Finally pulled the trigger, $330 pay by 4 till 30-Dec-2023 is hard to resist for this state of the art panel.

    Thank you OP!

  • I've read comments of people using a tv as a monitor, does this actually work or does it create eye strain due to low pixel density for text?

    • +3

Nope works just fine but again YMMV

I have been running the LG C series OLED TVs as monitors for a few years now, ever since the 48CX then the 48 C1, 42 C2, and now this is tempting me to just change to a 42 C3 even though the changes are very minor.

      • +1

The change from 42c2 to c3 is so minor and LG drops the price new oled model like crazy. I remember when c2 is on clearance they are around $950. I have 2 42c2 as computer monitor and 1 65cs as regular TV. Wouldn't spend any money unless c3 is on clearance.

      • +2

Waste of money sounds like your addicted more on the experience of buying the latest product. c1 c2 c3 all minor upgrades , if you change your c2 for a new c3 get ready to buy a C4 12 months from now because you are that type of person .

I love tech and I’m in the tech industry, and I’m blessed enough to change my hardware frequently and will continue to do so. I sell my old stuff at a reasonable price so others can afford them too so I don’t see the issue here.

          • @thesmartone1125: I never said it was an issue. That’s up for debate depending who you ask. You came here you posted you were looking for people opinions , you got it. That’s all.

You need a new hobby :)

4K on a 42" works out to be about the same pixel per inch as a 27" 1440p monitor. You'll be fine.

      • Would 4k on 77inch work depending on distance from tv? Usually length of tv of a 4K tv is the distance for best viewing experience.

        • Yes, if you're seated further away it'll work too. The 4K on a 42" example I provided above was based on an average depth of most desks.
There's an 85" FHD 1080p LCD TV in my company's main boardroom and texts look sharp if I am seated away from it (about 5-6m away).

    • Depends how particular you are about font rendering. Read this:

Any deals on the 48” or does that sibling not get much love?

    • Feel like it doesn't… I'm waiting for the 48" to go down, but it seems to be the size that never really change much in price. One can only hope!

    • +1

It’s kind of an awkward size I reckon. Too big to use as a monitor on a normal sized desk and too small a tv for most.

      • +3

        Perfect home office TV

      • +2

My main (only) TV is 48inches. I now feel deprived …

      • Perfect to discount extra stock then!

      • I have the 48" Ultragear about 30" away from me on my desk and it's perfect. No eye strain at all.

    • +1

Apparently Bing Lee cleared a while bunch of 48" Sony a80k at around the same price of this LG deal. It still shows up on Google searches as out of stock. Would have been the dream purchase!

  • +2

$1275 after the 6% off gift cards, it's getting harder to not impulse purchase!

  • Will it get cheaper next Friday?

    • Million dollar question

  • Which one is better for HDR. LG or QD OLED by Samsung?

    • +1

QD OLED although it comes with several negatives that make the LG better overall (and it's HDR presentation is still good).

    • +1

From what I read, LG's WOLED appears to have a decent track record when it comes to burn-in. QD-OLED is still early days and just getting into 2nd gen. Samsung allegedly reduced the brightness of its 2nd gen QD-OLED to compensate.

I have the OLED G9 and my goodness, colours really pop. Text rendering was horrible out of the box but after using Better ClearType, texts are crisp and sharp now. Doesn't matter if its white text over black background or vice versa. It is completely tolerable to me. 2nd gen QD-OLED has kinda solved the problem now.

      • I do have a new Macbook Pro with mini LED.
Haven't really watched any HDR movies on my laptop until recently.
I just realized what I was missing with my TV.
The Macbook is far better in every way. HDR really pops.
Based on my research no OLED can match brightness and no Mini LED can have the same level of contrast.
Hard to find something that offers a great balance between the 2 like the MacBook does but on a much bigger screen.

  • +7

This is literally cheaper than actual OLED monitors at this point.

Why the (profanity) is a 32" 1440p OLED monitor more than a 42" 4k TV

    • that is a great question

    • "Small" OLED TVs have always been far cheaper than OLED monitors (and probably will always be). Economy of scale, and also gaming monitors tend to attract a premium price point. I think it's absurd that gamers are willing to pay $1000-$1500 for a 1440p OLED gaming monitor, but it is what it is.

      • -2

1440p is still a good resolution for gaming. There is a huge drop in performance between 1440p and 4K, and for very little difference in perceived quality. The jump from 1080p to 1440p is huge and very noticeable. I’ve been told the jump to 4k is minor in comparison.
A 4090 gives a 60Hz experience in a lot of games at 4k which is decent, but it’s not high refresh rate. And how many people have a 4090?

    • The main reasons I am aware of:

      1. Economy of scale. TV sales dwarf enthusiast-class monitor sales.
      2. Advertising/partnerships. Companies pay money for things like the Netflix/Prime Video button, having their apps pre-installed, in-menu ads, etc. which is baked into the smart TV business model.
      3. Because people are willing to pay that much for monitors and they're not in a rush to cut the prices until sales drop low enough or a competitor cuts prices.
    • It's much harder to make OLED in smaller form factors. That's why phone screens costs so much to replace.
There's is a reason why we never had them earlier.

  • +1

Mine states $38.50 for delivery, anyone else getting that?

  • For using as computer monitor, I assume the $1400 49" Odyssey QD-OLED G9 240HZ Curved Monitor is better? See https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/812975

    • +3

Strictly as a computer monitor, definitely. I prefer the C3 as it can be used for consoles and movies.

      • +1

Agreed with the compatibility, but even for PC use I still prefer the c2 over an ultrawide.

I had an ultrawide prior to my 42inch c2, I was surprised at the number of PC games that have black bars on the sides for cutscenes and there were a handful that had black bars all around instead of stretch to fit. Some games could be fixed with mods (at least for cutscenes), but some games would blow out the FOV for gameplay with mods. It was much easier to just go back to a standard 16:9 resolution.

Although an ultrawide is good for productivity. I run a lot of excel spreadsheets, side by side is nice on a 4k monitor, but better on an ultra wide.

OLED panels also last quite well. Still got a 55B6 in my lounge room from 2016 with over 10,000 hours on it and no burn in.

    • +1

Depends on person, gaming wise i would say 42 are better most of time.

Work wise if you are use to having multiple screen then 49 is better.

  • You could in theory get the 42" C3 for $1215 with Cole's TCN gift cards at JB on Wednesday. Although, you will have to purchase 14x$100 gift cards (or whatever number of the $50) and then ask the JB employee to do 14+ eftpos transactions. Might be more effort than it's worth…

    • also assuming you CAN get 12-15 gift card against all other shopper.

      • Yeah, it's a bit of a gamble. You can fall back on 3% gift cards and can be picked up locally.

        • +2

6% gift card can be used on this deal too. Ebay gift card. so price wise this still wins.

    • Or you could just convert them all to JB gift cards and enter the codes online for pickup. Less hassle and won’t piss off the JB employee

      • Nice, didn't know you could do that. Thanks for the tip.

    • His complaint of the matte finish doesn't apply to this TV.
