Seagate 3TB Expansion External Drive USB 3.0 $159 from Officeworks

630

I was at Officeworks tonight and was going to see if they will price match the BigW HP 3TB drive at $169 but they didn't have that drive, instead they had the Seagate 3TB USB 3.0 for $159 which is $10 less!

I'm not sure which one is better quality, but the Seagate drive does also have a 3 Year warranty which seems pretty good.

    Before anyone asks:

Easy to take out the internal HDD, 99% of people will break certain plastic bits while doing so, Officeworks haven't checked this on returns so far.

While the HDD is in the case it has poor ventilation and will easily get past 60C under load.

These are very fast USB 3 drives.

You can get 3tb internal 3.5" hard drives cheaper, starting @ $149. These days its probably not worth it buying an external and voiding the warranty by removing the hard drive to use as an internal.

Agreed, I was browsing external and internal HDD prices last night and noticed some 3TB internal drives had dropped down to around the $150 mark making these externals somewhat pointless if your plan is to remove the drive.

If you're actually looking for an external 3TB drive, don't get one of these unless you plan to only power it up once in a while and use it for very short periods of time. As already mentioned, they are very poorly ventilated and get very hot. From what I've read the drive generally survives this but the internal SATA to USB controller craps out.

This is the old design / model, there is a newer one, more square looking. I don't know if they've solved the ventilation issues with the new case, you'd hope so having had so many of the old ones bake themselves to death but reading some of the 1 star reviews on Amazon, there are still people experiencing similar issues with the new model too.

        • I have heard about the overheating problem - I've had my 2tb Seagate for about 4-5 months and use it fairly regularly (for films on the Xbox) and haven't had any issues so far though.

I was considering this drive compared to the Seagate 3TB FreeAgent GoFlex Desk External Hard Drive USB3.0, which is $179. I bought that one last week, as it seemed better built and ventilated.

I have copied around 2TB of data onto it, and I can say that I've experienced no problems whatsoever.
The software is completely optional, but with the software you can choose when it goes to sleep, and turn the external lights on or off. Very quiet and starts up when the USB cable is plugged in (turns off when you unplug the USB. I am however using USB 2.0 for the moment.

    • Yeah I've been looking at this drive, only $20 more at office works and looks like a safer long term bet with the ventilation issues on the deal one above.

I noticed some of these drives got a bad review on Amazon. I probably worth a check.

I have the 2TB version of this for about a year (USB 2.0 though) and no issues yet.

I've got the 2TB version of this as well. Works fine for backing up the computer, but when I tried copying a lot of data (backing up family movies, moving around 400 MB or so) explorer on Windows 7 tends to freeze up.

No problems copying larger amounts of data to Verbatim, HP or a WD external drive.

This is why I love ozbargain! Not only do we share good deals, we also get advice and opinions from others :)

  • Good price. Anyone find a deal on the Western Digital USB drives please post it.

    • JB have it on special right now. ~$188. I assume you mean the external 3TB HDD, since that is what this thread is about.

  • $10 cheaper than I payed a month ago at Dick Smith.

    • Maybe price match at dick smith for 5% off $159.

  • Thanks, bought it with free delivery too.

  • Got this for $119 from OW back on June 2012 using pricematch from sale of closing DickSmith!

  • not a fan of WD anymore - prefer the Seagate Barracuda family… Very tolerant fast drives.

  • i was thinking i needed more space last night and was hoping for a good deal :) TY, similar pricing to the ones i bought from amazon

  • Can someone explain why people like removing the hdd from an external drive and use it as an internal hdd, I've always wondered. Is the external drive cheaper when compared to the internal hdd of the same exact model within?

    • They used to be around $50 cheaper.

      Not the case anymore.

  • Price matched at Dick Smith. Thanks.

Regarding ventilation, it has vents on the bottom, you could use it upside down or raised.

    • Sounds like terrible design to me!

  • Doesn't the HP have a WD drive in it? I would much prefer a WD over Seagate….

  • I bought the 2TB version at Officeworks about six months ago for $147 from memory. The USB chip connector is extremely flimsy and failed to work after using it about ten times rendering the HD useless. Very frustrating as it was at 95% capacity.

  • How annoying, just got the 1.5 TB one from Dick Smith last week for 99. This is way better

  • I just bought a 3TB Seagate for $149 with free postage from JB HiFi. Thanks all for comments about overheating will pay attention to that.
