Any idiot can run, but it takes a special kind of idiot to run a Marathon.

Great deal. $10 to change to a different distance later, so you could get a half marathon for $52.20 total. Untested.

    • +2

Nice, going to try that and swap to the 21.1km distance later.

A little wild though that prices are hedging towards $200.

    • +6

Looks like it is $10 plus any difference in cost according to T+Cs:
"Any participant who changes into another race of greater value will be required to pay the difference between the entry fee originally paid and the current cost of participating in the alternative race plus a $10.00 admin fee."

    • +9

I can confirm that you are required to pay the difference between the original entry fee and the current cost of the half marathon, along with an additional $10 admin fee.

I did it this year and paid $1xx to change from FM to HM.

      • Wow thanks for the clarification

    • +1

Anyone can run, it's the most basic form of sport that focuses mostly on training. I get bored easily, I prefer sports that require more skills to hone.

      • +3

Running is so accessible,it's great! I run with some seriously impressive people of all ages, a 70+ year old (Wayne Thompson who just completed his 45th consecutive Melbourne Marathon in 3hours 39 minutes) all the way down to a ten year old girl who has possibly just beaten the 5km world record for her age group at 17 minutes and 8 seconds.
It's for all people and all skills :)

        • -4

Running is obviously very accessible, but some people prefer sports with more specific skills to practice to keep them interested. I met a 70+ year old amputee skiing down the Matterhorn on one leg.

          • @ass3ts: Then those people should probably find a different deal

            • @Jayblesz: While I agree, I don't see why they should be silenced (unless they're being rude).

    • +2

They are scrapping the other distances, they want to be just the marathon. (like a major marathon)
Unsure if scrapping it in 2024 or if they get the Major status

    • +1

Most marathon runners now are walking and jogging it's a great strategy.

Honestly go slow and you should be fine.

    • Agree! Signed up last year due to the cheap cost. Did the race, finished and will never do it again!!!!

    • Any idiot can run, but it takes a special kind of idiot to pay to run.

      • Pay to win or pay to run. Either way you lose.

  • +3

    Wow thanks.

Registered. Was planning to register next year to run again.

    • -2

Would you say paying $170 to go to a concert is hilarious?

    • +13

you're paying for an event lol how do people not understand this, if you dont want to pay there's nothing stopping you from running yourself

    • +19

It costs a lot to organise a marathon!

They need to pay for things like: shutting down roads for a lot of the course, medals, water stations, police, medical, advertising, shirts, and a billion other things

      • +1

I hear the insurance is costly?

    • +3

Let me guess you can't run a 5km

    • +1

      Do you run?

      • +20

No, he jumps between trees. He's a munki.

    • +4

"Never understood that road closures, marshalls, first aiders, etc cost money"

    • +5

Pretty weird decision to click on this page.

    • +1

      Classic bargainer.

This other thing is cheaper. Nothing else goes into my decision making.

    • +1

For the experience. For the achievement. Similar to why some people pay and train to climb Mt. Everest.

      • -3

For the experience. For the achievement.

You can still run the course without registering.

        • +7

Run the course and stop every 50 metres for 2-4 mins waiting for the pedestrian signal to turn green? Breathe in the fresh puff of diesel smoke from the bus passing by? I don't think so mate.

          • -6

            @nomadspartan:

Run the course and stop every 50 metres for 2-4 mins waiting for the pedestrian signal to turn green

Why? is that what those registering a doing?

          • @nomadspartan: If concerned about the smoke pollution, then why run a marathon into the CBD?

    • +1

I used to think like that too, and even did my first half-marathon on my own.

However, after having participated in a few events now, I can say it's a very different feeling. And we go faster, somehow.

Maybe try a parkrun someday and you'll get a small taste for free ;)

  • +6

Signed up! $1 per/km - baragin! Thanks for sharing

    • Can I just sign up for $1 to run only 1km?

      • +9

If i run backwards, will you pay me instead?

        • +1

Yes. But only available for full marathon.

  • +10

Good deal! Definitely rubs the wrong way for those of us that already paid for Super Early Bird at $130…

    • +1

Yep I agree, signed up right after 2023 event, had a feeling this would happen too!

    • +2

I missed the deal last year so I held off hoping they would have a deal again.
My backup plan was to do what I did this year and register for the 10km event then hope for the free upgrade to the full marathon.

If they give a refund for cancelling you could do that then register again using this deal.

    • If you join the Sydney striders they get discounted tickets but it cost to join them (though well worth the money)

  • +13

    Wow! Thanks OP. Registered.

I was disappointed I missed out on super early bird. Glad i procrastinated!

Second marathon, here I come! Hoping for sub 4 hr

    • +4

Same. But for $40 no way I will procrastinate again. Same goal with you, to run sub 4 this time. My 2nd marathon.

