Items from Japan (Manga/Anime/TCG/etc) + Fees, Free Shipping with No Minimum Spend @ Suruga-Ya.com

1050

with the A$1 ~ 97 Yen, good time to buy from Japan, especially if you know what you want. No airfares required.

They have the usual - anime/manga franchises (Pokemon, One Piece, Ghibli), plus stationery, Nintendo etc.

I don't know about the prices of individual items, but you save with free shipping from Japan. This is my first dealing with them, so no idea about the shipping times.

I ordered some hard to find Japanese One Piece Card Game items. Ended up much cheaper than getting it locally. Don't think it would be if they charged shipping though.

    Anyone used this site before?

    • +4

Yup, I used it during a previous free shipping promotion this year! Ordered a pre-owned CD, manga and a keychain and they were all delivered in perfect condition.

    • Bought some magic the gathering reserved list cards from them ages ago 👌

  • some fairly well priced gunpla

    • All the ones I checked shows as "Used" :(

      • i missed that part :(

      • +2

Used often means the boxes are opened but all parts are still sealed in bags. Japanese people are very careful with their goods..Used items in Japan are often pristine.

    Pyra and Mythra amiibo ~$49

  • Black lotus for $32,034.38.

  • Some of the classic PlayStation games are going for dirt cheap

  • Are all items brand new?

    • +6

Nope. They stock a mix of used and new items, where it's best to check the description of each item before purchasing.

      • Do you know how to tell? Seems like everything has a "Used" price and a "Listed" price. I assumed listings were all used, but this applies even to items that were released as recently as last month. Could it be a reference to what items are estimated to be worth on a used market? Or is everything I've seen simply used?

  • Anyone used this site before? …

    • I haven't used their site, but they were one of my favourite series of stores across Japan, so I'd say that the site is perfectly fine

    • +1

Surugaya is legit. They're all over Japan.

  • +1

The fact I would be covered by PayPal in case of any issues.. it’s worth the risk

Having said that… I have no idea what to order

There is soooo much stuff lol

    • Y'know, I thought it'd be easier to find stuff online than in-store. But after trying to use their semi-jank website, I think it's better to head in-store (after landing in Japan, of course).

  • Why can't I afford this ? :(((

    • Because your bank account has less than AUD$525.36. If you had AUD$525.36 or more, then you would have sufficient funds to exchange for goods and services.

    Price seems ok?
Does anyone know if the anime blu-ray have English subtitle?

    • I'd doubt it considering almost all the DVDs / Blurays there are Japanese versions.
Otherwise check online if a specific disc will have eng subs, just don't get your hopes up

      • Ok. I will stick to JB to be safe

  • Thank you for posting. Cheaper than CDJapan for a certain Christmas gift item.

  • Thanks op.
Got 5x one piece starter decks.

  • Looks a bit like a marketplace for sellers of new and second hand stuff. Very eclectic mix of stuff but great place to rummage around for out of print, etc. and free shipping means this is a cheap and easy way to get things that aren't super-rare. Took a punt on a few things and see how it goes.

Suruga-ya is a very well-known chain-store in Japan which sells mostly 2nd hand electronics/collectibles/hobby items with physical stores all over Japan (similar to Book-off). Big chain stores like these normally have very good QC when they buy from sellers so there shouldn't be any issues there. That being said, the last time I bought from them was over 10 years ago and I saved over 80% of RRP buying a near-new blu-ray set compared to a brand new one.

Just make sure to check the title/description before buying is my only advice, and Listed Price = RRP.

i made a purchase. I had to pay 500jpy commission (paid via paypal). Thank you!

    • 500jpy commission

      Don't you mean surcharge?

      • +1

It says commission on the order.

        • +1

I suspect it's probably commission to Surugaya.

    • also paid via paypal and paid 500 jpy commission. can't seem to find anything about this on their website and i'm not sure what the conditions are for it. ah well, still cheaper than paying shipping.

edit: i had a check and it's 手数料, so more like "handling fee"

  • Yeah I vaguely saw some message at checkout but I don't recall the cart including a line item for GST. It's it likely to get held up by customs/need to pay import duty?

    • Did you spend more than $1k?

      • +1

Didn't they change the law to require overseas businesses to collect GST on "low value goods" and to provide evidence of collection along with the delivery? It doesn't look like Suruga collects GST.

Best case scenario, enjoy the tax free status while it lasts coz the ATO will go after Suruga.

Worst case scenario items from Suruga will be held by customs and assessed for import duties.

        • Yeah, you are right, the law was changed in 2018. Suruga must collect GST on low walue goods and send it to ATO. So it should be the best case scenario that you described but who knows.

Free shipping is pretty insane. The prices on the site don't seem differ all that much from what's on their JP site so it's a really good deal if anyone's been thinking of getting something for a while but never committed. For me, I got a very old PS2 game that was only available at certain stores which I never had a chance to visit when I was in Japan at the time. Now I don't have to go in store and hope it's still there.

To give those a rundown, Suruga-ya is one of the largest reseller businesses for anime/game merch. Assume anything you buy is 'used', despite many items having not been opened before. There's no way to know the exact condition of the item and whether its opened or not previously, though larger damages or missing parts will likely be noted on the item name. I know there's a store in Singapore though from the looks of it anything bought here should come out of their Japan stores. Happy to be corrected

    • I've been waiting for another free shipping promotion, but most of the stuff I've had wishlisted there is from double up to literally ten times the price it is on the Japanese site now. Even with free shipping it's still more expensive than getting them elsewhere, however, I still managed to find some other hidden gems.

  • how long does shipping take to sydney?

    • EMS is around 1 to 2 weeks these days

      • I ordered on Friday, and received on the Friday afterwards. Pretty quick from Japan!

  • Thanks OP!!

I remember spending hours browsing through their stores in Akiba, didn’t know they’re online too. Free EMS shipping is so generous.

  • Thanks op!!! I was able to buy like 10 cds for roughly 5-10 each of one of my favorite Japanese artists who weren't on eBay anywhere, thank uuuu

  • This is great, thanks OP!

Not only for the free shipping but for making me aware I can order from Suruga-Ya online. I loved browsing their shops in person when I travelled in Japan.

Without free shipping , do we know how much they charge roughly ?

  • I did a few orders yesterday.

It is a 500 yen flat fee per order.

Note that certain items cannot be shipped due to weight / size (i tried buying a pretty heavy gaming controller and got denied)

    • Was it the Steel Battalion Xbox controller? I wish I had the suitcase space to bring it home.

      • arcade perfect beatmania controller. 3 x the size of the standard playstation 2 one.

  • Tried to make some purchases today but still charged me 45 bucks for shipping, has the deal finished?

    • +1

Yeah IIRC the banner said ending at 20:00 yesterday (presumably Japan time). Missed it by that much

      • Thanks! I will wait for next year then :)

        • +2

Just checked the Surugaya website and saw that the free shipping promotion is running again until the 27th in case you still wanted to buy anything

          • +1

@Clara capybara: Found some figures that I wanted and it didn't charge me for a cent for shipping. Thanks a lot!

  • A warning for in the future - if you're a first time buyer and you use pay by credit card, if your order is deemed too large (price wise), there is a risk it will be cancelled due to a lack of past transaction history.
