Costs $5 in fuel to drive to Supercheap auto now

    • -3

      You need an EV

      • -2

        would rather walk

      • +3

because evs are perpetual motion machines

        • +2

Almost free charging (fuel) if you have a solar system with a smart EV charger.

      • +7

Wouldn't be dropping off oil though

    • +1

Get on the pushbike. It's amazing what you can transport by bike when it's free.

  • +6

Metal scraper will pay more than that for a used car battery

    • How much so they typically pay? I think I have 3 old batteries.

      • From memory $8

      • Call up and ask… some weight them and pay per kg rate, and some buy per each

        • Metal recycling is not quite as lucrative any more. My local recycler only pays only 6¢-20¢ per kilo of metal, depending on type. It’s only worthwhile if you bring it in by the tonne.

      • +1

I get 65c a kg for the batteries.

      • +2

How much so they typically pay?

        Current rates are 45c-50c/kg.
I've noticed a steady decline in scrap lead acid battery prices over the past 5 years. I'm assuming that as battery tech changes the demand for lead is going down.

A big mofo battery out of a 4WD will get you about $8-$11.

The SCA offer isn't that bad.

        • both my cars are going on 11 and 12 years on their current battery. used be lucky if I got 3-4 back in the day

          • @Jackson: Is it a dry or wet battery?
Normally wet life cycle is longer but 12 years is very good
What are their brand that you’re using currently?

            • @thomalfa: One is the top of the range nrma battery for an 01 Camry, and the other is the OEM Nissan Leaf

    • Mines all dead, still worth it?

      • +2

        It's the lead they want

      • Salvage the lead only…

  • What is the qualifying transaction? Do you have to have bought oil or a battery there?

    • +1

It's wordy but they mean the relevant recycling transaction must be recorded on your Club account for the $5 to be credited within 5 business days of the promo end date.

  • +8

SCA credit expires quicker than milk

    • quicker than bread too?
      .

  • +1

Will they taste the difference between my used fried chicken oil and used car oil?

    • If you get served by an obese SCA worker then you may get caught out..

      • So, yes definitely

  • -6

old oil bottle filled with water or wet sand is an easy $5 if you are heading in anyway

  • +13

Thanks for offering but i'm not too far from the ocean

    • You forgot to add /S
Now you're going to get ratio'd

  • +4

Great incentive but in this day and age it probably cost $5 to drive to your nearest SCA, so unless you're going there anyways then….

    • +1

      So not a great incentive.

      • Pretty much

    • +3

Maybe you and ishdanish can carpool to make it worthwhile.

      • Yeah that's super logical considering one of us in Melbourne and the other is in NSW 🤣

    • +1

So you’ll drive to the dump instead?

  • +2

So if I have a battery and oil I can get 2 x$5 credits or only one?

    • It says that you can get one, $5 battery credit and one, $5 oil credit. The maximum is one of each type. It doesn't say that $5 is the maximum you can claim, therefore it is probable (with a high certainty) that you can claim both, to get $10 credit.

      • Are you speaking from experience or just your interpretation ?

        • My interpretation. A battery credit is separate from an oil credit, but each is limited to one. It does state that you are entitled to $5 credit for each type.

  • Again sorry how to claim multiple $5 ?
Go to different stores with different bottles (say half filled 5L oil bottles?) And each time tell them a different account number/email ???

  • Is new engine oil made from used and recycled engine oil? Or they use it to make plastic products

    • +1

It is delivered to gdsamp and he buries it in a hole that he dugout at his beach.

    • +1

Is new engine oil made from used and recycled engine oil?

When I worked at Goodyear 1982-1986 we sold all our waste oil (that included brake fluid, transmission oil, battery acid, cleaning solvent and coolant all in the same drum) to a recycler for 8c/litre.

We bought it back as "new" oil for 25c/litre after some type of cleaning/filtering process. It's how we could do an oil & filter change for $10 (we could get oil filters from QH for 50c).

I have no idea what the viscosity was or what oil specification it met but we put that crap into everything we serviced. I didn't find out until years after I left - not that I had any influence in these things.

  • Any super cheap auto or selected stores only?

    • battery is any store. Oil Recycling is not available in all stores

  • I have many 6L bottles full of used engine oil. What is limit of oil? I just want to remove them.

    • Doubt they will take all of that. Last time I brought in oil they asked how much i had before giving the ok to leave by the counter.

    • +8

You’re supposed to store bottles of used motor oil in the 40cm gap between the garage and fence, forever.

      • Have you been snooping around my house?!

    • They will take more than 1 bottle, you will only get one $5 credit though.

  • Wouldn't mind a fiver for an old motorbike battery I've got taking up room in garage

  • I got $30 off battery last week at Repco when I bought a new battery, brought in an oldie.

How about a lead acid 12v battery?

    Some questions I had;

    Q1: What is a qualifying transaction ?
Q2: Can I take 1x car battery and 1x oil bottle to my local SCA for recycling and get $10 credit as per this offer ?
Q3: Does the offer limit us to 1x car battery, or can we recycle more than one battery until the promotion runs out ?
Q4: Does the offer limit us to 1x engine oil bottle, or can we recycle more than one bottle until the promotion runs out ?

  • Perfect timing got about 5.5L that I need to drop off.

  • Anyone know if you get a receipt or anything to prove the transaction? I just dropped a battery at one of their NSW stores and they had no idea how to do it, they stuffed around for 10 minutes. I'm not confident it was done correctly

    • +1

When I dropped it off this morning they had no idea either but showed them the website. They were okay with doing it, just didn't realise the promo was on.

They took my membership details and after I got home I did get an electronic receipt for $0 for battery recycling via email. Maybe double check your email to see if u got this (mine came thru about an hour after drop off)

      • I might have to call them. I dropped it off around 10am and haven't received anything via email. Thanks for the reply

    • I got a email receipt within a few minutes. Bought something 10 minutes later but no credit on the account.

  • +3

Easier just to pour it into the neighbour's garden bed

  • Good deal for oil, bad deal for batteries

    • +1

A small agm battery works. Wouldn't get anywhere near $5 at the scrap yard.

  • +3

Took an old motorbike battery nto my local SCA store. They didn't know anything about it.
Opened the OzB page and showed them the page link from the original posting.
The womon offered me $5 cash, or $5 gift card.
"Do you want it in cash, or gift card?"

Me being too polite, I showed her where it says, gets credited to my club account at the end of the promotion period.

I should have taken the cash or gift card, but I've already sinned enough today

    • Tell me about your sins

  • Brought battery in for this today and store and store guy insisted it only applies if I purchased a battery at the same time. Had to get the manager to confirm no purchase was necessary. Hardly worth the inconvenience and annoyance to be honest.

    • I did this a while ago and 2 of the staff just said leave the battery at the door and scan a QR code.

All the QR code had was information about the offer. Apparently the staff have to key it in as a transaction against your club plus membership.

  • I have previously tried to take my old battery and oil to supercheap and was told they don’t accept it. Not sure if it’s just the one near me or it’s because the teen that served me had no idea.

Just received my $5.00 Credit… of course right after all the Black Friday sales end…

    • Just received mine too, annoyed it was after the sales as I wanted to grab some things.
