables for the ADF blokes.

    • +1

What are you on about - if there was enough demand they would still be flying here. People whinge and moan but don't back up their complaints with actual patronage, so the service was lost.

      • Tiger Scoot and Air AsiaX - all competing out of GC. Not enough room for all. At least the best remains - though that Scoot GC - Europe was a good option.

        • Tiger is scoot

    • Singapore and AU have an open skies agreement. Scoot can run as many flights as they want to as many ports as they want.

      They just choose not to

      • +1

That just allows for the airline to run services into a certain country.
Singapore was fighting to get top tier slots in SYD and MEL (A380 compatible gates, gates close near to SQ infrastructure and meets their times for onward connecting flights or optimal arrival times for pax) - it took them a while but now they can actually fulfill their operational needs.

  • +15

I should stop looking at these. They just make me sad about how much we spend on Christmas break flights.

    • +3

Right. I paid $1500 return to KL AirAsia on this Christmas!!

    • +1

Oh how I agree. I've paid $2.2k to fly Melb/Bangkok and back. For NYE.

  • +2

TY going to Kuala Lumpur in May now for $920 (2 adults) yay!

    • How long is your stopover in Singapore for each leg?

      • +1

        ~ 2 hours

        • That's very good. Long stopovers via Perth the last time I checked the PER-KUL route.

  • +9

    Never again with Scoot.

They cancelled our flight to Europe after we were through security in Melbourne. We then got ourselves to Europe on another airline after Scoot said we wouldn't get there for another 3 days. Once we'd arrived, Scoot emailed and said we were a no show for our original flight so they cancelled our return flight. Customer service was a joke through the entire process with the "investigation" to take 21 business days.

Currently out of pocket over $10k for our original Scoot flights + the flights we ended up needing to book to get to and from Europe. Still waiting on a refund from Scoot.

    • Does travel insurance cover any of that?

      • +3

Waiting to hear back about that still. Had a night of lost accommodation that we are trying to recover as well.

    • -1

Why didn’t you just charge back the transaction?

  • +1

The checked luggage costs from Melbourne to Hong Kong……… $202.99 EACH WAY!!!!!!

    • +1

Well it’s a LCC…. What did you expect?

      • Well…I reasonably expect total costs with checked luggage should be lower than non-LCC’s. Otherwise it’s meaningless to choose LCC, rather I will just buy flight tickets from Cathay Pacific or Qantas.

        • +2

maybe some people just dont need Checked baggage?

          • +1

@TexasVujicic: “Some people don’t need checked baggage” is out of scope for this discussion. What it is discussed here is why the checked baggage cost for LCC is so expensive such that this makes no material differences between total air fare of a LCC against non-LCC

            • @onl97: Because what leftover space they have in the luggage compartment is often used for freight, which assists in keeping it profitable.

Or, if there is no freight to push, the less weight on the plane the better, and this calls for a much lower fuel burn.

    • +1

Hmm I wonder why they're so cheap and how they make money..

  • +5

    bring back GC flights ;(

  • +1

i remember way back when they launched in Australia and snagged their first sale fares to celebrate this occasion $69 one way to singapore

we got 4 return flights for under $600 on a brand spanking new plane.

    those were the days,

    • +1

We got that deal as well! So good!

  • -1

    Never again with Scoot.

All Scoot flights are through Singapore, frequently with a 12 hour wait there.

Scoot charges like a wounded bull for checked in luggage, so a return flight is 4 sectors.

4 X checked in luggage fees = a huge amount.

    • +6

Well they are a Singapore-based carrier, so where else would they transit? Also it's low cost carrier, of course they're going to sting you for luggage.

    • +2

All Scoot flights are through Singapore,

weird gripe to have a for a SIN based carrier?

      • +1

How is “they don’t offer direct flights” a weird gripe?

        • thats like getting shitty because cathay stop over in hong kong.

          Like Emirates stop in Dubai

          Like Qatar stop in Doha

Like Singapore ALSO stops in Singapore.

its a singapore carrier, part owned by singapore airlines. its gotta have a home base somewhere. they dont operate on a point to point venture because international it just isn't feasible as such.

          • +1

@TexasVujicic: You’re mischaracterising it. The complaint is that the flights stop anywhere, not that they stop in Singapore.

The alternative is that they’d be direct flights, which is preferable.

      • +1

Well, its a major cost of time and money to have to stay in singapore for a night.

I can pay $363 return to Thailand, but it would be a $50+ hotel in Singapore + food and transport. Plus I lose an entire day and also can't do much.

Or I can wait for a Jetstar sale and basically pay the same, except leave Melbourne at lunch time and get to Thailand the same day while stuff is still open for a $2 dinner.

        • +1

It's similar with Singapore, every time I fly from Adelaide I've got like a 6 to 20 hour layover in Singapore

That's why I'd rather fly with Qatar to Europe, literally a 2-hour layover. 22 hours total flight time

    • Firstly Singapore is a pretty good destination to transit through, and secondly Scoot has a 10kg carry-on allowance, more than many other LCCs, so unlesss you are going somewhere very cold or for an extended period you shouldn't need checked baggage.

