How is this different to using Waze?

    • +16

Google maps now shows you any speed/red light camera . It also makes a loud noise just before the camera by 50m

      • So is this app an overlay onto Google Maps?

        • Not sure but ive been using google maps, and good thing is it will alert you if the camera is in your direction on the intersection

          • @easternculture: Ah ok. I was a bit confused about your response to OP. Kinda sounded like you were explaining the difference to Waze (which Google bought).

          • -1

@easternculture: I always wonder how people flag these, whilst driving, without serving all over the road - or perhaps that's why so many people serve all over the road?

            • @RichardMelbourne: Turn on Autopilot*

              *Requires a Tesla

PS: Probably against the law in some states as it's not navigation related.

              • +1

                @duke meister:

                *Requires a Tesla

Whilst they don't advertise it as autopilot (for legality reasons obvious to a primary school kid), the Mrs' Palisade has Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist.
With both on, it's effectively an 'autopilot". 🤣

              • +1

                @duke meister:

                Turn on Autopilot*
                *Requires a Tesla**

                **Requires a Hearse

            • @RichardMelbourne: Cant tell if serious. I'm no peter brock but Its not hard mate.

            • +1

              @RichardMelbourne: Same.
Most indicators are millimetre perfect, so unless you have a passenger enter the spot and details for you then I have no idea how you can pinpoint issues while driving.

              • @cheapskatez: At 100km/h, you're covering about 27m per second.
With even just 400m notice, you've still got about 15 seconds to react.
                That's HEAPS of time.

You don't need mm perfection. It's just a warning to let you know you're approaching something of interest.

            • @RichardMelbourne: It's 3 quick presses… report, hazard category, hazard type.
And if on car screen (Android Auto, etc.), it's no different then adjusting your aircon!

      • +2

        @easternculture

How do you turn on the alert notification? There's no option in the settings. Do you have to use in with Android auto?

        • I'd like to know too.. never seen this option while navigating in google maps

      • +1

Google maps doesnt show me any speed light cameras.

  • +3

    Is this comparable to Waze?
Used to use Waze religiously back in the day but these days it uses way too much battery

    • +36

Tried the app for 5 minutes - looks junk and full screen ads
      Uninstalled

      • +2

wouldnt the Premium get rid of the ads?

      • -1

"Code not found" for code OP. So uninstalling too.

        • +3

I reached out to a mate that has an Android phone, and the code works

        • +18

          I can confirm it works.
Go to the left of the screen where it's the little 🏠 (Home)
          Then click on Settings
Then go all the way down until you find Promo code.
Copy Paste the Promo code that's on OP and you will get the activation.

Edit: Advantages of the premium version:
          - No advertising
          -Priority updates
          app for Android Auto
          app for Android Wear

          • +2

            @Scrooge McDeal: Good man.

          • +3

@Scrooge McDeal: Thanks, tried again. I obviously read the instructions without comprehending. Using "BF23" works so much better than using code "OP" :/

        • +1

Worked for me. Home > Settings > Promotional code

        • +3

@snark Instructions unclear. D!ck stuck in washing machine.

      • -1

        Yeah but there's 80+ upvotes 😂

        • +1

I guess that's 80 (now 141) people with comprehension skills at least equal to that of a six year old.

    • +1

Wireless charger in many modern cars… or even just a USB plugged in for a car like mine solves that issue. 🤷‍♂️

  • +15

I just wish Google would intergrade the cameras into google maps. I find it inconsistent and sometimes it will tell me and sometimes there is nothing. I can see similar features that waze has coming to Google Maps since they bought them. However, I don't think they ever have the same amount of community contribution.

    • +4

they do? I use google maps and regularly see camera icons on freeways etc? didn't google buy Waze?

      • +4

They do but only for those random cameras reported by road users. Most of the fixed cameras in intersections etc aren't shown on Google maps from what I know and experienced.

        • +4

Fixed speed cameras in Sydney are showing for me on Android Auto using Google maps. And I get a beep sound too as I'm approaching them. They appear as orange coloured cameras on the map.

          • +2

@Trishool: I have Amigo app (by Tom Tom) and it works heaps better than Google maps for fixed speed cameras. Best thing about it is that you can set it up to overlay the Google maps as a small icon on top, which shows your speed etc and can also set up to automatically come up when your phone connects to the car. From my experience having both apps running parallel, Amigo picks up a lot more than what Google maps does. Very handy and works great.

            • @npnp: I did like it but it had too many wrong speeds for me 60 km which should have been 50 and vice versa around
              Bundaberg Qld

        • That’s weird, the nav on my Hyundai does it and issues a warning on approach to a fixed speed or red light camera, even in the background while I am using CarPlay.

          I think Hyundai use tomtom.

      • Google did buy Waze, end of last year?

    • Yeah pretty sure they're just importing the Waze reports straight into Google maps nowadays

      • +5

There are no reports when I'm using google maps. So waze is better for me.

    • Google should do that and incorporate full offline map capability (rather that caching sections only) as well. They can easily charge a subscription and many users will pay for this service.

