I have this on my van as the sole method of charging my second battery (170ah 12v lipo4) and it works a treat. Seems to consistently be able to pump out >40ah into the battery while driving, meaning my battery is kept at its optimal steady state nearly constantly. No need for solar unless I'm set up somewhere for >3 days without external power or I'm running an inverter to charge my eMTB.

    • Same, I haven't found the need for solar panels yet as my 200ah LiFePO4 would last me for >3 days easily too. And I would most likely drive for an hour somewhere during those days which is a good 50A pumped back into it. Or if desperate, just run the engine for 30 mins or so.

From monitoring I've found it pumps 53A when running. Got 10mm2 cables on it which feels warm to the touch but never hot.

Wow that's fantastic, 53A is a lot of current, it's like filling your water bottle with a fireman's hose, but if it works that's all you want.
I actually have one of these Renogy 12V 50A MPPT DC to DC Battery Charger sitting in a box that I bought after seeing an OzB post.
I have a Redarc battery isolator charging my auxillary 130AH lithium battery and have never got around to pulling this battery charger out of the box.
But even if this Renogy battery charger could put in 10A I would be happy with that amount of current flowing into the battery, from my little 1.2L Skoda Fabia engine!!!

        • whats the Li battery you have in your rig

@ssd01: It's a Voltax 135ah not 130ah as I stated above. I use it mainly to run my Waeco 45L fridge and it has no issue in doing this for around 4 days
without having any solar or input from the car. It was cheap which I was worried about, but according to Waeco this fridge draws about 1A/hour,
so that should be close to 100A over 4 days, and the battery will still be on 12.0V or above, so I'm pretty happy with it.
I've had the battery for about 2 years now and it gets used regularly.

            • @PukeyLuke: yeah,, thats great,, i am looking at voltax 100ah. On eBay I can get it around 405. and burning sell for 441. might end up with Bunning even though its a bit higher bc of their return policy.

I have this and it's pretty damn good for the money.

Few things to bear in mind

    1. It's not a small unit, so mounting it in the engine bay may be problematic

    2. The unit is 50A, but will only pull 25A if it detects any PV input. The easy way around this is to put your PV on a relay NC contact, and just use the DC charging signal to trigger the relay. Thus, when the car is off you have the PV closed, and then the charger is operating the PV is open.

Wait… You mounted this in the engine bay?

      • Nah mounted it in the back of the wagon.

Running the 30A in a 200Ah lithium battery box, works a treat and happily pumps 30A into my battery from my 2 x 250W panels.

  • This is the feature that got me excited:

【RJ45 Communication Port Featured】 Bluetooth Monitoring Ready! Exclusively available with the BT-2 Bluetooth Module accessory and Renogy DC Home App available on the IOS and Google Play Stores, you can monitor this dc dc charger remotely and simply through your phone and stay constantly updated.

It's cheaper with the Bluetooth accessory. Why?
I don't want to buy the wrong one

    • +1

Yeah I bought it on eBay with the Bluetooth option and it came to $211. I did use an extra targeted $15 voucher though.

Buy first, ask questions later - an OzBargain tradition.

      • got it to 216.61 ,, not sure how to get it down to 211

  • Mine arrived today, bought off eBay with the "Bluetooth Accessory" option…

But there is no Bluetooth accessory included in the shipment. Grrr.
