  • UPTO 3 year non replaceable battery.

    • It’s like a subcription model for $20-$40 for 3 year

I’ve managed to pop open the older generation “non replaceable battery” and change the battery and re superglue it shut.

  • +3

The big downside of the new Tile is the non-replaceable battery. With fierce competition from Apple and Samsung, why would they choose this pathway?

    • +2

It really makes the offering unappealing doesn't it. More akin to something Apple would do, yet they ironically have replaceable batteries in Airtags, as does Samsung in the SmartTag2. Google is rumoured to enter the market soon too…

    • You can still get the pro version as a gray import via ebay. The coin battery compartment can't be locked so can't officially be sold here. This is due to the swallowing danger for children. Hopefully Ring redesigns them soon.

      • The Airtag's battery is pretty easy to twist open and can be legally sold here, don't see why it is difficult to create one with a replaceable battery that can be sold in Australia

Officeworks for $17 and free shipping if you’ve one pass :)
Pretty good KK or bad Santa stocking filler

Damn, got JB beat. I didn't realise they sold them, only down side is they only appear to do the black or white versions

Had a tile, then got a Samsung SmartTag.
Put both in the same bag and flew into Singapore.

When I arrived at the baggage carousel, the Tile still showed it was in Australia. SmartTag already updated to say it was on the tarmac in Singapore, spotted by another Samsung user.

When did the tile finally catch up?
When the bag was in front of me.

Seeing as the Tile network requires a network base of users having the Tile app - it is not as widespread whereas airtag/smartthings rely on iOS and Samsung's Android OS.

    • +1

I didn't know the Samsung ones worked that way. Good news for Android users like myself.

My Tile saved me losing my keys at the airport but took about 30 minutes before it pinged me. Was going to retire them but I still have the ones where I can replace the battery. 🤷‍♂️

I stopped buying when they went away from replaceable batteries and started pushing subscriptions.

They will be gone in a couple of years, once google launch they are toast.

  • Damn. I didn't realise they stopped the replaceable battery version. Glad I picked up the starter pack last year.

I'm a Tile loyalist as they saved my arse a few times when it was picked up by strangers or kicked in a obscure place in a family restaurant but this REALLY sucks.