      • +4

As someone who drives heavy vehicles for a living, I cannot for the life of me understand why they don't offer a "premium" google maps with features such as this, increased stop limit (as in more than up to "I" like it has now) bridge heights and weight limits. I know almost everyone I work with would pay for this in a heartbeat. The standard offering is good, but obviously isn't intended for such vehicles and really seems like they could do this so easily.

        • It's not worth the return on effort for Google. The money they'd make would be minute compared to the amount they make from selling invaluable traffic data to Governments.

      • I think they have it for the US, we looked at the option when we were there last but the car we got had an amazing gps

You only need to download the area youre using, im not sure you would need a full map as that would be massive

    • +4

Spot on. I use waze with android Auto because it has 2 things Google maps doesn't. The speech camera / police / hazard warnings and the speedometer overlay.

Google maps however seems to overall work much better and search functionality actually works. Waze will often show me locations thousands of kilometres away before showing me a street that's 5 minutes away.

      • I like both, but often does take me weird backroads even though i have it on the same settings as google. The hazard warning is great too I love this feature and reporting weird things I see on the road haha

  • +44

Just use Waze, we don't need more dis-integration of cameras reportings and possibly missing out.

    • +1

Reading this comment just made me realise dis-intergration and disintegration have rather different meanings. English is weird.

      • What is the differences. I searched it and nothing particular pops up.

      • +2

        There is no "dis-intergration".

There is disintegration (separation of smaller fragments from the whole), and integration (joining together of smaller fragments to form a whole).

        • Woops. I meant dis-integration.

    • +7

Agreed, but you can't neg a deal just because its a different app to the one you like 🤷

    • +6

Then they will start charging you to use waze. Better to decentralize before we end up with another youtube monopoly. Youtube was free without ads too. Google are here to make money.

      • Why would they charge for Waze when the app itself generates user-generated speed camera data? I would have thought that would be counterintuitive.

    • -1

Last time I tried Waze there was a frustrating amount of advertising. I'm not going back

  • Excellent. Works for me

  • -8

Code didn't work on my android.

  • +1

    Thank you, Mr BG.
Code worked on my work Android phone.

  • Nothing for iOS?

  • -2

I just came to know that tesla car maps doesn't give speed cam alerts 😂, love EV owners

    • -1

      Why should it?

      • -1

Because it uses Google maps and it's $$$$$

        • Uses Google's map data, that's all. Plus they cost no more than comparable cars.

  • Promo Code just worked on my Android

  • Just used the code on my burner android phone. Worked without a glitch.

  • +7

Pointless app that tries to make money with ads.

Just dilutes the reporting. Use Waze.

    • +1

Most people put effort into stuff to try to make money…

Does this deal bypass ads by enabling Premium?

  • Can confirm. Code works.

I made sure I used cap. The code might be case sensitive.

    • Does it have ads?

      • Don't think so once I've upgraded it but I've also uninstall it.

The whole interface is very primitive. I'll run with waze

  • +1

    Premium mode activated. Thanks Op.

  • +2

These types of apps are only as good as the user base that supports them by highlighting road updates.

Waze has been around about a decade… there are hundreds of users constantly updating road conditions ahead.

  • +1

thanks BG , worked for me

  • +1

Thanks OP, installed it and code works, go into settings and added the code and it says premium version. Cheers :)

  • +5

I hate using waze because of the Interface and it doesnt direct as well as google maps but i want the speeding and cameras notification. Is this app able to run in the background automatically with notifications and sounds whilst google map is running? Or any other app that can do the same?

    • +1

      Yes, can run in background.

    • +2

Yup, this is the only issue with Waze i find, its navigation formulas arent as good as googles (the best i found back in the day was Tomtom but i havent used them for years so not sure if google formulas are better now), Waze picks some really odd and weird choices and sometimes ends up being considerably slower or silly choice. But i use it for the cameras and police warnings etc. Shame Google doesnt have it built in. i knwo some peopel who have both waze and google maps going at the same time

      • Waze shows you the route a little bit further especially at the intersections so you know which lane you should go into in case you have to make another turn in 300 metres.

  • +4

That radar detector just paid for itself

  • Waze sometimes just show a small popup window for cameras, no voice alert.
    anyone with the same issue?

    • +1

If your speed is lower than limit, sometimes the voice alert wont sound. That needs to change I think

  • +1

use tomtom amigo best app for this kinda stuff

  • +1

Thanks OP. Code works for me.

Anyone checked if there is virus or anything like that in this app?

    • +1

Android Play store does all that these days

      • Oops. Im still under the impression there are heaps of misued apps in the Play Store.

  • +1

got a few push notifications from this app after i had installed it. uninstalled.

  • I must have done something wrong…. I have been charged $61.33

  • +2

I'm all for supporting smaller Devs, but seriously, how is this a better value proposition than Waze?

  • Is Speed cameras Widget worth getting?

  • Does some stupid thing asking me for CC details to continue. No deal

  • Only android? Guess I’ll keep speeding on iOS

  • What's the diff to pro version?

  • +1

I would change the 50M warning to over 300 meters. I don't know how far a Lidar can shoot, but at 50m the ticket has already been issued before you even slow.

    • All the cameras near me have triggers in the road surface by the camera, so I'm not sure this is an issue.
Even the freeway gantry-mounted units are basically pointing down at the road.

Are there ranged speed cameras that will tag you from a distance ?