  • +2

    12 hour wait there

That's an incentive in itself :-D

Spending any amount of transit time in Singapore
is a bonus for me, especially when you have
decent food options inside the airport, but landside.

  • Add checked baggage and cost blow off

  • +1

Thanks - Just booked a cheeky trip to Singapore for the wife's bday in Feb. ;)

    • +1

      Name checks out

  • +7

Just do a total cost including luggage. Just took Scoot last month and it was fine as I was expecting an LCC.

    Good:
    1. New plane, clean, left on time.
    2. Check-in and transfer was smooth
    3. Changi airport - always enjoy going through there. Even better if it wasn't middle of the night.

    Bad:
    1. Scrum and rush for boarding. 5 queues and no idea which one to be on.
    2. Food options. Basically the frozen food section in any Coles but triple the price, pretty small. Tough with little kids who don't anything with 'sauce' which is pretty much everything except instant noodles.
    3. Lack of free water and only 1 drink if you go on a 8+ hour flight. We did take our own water but their no outside food or drinks is enforced somewhat.

    Watch out for:
    1. No screens on their seatbacks so bring your own entertainment .
    2. No amenities unless you buy the comfort pack with mask, blanket. Bring your own. LCCs just give you a seat and a plane that moves (eventually). Everything else you buy

If it was within $200 of a full-service airline ticket I would've taken the full-service but for my trip the full-service was $500 more (Phuket via Thai Airways). So saved the $2000 (4 pax) and put it towards the hotel.

Wife's verdict: Liked 787 in the middle three of the 3-3-3 layout, found the A320 single airline a bit more closed in and didn't enjoy it. But end of the day everything went pretty smooth.

We had a horror last year with Jetstar which would've been our choice this year otherwise. They're on our 'no fly' list until we start hearing good things again.

    • +1

You just pretty much described my flight to Bali on Virgin, but mine was a crappier commuter plane

  • With cheaper flights transiting Singapore I wonder how many people would be willing to risk skip-lagging for a trip to Singapore.

    • +1

      Username checks out lol

  • +2

Damn, I like the price, but the Singapore stopover is a killer if you're trying to go somewhere else. I get it, people love the giant shopping center (airport), but I really dislike Singapore and/or spending Australian prices for junk food or hotels for 12 hours of wasted time. Easier to wait for a jetstar sale, despite their reputation they have been fine for me in the past.

  • Has anyone actually taken one of the Europe trips successfully? Is it worth the saving over a real airline?

    • I've done Berlin to Sydney one way precovid with one piece of luggage. It was fine. I had spent 9 months travelling so was indeed saving some money but it was honestly fine. Just gotta bring your own entertainment. And yeah they will spot your maccas and bite your head off, but are better about it if you bring cold snacks. Would I do it again? Probably, but only if I was going to Athens or Berlin (or close to Berlin).

    • +1

Did Melbourne - Singapore - Athens return in 2019.
Worked well in our favour, the 10kg carry on was enough so we didn't need check in (Greek Summer/Autumn so able to pack light clothing).

Brought our own entertainment and pre-booked our meals. It worked out way cheaper than any other carrier. One plane (sorry don't know the models) was huge and the other a bit cosier (180cm, not much keg room). Planes seemed new and well maintained. Staff were great

  • Scoot is honestly the worst airline I have ever flown. I am saying that as someone who travels on 2-3 flights a week and have flown AirAsia X every week to KL for the last 6 months. AirAsia is better in almost every way.

When scoot has sales AirAsia usually matches, book a better airline.

    • Damn, I want your job where you get to travel internationally every week!!

      • All personal travel, I have AirAsia super so my flights are very cheap.

    • Thank you for the heads up! What makes it so bad?

      • Access to drinking water is a big one. They charge $3SIN for 300ml and quite often you won't have access to your own because of the gate style at Singapore being security at the gate with no access to fill water after.

They also banned taking your own food on board and I have seen first hand them deny boarding if you refused to bin your food. Again just to make money off of you.

Australia arrivals are not organised and often you will be waiting at the gate for an aerobridge, I have waited for 3x over 30 minutes at PER this year for them to get staff for the aerobridge. They do not organise arrival at airports correctly.

They have tried to deny boarding for me because apparently, I was not on my previous flight on my ticket. Questioning how I ended up in Singapore if I wasn't on the previous flight wasn't sufficient evidence according to them.

        • Oh god that does sound awful. Will steer clear, thanks

    • +1

Wow, I think I would go crazy if I was flying a low cost carrier airline every single week. Ouch!

  • Love the price and would be a good deal if travelling with a big family, But need to do a Long lay over in singapore and need to stay the night from Syd - BKK trip as an example

    Thanks for the share anyway
