  • oh Cool

  • They don't fly over the Ukraine do they?

    • +2

And Israel / Palestine ? Hopefully by the time of the flight we will not have to mention more places on the way.

    • Iran and turkey

    • No. ICAO has issued a commercial ban on all routings over Ukraine.

      • I think Russia as well.

        • Only in some border areas. For the most part flights are still operating just as normally with Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, Air China, Turkish Airlines, China Southern Cargo ect are still operating on a daily basis to many ports outside of Russia.

Cathay Pacific still fly their aircraft over Russia on the way back from the US east coast to HKG.

    • It’s not “The Ukraine” just Ukraine, and no they don’t. Just look at a map of the world, why would they waste fuel on a detour over Ukraine?

  • Could be quite cold…

    • +1

I have updated the OP with the flight period: Travel in February - March and May - August/24.

      • ooo summer too!

  • FYI: read the terms and conditions of booking for your fare class. For these ultra discounted fares there are no changes or cancellations permitted.

Some may differ spending on the fare bucket

    • +1

Yes, they've got really stingy trying to recoup the Covid losses. Before you could get a UK return low to mid $1K with decent luggage. Now you're looking at $2K.

    • +9

Museums, castles/palaces, cathedrals, historical locations dating as far back as Roman times, world class shopping, theatres, pubs, sports, parks, one giant river, etc.

In Feb (winter) you can see shit weather

      • +1

Sure, but you're not that far from the Alps, for some awesome snow adventures

    • It isn’t they want to route you to London. They can’t post Tokyo every time. Aggregators would be happy to post multiple & daily to route traffic to their shitty ass sites if they can.

    • +1

The British Museum would take half a week to see properly tbh.

      • There's a good map on its website showing where the most popular items are

    • +1

It's a massively overrated city (and I lived there for 10 years). If you're going to make the effort to go to Europe in sh1t weather season, there are much better options nearby IMO.

      • It's summer also for these deals.
Once you're in London it's a very cheap hop to Italy, Greece, Spain etc.

        • That's one of the only advantages of the place - easy and relatively cheap to get to anywhere in Europe (anywhere in the World really).

    • +2

It's a good, familiar feeling gateway to Europe. Or base, if you're doing a long holiday or working there for a while.

For first time travellers it's interesting hearing all the accents you might have heard on TV (no-one can butcher English like the English). Tour the monopoly board places. Though I have to say the Poms do a rubbish tourist attraction compared to say the French. It is crowded though (but then any big tourist spot is - it's the curse of cheap modern travel. Used to be an overseas trip was a once in a lifetime thing. Now a lot of people do it every year.

    • A few of my highlights from my 3months in 2010:

Day trip to Liverpool, could walk from station to port, to everton stadium, to Liverpool stadium. Nice 6 hour walk and good fish and chips
Bus tour of stonehedge and bath, about $90
      Military museums (Chelsea and such)
      Art museums
      Going to a soccer/football game
Cheap Fake FKC in poorer areas like East London
      Mature only pubs (30+)

just of top of my head.

    • -1

Tell that to all the tourist that is jam packing London!! People everywhere with in the zone two area. 2KM of Leicester square and Piccadilly circus (Central Central London) is so packed you think it's Christmas sale, and that it's every single bloody day, not just weekends.

  • There are quite a few flights from different cities that fly from mid-March to August. With the Summers around the world expecting to be higher than the previous ones, maybe May/June would be the opportune time to go.

  • +1

Finally SIA coming to the Party with pre-covid prices, Qantas fading into obscurity

  • +1

London is a sh*thole is the word of my dad who just got back 2 days ago. He feels very unsafe even during the day light. Even worse at Paris which even during the day light he saw 2 incidents of bag snatch during the day.

He highly values Netherlands though, feeling completely opposite to the above

    • Was this at night time?

    • +5

I find it funny that any would downvote this.
For anyone even remotely aware of the current situation in Europe, it's apparent that many areas have deteriorated significantly in recent years, akin to the situation in many major US cities. Whether one likes it or not, this seems to be the reality.
In the past, we used to visit Europe every two years, and there was always a slight downward trend noticeable. However, due to the recent pandemic, we had e a five-year Break.
Our first trip after the break was shocking. Many places have degraded into shitholes and others have become almost no-go areas.
If it weren't for family commitments, we would undoubtedly opt for holidays in Australia and Southeast Asia.

Moreover, it's worth noting that prices for almost everything are skyrocketing in Europe.

    • I would not call it a sh*thole, expensive is very true, the same goes to Paris. I don't feel less safe in areas that I was in compared to Sydney.

You do have to be aware of pick pockets and look after your bags though, that is common sense.

I up vote you just because I hate people neg negative comments of travel destination. Don't know why they do that??

  • +5

Take it from someone who just return from the city last week and love London to death (I live there for over 10 years), this place is so expensive in 2023. The interesting part most people there is making the same if not less than Australia. Dont know how they live?

Typical meal for one person £14-20, yep same as aus just in pounds…
Specials in fast food chains like in Australia that OZBs are so use to? You are dreaming, basically unheard of. I actually show one of my friend who works in one of the chains the deals we have in Australia. She just shakes her head!! "Why are they doing this in? Its loosing money!!" and further shocked that they are usually app wide deals and not targeted promotion. "So customer will buy these money loosing deals and then comes to EOM head office will have a huge rebate to pay all the shops?" "No way this will happen in UK, the franchisee will tell you to F off and the CFO will tell you to F off"

Traveling is worse, cheapest Oyster cap is £8.10 that only give you access to as far a Zone two, Zone six cap is £14.90 (again same as Sydney but our cap gets you to Wollongong Newcastle and Blue Mountain). That is You are not taping on in peak hours. Longer distance train? Man you better plan and fix your time and dates. My day return ticket to Birmingham non peak hour cost me A$60, that is purchased 1 week in advance. To buy that on the spot is (again) sane price but in £…. and no its not really that far, about same from Sydney to Newcastle!!

an I have not come to accommodation yet!! 1 night in Novotel or Premier inn Soho will cost you A$300, and that is when yo are lucky to get a deal. Me and my wife had plans to stay in London for a week but cut that to just two nights in Novotel just to see her friend. We spend the time and money in Paris instead. Its still expensive but not as bad as London.

So take it from me, if you haven't been? Plan your budget and trips as plane ticket is just a small part in the total cost. If you've been? SERIOUSLY you money are better spend somewhere else!!

And I have to say this we have it good in Australia!! SERIOUSLY!!

    • +2

I have to say this we have it good in Australia!! SERIOUSLY!!

      100% AGREE.

Otherwise we will surrender to the same fate
and just say "ah…Good Ol' Days",
because we did not fight to preserve those days.

    • Condense London travel to as short as possible, spend the extra time in southern Italy, Spain, Eastern Europe, etc. Better food, better sights, better weather.

  • Anything for Japan in April? Or Greece / Europe June / July? (i know it's a pipe dream but have to go school hols)
