That is kick ass cheap, sadly have no need for one :/

  • Any reviews for this laptop? Can't seem to find any so far

  • +3

Can't find any reviews. Price seems pretty good.

Goodguys also selling the same one for $279. Considering they always negotiate about 5% or more (depending on the markup) if you payless/pay cash and if you still happen to have the 20% off gift cards, the price would come below $220. But not sure if the laptop is good enough, never used an AMD before.

get it for $220 off good guys, get a refund on the windows 7 installation, install freenas and you've got an awesome home server with a UPS!

  • +3

dont really need a review… all you need to look at is the CPU to work out what its gonna be like

  • can the RAM be upgraded?

    • +2

usually price match happens against advertised price (like catalogue) and not on discount coupons - but you may try your luck as the decision comes down to the manager.

      Edit: Original comment edited.

  • Review of CPU taken from Notebookcheck.com ……"The processor speed is somewhere between a single core 1.6 GHz Atom N455 and a dual core Atom N550 depending on the benchmark (see below). Therefore, the performance is still in netbook regions and only suited for low demanding tasks"

    • +1

If it can run chrome and play 720p videos then it already does as much as most people will need.

      • iv got a similar spec laptop and its not that good at playing 720…its also an AMD.

        • +1

It suits the requirements of 90% of the people out there. But even as a web browsing device, it lags! HTML5 + Firefox is actually pretty CPU intensive, so a CPU like this can actually make web browsing a little slower.

        • The c-50 will play 1080p videos flawlessly if you are using the right formats and software.

Eg 1080p mkv from the usual sources will play fine on VLC or mpc-hc. This is due to the GPU accelerated decoding.

        • yeah youtubing or flash video watching kills it on a N550 with 2GB -.-

  • -1

    Is shipping free?

    • +1

      Shipping is included

    • +4

please tell me "with Free Shipping at Bing Lee" wasn't included in the heading when you asked that question :P

      • Sigh looking at the revision history looks like its always been there…

  • Expect it only like a netbook type of machine with bigger screen. Enough for most documents work, Internet browsing, etc.

BTW, any free slot for 2 more GB of memory? Because it said 2GB on board.

    • it says in spec :
      On-board Memory: 2GB
      Memory Slot: N/A

sadly.. it's not possible (or very difficult) to upgrade the RAM

  • +6

So basically, this is a netbook with gigalan and USB 3.0, makes a great download machine.

    • +1

      and hdmi and blutooth too…

      • +1

Yeah hdmi and blutooth are good to have, but for my personal use (7x24 download and file transfer) gigalan and USB 3.0 are really helpful.

        • Checkout the Synology. I have a 212j ($215) and its unreal.

        • where did you get that for $215?

  • +2

    This is ridiculously tempting!

  • +1

man, change the word laptop to netbook, that is misleading! i had an Asus with the previous C50 and although it was good for hd videos everything else was laggy, and that was on a 10" screen, let alone a 14"!

    • i use a cheap class 6 SD card dedicated to readyboost, seems to smooth things up a bit.

    • the size of the screen is irrelevant, only the resolution matters at all and even that is irrelevant. The processing becomes harder as the program tries to render higher resolutions, so even a 4" iphone trying to render 1080p will struggle

  • IT comes with DVD player software- but does it have a DVD drive?

  • Goog Guys have it for $279

    http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/bunbury/Asus_F401U_Dual_Core_1…

its a good price if you wanted one … not a throwaway price

Buy if you really need it

  • +1

    Another giant netbook.

  • Why can't it be 10.1, to large, wish it was a NetBook.

  • +1

it's good for the price but the cpu is the same as intel atom dual cores like 570
So for the purple of docs, surf and music… it's awesome… $249

  • My FireFox or Chrome can use up to 500MB of RAM, with only about 6 tabs open… the first thing I'd be doing would be throwing more RAM into this.

This is really only good for basic word processing and web browsing - if you're thinking otherwise, don't. I doubt even throwing an SSD into this would make it terribly better (considering that is one damned awful CPU). But still, good bargain for the price.

  • Edit: didn't read properly

Can't find any mention of weight in product description, any specs here?

    • It weighs roughly the same as a small conventional laptop!

      • Can't find any specs anywhere, but if it's similar to the X401U then I'll just assume "1.76 kg (with 6 cell battery).

        Looks like a good package.

  • Does anyone have an idea of what the shipping times will be?

    • +1

We usually ship next business day. We have stock ready to go so we hope to get it to you by next week. If you order and pick up instore then same day.

