Still kicking myself for not getting one when HP were selling them direct for $199 + free shipping :( Anyone know if there's a newer model coming out any time soon?

    • same..

      • You sure the $199 wasn't the N36L?

edit: looks like you guys were right, they were around $200

They have been selling them at <£100 ($158) after cashback in the UK recently. That deal has been going on for years, but the spate of <£100 prices does suggest that a box based on newer low power processors might be on the cards (there are lots of options for HP to go with).

  • I thought the latest reports said that it was capable of housing 4tb hdd's and extras with modding?

    • Those are specs given by HP but I am even using 16GB memory.

  • My enthusiasm for these has been dampened a bit by the new AMD apu's. It's really time for a new model I think

  • Can anyone here confirm that these N40Ls can handle 3 or 4TB drives? I found this on Overclockers: http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showpost.php?s=1a004fb39ab… but I need to dig further for more proof before I take the plunge.

    • Here said someone used 4TB drive on the N40L and its working fine. hope this help. http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/3980-n40l-…

The boot drive can't be bigger than 2TB, but the rest can.

You can sort it out so that you can use a small SSD for your boot disk, and have up to 6 4TB disks if you don't mind a little DIY.

    • Have a N40L with a 3x3TB drives (2xWD red, 1xWD green). Using a 120gb laptop Hdd for boot.

I have both the N36L and the N40L. My N40L is only running 4 x 2TB + 1 x 1TB in the ODD bay in a chasis that allows for a slim ODD also. My N36L has 4 x 3TB and 1 x 250 GB in the ODD bay. In both cases I used the bios mods recommended in the overclockers forum.

    • Mine has been running 4x3TB drives for 6 months with no problems. I'm also using a 120GB laptop drive to boot Solaris11.

Just a word of caution, This deal doesn't include the 250GB HDD.

    • Just a word of caution, This deal doesn't include the 250GB HDD.

      Well spotted!

FWIW, you can still get this model (N40L) at ShoppingExpress for $265 + shipping which includes the 250Gb HDD. Their price is until 8th Oct.

      • I just checked the shopping express site and the model with 250GB HDD is showing as on sale at $249 until October 7.

    • Indeed well spotted.
      No deal then.

  • I used mine as a htpc. According to my belkin metre thingy it uses about $9 a month in electricity. On 24/7. Great little box!

    • If you turned it off after you finished using it, you would probably save about $100 a year from your electricity bill. In the first year, that saves enough money to pay for an SSD to make your boot-up time negligible. Thereafter, you save $100 per year - currently enough to buy a new 2TB SATA HDD each year.

At least have your "htpc" go into hibernate when you aren't using it, don't waste power. Hibernate won't save as much power as turning it off at the wall, but it's an improvement.

LOL. Mine both run 24/7 as a torrent box and HTPC and NAS. No can turn off.

        • +1

People still torrent? Lol usenet all the way, no issues with seeders or lack of peers, just full speed straight away.

        • not everything available on usenet! ;-)

        • I must be old school. Although let's be honest… nothing is more old school than usenet no matter how well it works :D

        • Thats right david, but 99.9% of what most people DL is available on there, combined with sickbeard means everything is automated, tv show episodes etc.

What you cannot get on usenet, is normally available on a private direct download tracker anyways.

        • Only rule about usenet, don't talk about it!

      • The N36L does not appear to support sleep mode, is this the same?
No matter though as it is made as a server. Little point getting a low-power box if it is only on while you are watching.
Mine stays on to record TV programs (mythtv) and uses a lot less than $9/month.

        • last time I checked my N40L doesn't support sleep mode, only hibernate.

      • I should have clarified but mine does more than just HTPC and is used through out the day. So turning it off and on all the time isn't an option.

      • "If you turned it off after you finished using it, you would probably save about $100 a year from your electricity bill. In the first year."

        Light load, 3HDD = 42W
        42Wx 24H = 1.008KwH
        1.008KwH x 0.23c = 0.232c
        0.232c x 365 = $84.68/year to keep running.