    • +2

It'll be my 3rd and hoping sub 4 as well! Good luck everyone in training

  • +16

it says the code is limited.

please only sign up if you're seriously considering it.
we don't want to take this opportunity away from willing runners in the community.

the marathon takes serious commitment to achieve.

    • +2

20,001 if you count the poster of what is a very old joke.

      • It wasn't funny the first time either

        • That's not the first time either. Its from Seinfeld show.

    • +3

      Can you organise one please?

      • -7

You sound like you evade tax.

        • Again, can you organise one?

          • -1

@Fredfloresjr: They are talking about 'running' a marathon, not 'organising' one.

    • +23

It has been answered quite a few times on this post already. Yes you can run the same route in your own pace any time you want "for free". However Sydney Marathon is an organised event. There are road closures, aid stations, etc. They basically close down the city for a few hours — and these aren't free.

I've never paid to run in an event (and probably will never). However I can fully understand why some people would do it. They aren't paying to run 42.2km on some winding course. They are paying to be part of an event / a celebration, where tens of thousands of people run together.

      • The man has spoken, now back in your box @baldur

      • Also all amenities are provided too, that's extra $$$

      • +2

…also paying for a medal and a finishers shirt :) sometimes freebies too e.g. the unused energy gels you pick up on the run

        • +7

Is that how you spot an ozbargainer during a race? Those who secretly putting extra gels into the pocket…

          • +2

@scotty: I'll be doing the OZB gang sign at the finish line

          • +1

            @scotty: That was me!

I thought, oh bugger, I forgot to bring gels. No matter, there's plenty all over the road :)

Bonus : Get to sample lots of different gels

            • +1

@uzz30: That's cool when you grab a few more to be used later, but as per OzBargain morality guidelines, just make sure you don't broden them and try to sell on the Classified the day later :)

  • +3

Amazing deal! Look forward to seeing fellow ozbargainers next year!

There should be a team for ozb that have signed up using this deal!

    Thanks again for sharing

  • can i refund my super early bird and get this one?

    anyone tried this?

    • They replied to me with No - still going to try

  • +20

"What is your inspiring story? (Optional) "

    'OzBargain sign up'

  • +13

Thanks OP!! I have signed up for my first marathon now. To all those people who run on the street and never participate in a paid event.. do it, if you can afford it! There is something special about running with other people who are all nervous, have all been training and have their own goals in mind. Everyone is so supportive and it is a way to test your mental and physical strength. I ran a 10k in Malta this year along with some other half marathons and they have all been exceptional memories, especially the ones where they close off the streets. There is something very cool about people cheering you on across the line no matter what time you have run!

    • Park runs are free.

      • Correct! very different though. Same community feel, so you start there, but the next level is an organised 10k or greater event

    • +2

Apparently you can also just drive around Albert Park lake for free without spending tens of millions of $$$ on developing a race car.

Can you let Ferrari know they don't need to bother?

      • Not during the race…

        Where as here, you can

  • -3

    Hi - thanks OP

  • +2

I've never been more annoyed to have paid early bird prices.

  • marked as OOS.

is the code no longer working?

  • The promo code entered has already been redeemed [ASICS4220]

  • Great! Snagged myself a spot as a true ozbargainer, now I have to start running

    • You gonna wear a custom made 'Ozbargain' bib &/or singlet? "Proudly Sponsored by OzBargain".

      • That's a good one. I wonder if I can chnage it haha

  • Says you also get access to a free 12-month subscription to Runkeeper Go, but cant seem to find how to redeem this?

    • Last year I got an email a few months after signing up, I guess it'd probably be something similar for this year.

  • Let me know when the deal comes back……………it was still available when I first opened that page and then OOS before I clicked that Buy button……………sign….

  • +1

Can’t wait for running shoes deals in the upcoming year.

  • Damn I was waiting for this and missed it☹️

  • Let me know if anyone wants to transfer their ticket! Happy to pay the transfer fee

    • Same here, happy to cover cost and transfer fee of entry if anyone changes their mind about running the marathon. My DMs are open 👍

  • Was hoping to run my first marathon with this deal! sold out so quickly!

Anyone who is willing to transfer, pls reach out thx

  • +5

Anyone who knows the Sydney Marathon organizer , please contact them and let them know there are a huge amount of eager marathon runners piled up on OZBargin… please

  • Just saw this. Guess I missed out.
On second thoughts, 🤔 Yeah, given my bad knees, guess I will miss out next year too.
The best I can do is walk.

  • What, already sold out??? Lol

  • well that went fast ! cheers for posting

  • +5

did the mara this year with the same deal… definitely a beautiful and scenic course… hills and heat were a killer though… coupled with hidden costs such as accommodation, flights and eating out…it kind of negates any sort of discount so i told myself i wouldn't be doing it again… but my inner ozbargainer couldn't help myself so looks like i'm going to sydney again next year!

  • I don't know how I missed this :(( Hopefully there's another sale on..

  • Missed this as well