      • +1

Rep, It now says out of stock when trying to add to cart, but on the product page still states in stock?

Is there a specific quantity allocated that works with the code.

Also is there any chance more stock will be added?

  • Finally, been waiting for a cheap netbook with gigabit LAN. Will make a great downloading machine for torrents and usenet.

  • How does it work to upgrade to Windows 8 for the $15 deal? Would this be eligible?

    • I would say so, since any Win7 ver. above starter is eligible.

  • Says out of stock now. Anyone snag this?

    • I did, was on for a good few hours. Going to sell it for $270-$300 hopefully.

      • Great. The one day I don't check ozbargain and I miss out on what I was after :(

        • Back in stock aimon. Todays orders will ship early next week

  • Out of Stock

    • says in-stock on my screen at 9:10pm

      • Try adding to cart. Says out of stock

        • Right.

        • We are getting some more units in from our stores. Todays orders wont ship till Monday. We are back in stock now

        • Will they be shipped from Sydney warehouse?

        • Correct. From our centralized warehouse

  • +2

Bought it a few weeks ago from Online Computers for $288. T_T

This laptop is indeed very slow due to the crappy CPU but if you add an extra 4GB of RAM, like what I did, it may just be fast enough to do what you want.

Battery life is pretty good, lasts 4-5 hrs, but then again all I do is browsing the net and playing Youtube.

However, for $250 you really can't go wrong, yes just think of it as an extra large netbook lol.

    • very useful information, I was thinking it it was possible to add RAM.

    • Could you please provide the model no. of the RAM that you bought? I asked the guy in Bing Lee yesterday and he said this laptop cannot be added extra RAM. Can you tell us how many ram slots it has? Thanks!!

      • I ordered this yesterday. Don't know the ram no, but my intention is to replace the existing ram with a larger stick (8 gig for < $50 these days). Hopefully that's possible.

        • From what I've seen googling the similar model X401U, it doesn't look like it has a separate ram compartment cover meaning the whole bottom of the case may have to be removed to access the slots….can someone who has this unit (like citybargainhunter) please confirm?

    • Sorry, my bad, mine is actually a different model.

  • +1

more stock added. Just ordered one myself.

  • We ran out of stock in the warehouse last night but have more coming in early next week so today's orders will ship early next week

    Couple of important points:

    1. Went down to guildford Bing lee, they were happy to give me the unit for $249 right there, so looks like if you're in a hurry you can certainly do that. Was no trouble.

    2. RAM IS NOT UPGRADEABLE! It is soldered on to the board:

      https://dl.dropbox.com/u/1567037/IMG_20121004_143145.jpg

Let my suffering (yes you have to pull out the entire motherboard to discover this) guide you.

    1. HD IS upgradeable. Here's an excellent youtube guide:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC3cdk1Rxbo

However DO NOT go past the tutorial where he upgrades his ram (as I did) because… well see point 2 above. He has a slightly different model although the case is identical.

    Hope this helps

    • Thanks theological, really appreciate you going through all the trouble to provide input to this. :-)

Looks like a handful just to upgrade the hdd & pity about no ram slot. Guess it stuck on 2GB.

  • Just a heads up that there is still 4 more of these in the Belconnen, ACT store and the awesome store managers gave one to me for $230!

  • Just bought it.. and I'm actually using it to make this post..

ITS AN ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. I wasn't trying anything fancy. Just trying to connect to the internet. And that took me 1 hour to get to this point (installing chrome cos IExplorer sucks). And I had to force 1 restart because the standard restart is not shutting down the computer for almost 10 minutes.. I had to restart because I removed all the startup softwares from booting up and slowing down the Windows..

I thought its good enough for simple download and browsing.. but damn, I'm regretting spending my money on this………………

    • you need to upgrade it to 4GB ram for smoother operation. Only costs 10 bucks on ebay these days.

      • +1

didn't someone confirm the ram isn't upgradeable because it's soldered onto the mobo?

anyways link to $10 4gb ram on ebay please

        • refer to citybargainhunter 's comment or open the memory module compartment and check if there is any additional ram slot for upgrade. I bought it from this guy. It's a generic ram but good quality.
          http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/psomibrett/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&…

          cheers

        • refer to theological's comment and pics

i fail to see a single 4gb dimm going for $10.. yes there are 2x2GB ones that go for even less than $10.. but thanks anyway

        • no worries, I was refering to 2gb RAM as an extra 4GB ram maybe over kill instead of an extra 2GB.
