The issue with only type c port is you won't be able to use it with older devices unless you use a converter. While micro usb devices have been phased out for a while, they are still prevalent in today's society.

    • unless you use a converter.

      Huh ??????????

      • For example if you need to charge a device with micro usb port, you will need to use a type c to micro usb converter.

Whereas if the charging port has USB A, then you can use a more standardised USB A to micro usb cable.

why would you need a converter?

I just use a cable. It works fine…

Is this the introduction to your high school essay?

If you still need a USB-A / Micro-USB, then I would recommend purchasing one of their other chargers

    • +1

Yep I agree. It needs at least one usb a port.

I found that a lot of gan chargers have a design issue. As long as a cable inserted to a port, the power of a gan charger is already distributed which reduces the output from a high wattage port. It doesn't matter if it's charging a device. I hope someone could recommend a gan charger which doesn't have such issue.

Because the cables have a chip in it telling the charger and device how much power that cable is able to carry. The charger reads the chip and assumes that port is taking that much power.

The latest Anker GanPrime IQ4 ones might be smart enough to judge how much power is being actually drawn rather than just rely on reading the chip. I emphasis might, as I read somewhere it can actually dynamically allocate power, rather than disconnect everything and reconnect every time a port is plugged in.

Depends on the devices you want to charge.

I have a Zyron 156W deskpod. with my laptop connected to the 100W type C and phone/power bank connected to the USB A ports. The usage of USB A ports does not affect the type C charging.

It will use 100W on the type c for my laptop, and then 18W each for phone and powerbank.

Not sure it’s a design issue necessarily, just how they work. The adapters are labelled as chargers and not power supplies. If you’re charging a battery (or device with one) a power negotiation for a seconds really not going to impact anything. If you’re running a raspberry pi off one and treating it as a power supply then it’ll be an issue but.

That said, check the YouTube channel for AllThingsOnePlace”. Guy does a stack of reviews on chargers and checks for fluctuations when cables are added and removed. There’s a few that won’t cause power supply to cease as long as the second device is in certain ports or meets certain thresholds, but I honestly can’t remember what units those may be.

Recently grabbed a 140w Satachi that reviewed well (and was on sale a few weeks back), but I can’t remember if it handles power negotiation as you need or not.

      • Thanks. Satachi is expensive but has good quality.

        • Yeah. Wasnt cheap but got it at 20% off in a sale. With Black Friday coming in a few weeks, if you can afford to wait I’d put a few price alerts up for CamelCamelCamel and see what discounts get offered. Expect a lot of these are going to be discounted at that time.

          • @Smigit: I bought this to replace my Satechi actually. The Satechi would stop charging sometimes and i would have to unplug everything for 30 seconds to reset it.

            • @Broomstick: Interesting. Haven’t used my Satechi yet, but also have one of these on order from the last deal. Will compare them when this arrives.

  • GaN Charger

  • I have 2 of their chargers and preorder the 140w one. The only annoying thing is when you connect anything that needs constant power, i.e. I have a night light on my table that I often turn on first then connect my phone to the charger after, the light would then turn off
My guess is that when I connect my phone, the charger renegotiate with all the devices, thus the light turn off.
Beside that (which I don't think there is an alternative) they are great.

    • Do you leave the phone cable always plugged into the charger? So when the light goes out, it is when you plug the cable into the phone, not when you plug cable into charger?

      • My cables are always connected to the charger. So when the light goes out, it's when I connect the cable (which already connected to the charger) to my phone.

        • @HappyBargainer is this what you want from a charger? You can leave cable connected to the charger and it will only distribute power when you have a device connected to the other end.

          • @CodeXD: Yes, however I would like to see the scenario like charging a laptop with our ports are all plugged in.
