JPY ¥200 Cashback When You Top up JPY ¥3000 on Suica with Apple Pay @ Mastercard Travel Rewards (Activation Required)

260

In case you didn't know, MasterCard has a cashback program of its own too that works worldwide, called MasterCard Travel Services.

It is available for selected cards. For Australian cards, I am currently only aware that the Commbank Ultimate Awards and the 28⁰ Global Platinum Mastercard, both of which do not charge international transaction fees, offer access to the program. If you know of more cards that have access, feel free to chime in.

Spend JPY 3,000 with East Japan Railway Company by topping up to Suica via Apple Pay, get JPY 200 cash back.

The Suica is a prepaid e-money card for moving around and shopping. There is no more need to buy a ticket from a vending machine. Just touch your Suica to the ticket gate and the fare is automatically deducted from your Suica. The Suica can be used not only for JR East trains. The Suica can also be used to pay for things with e-money. For traveling in Japan, the Suica makes a more pleasant trip.
How to access this offer

  • Says my 28degree "We are sorry!
The card you entered is not eligible. Please enter another Mastercard card number."

  • I am about to head to Japan. I can't figure out how to get Suica on my iphone IN ENGLISH

    • What are you having trouble with? Are you adding it via your wallet? Mine shows up fine for what it’s worth.

    • Don't use the Suica App - use Apple Wallet to add it directly. The app is not required.

      • Yeah, downloaded the app. I'm brand new to Iphone - how do I get it on my wallet?

        • Click on the plus symbol and then add transit card, search for Suica.

  • BankWest doesn’t seem to be eligible.

  • Just logged in to Mastercard Travel Rewards.
Activated this offer on my 28⁰ Global Platinum Mastercard.
Interesting. But don't have Apple Pay to use it, or going to Japan soon.

Signed up to Mastercard Travel Rewards in previous Deal
Back then, it looked like setting up Mastercard Travel Rewards on my card failed. But later was able to log in with my account & password

    • A true OzBargainer would now buy an iPhone and book a trip to Japan to utilise this offer. ;)

      • Lol - buy an iPhone & buy flight to Japan at very short notice to save $10.20 max!!!
        A true OzBargainer wouldn't be that crazy😜

I've travelled to Japan so many times!
        A max of 5 x $2.04 cashback by 31/12/23 won't change my travel plans!

Besides, I usually travel well away from cities & the reach of the Suica Card!
Have hitchhiked in more remote areas of Hokkaido, Okinawa, & mountain paths🎏

        Suica Card areas of use
Good if you already are travelling to selected areas of Japan this year.

you get to save about $160-200 on top from TRS of the iphone

          • @bazinga8888:to save $10.20 max!!!😜
Someone's blinded by their love of Apple😄

Save even more by not buying it😉

Am far too frugal, travelling overseas up to 9 months a year over so many years! Never working, just enjoying travel.
            That's my priority & username!

New 5G Android was free with 100k Telstra Plus points earnt from booking 5 nights at cheap backpackers. I don't even have a Telstra service. Why spend more??

I'm heading to Japan soon and tested this with my CBA Ultimate Awards card a couple of weeks ago as I was curious how this worked. Sure enough, 4 or 5 days later I had my cashback. There's heaps of other worthwhile offers on that site too.

Just add SUICA via the Wallet app and recharge with Apple Pay. Don't use the Suica App, it is for residents not tourists and isn't required.

  • Offer is limited to five redemptions per cardholder during the promotion period. (to 31/12/23)
    5 x $2.04 = Only $10.20 max!!! Over next 38d!

I found Mastercard Travel Rewards to be quite troublesome. Last time I activated a Don Quijote offer (https://mtr.mastercardservices.com/en/i/1527/offers/6f50b2a6…) on my 28D card and spent the required amount, I had to prompt Latitude to give me the cashback after waiting a good month. They argued with me that I didn't spend it at a qualifying store - the Don Quijote in Shibuya is actually a "Mega Donki" and that's the merchant name on the credit card statement; whereas the T&Cs call it "Shibuya Honten". Latitude or MasterCard couldn't figure out by themselves that it's the same store. After a few e-mail exchanges and showing them that there's only one Don Quijote shop in Shibuya, they finally manually credited me the cashback. I didn't feel it was worth the trouble sadly.

    • Ouch! Probably not worth the claim over $10+ cashback as you said.
I've spent plenty in Don Quijote stores😉

Spend JPY 10,000 or more at the participating Don Quijote stores in Japan, get JPY 1,000 cash back. Also expires 31/12/23

      Noticed in this T&C:
If Mastercard does not receive information that identifies your transaction as qualifying for the offer, you will not receive a statement credit.

      A different issue with 28°…
My 28⁰ Global Platinum Mastercard was suspended for suspicious activity - spending in Japan. I had notified them of my travel dates.

Couldn't pay with 28° for ride to airport from mountain town. Was Jetstar flight home. Would have had to buy new flight home if missed it💰
Fortunately had a Visa Card. Got an apology & costs refunded. But was very annoying.

      • That is strange if they blocked your card despite telling them you were going to overseas; I haven't had that happen to me before. Only thing I've ever tried in a position like yours would be to try and get in contact via online chat.

        • Only instance in well over a decade of frequent long overseas breaks.

That's why they promptly apologised, plus costs. Very rare for a financial institution.

get in contact via online chat

Was in mountainous rural area of Japan with little communication at that time. Cities have more ways of getting funds & dealing with issues. Did that with issue with Commbank from London.

My priority was to get to airport on time!
Easier to complain next day back in Oz.

Would have been terrible at start of trip. But am always prepared for financial difficulties. Long ago, waited a week in Himalayas for bank transfer! Learnt to carry multiple sources of funds💰

Am far from poor, but locals in Japan often feed or house me on my long travels. Was given us$200 while hitchhiking.
But, I give out clothes & food to those sleeping rough there.
Slept on beaches, woken quietly by locals & taken for breakfast. They thought I honoured them by choosing to sleep on their beach😉

Now, with far more experience, use Japan Post ATM in those remote areas for cash - they're almost everywhere & there's no costs.

Japan is a safe place to be without funds… for a while.

  • Disappointed that a solution hasn't been found/developed for Androids (getting suica or pasmo for phones purchased outside of Japan). Still need to bring cash in 2023. At least Revolut's rates and fees are ok.. :/
