  • If buying multiple, how to avoid import duty?

    • Separate transactions

      • At what amount important duty applies?

        • +2

          $1000 if declared.

      • Genuine question, wouldn’t Amazon US ship separate transactions together as one package therefore import duty is still payable?

        • +1

i would send the 2nd in the wife's name. :D

        • You're allowed to declare it's shared and therefore combine each person's $1000 I believe. Tho I don't know how hard they fight it as it hasn't happened to me

      • Got 2, each seperate orders. Hope I won’t get hit with duty.

    • +2

Why would there be import duty if you're buying it through Amazon AU?

      • +1

Because the packages goes through customs clearance.

    • +1

There's no import duty on computer hardware as far as I'm aware?
GST is payable, but Amazon would be looking after that/including it in the price you pay.

    • +3

      Ah yes and fire=water=grass=stupidity.

  • Sweet deal, probably more space than I need. Now, how do I grab one and make the missus think it's the perfect birthday surprise she always wanted?

    • +1

Told mine we need this for backup 😅

    • +1

Explain theres now no limits on making home movies.

Very tempting but concerned about warranty claims. Has anyone had luck getting RMAs on Amazon import drives in the past?

    • I heard that you can claim directly with Western Digital, otherwise just go back to Amazon and claim, worst they do they just refund the money.

    • Cloudie9 is correct. WD has global warranty and support. I’ve contacted them for an AU power supply for my Amazon US element portable drive. They sent one at no cost.

    • Had one arrive DOA a couple years back, and was an immediate no hassle refund.

I bought the 20tb 34% off this afternoon. Glad I was able to cancel the order to buy this one instead. 2tb extra and $100 less! 👍

  • Hmmm I just started building my media server

    • Unraid is on sale too

      • Why pay when TrueNAS is always free?

        • +1

Easier to upgrade without needing to buy drives in batches for new vdevs while also still supporting zfs if you wish to use it. Plus better community.

        • I tried both, while I might prefer the UI and granularity of truenas scale, it's much more complicated to set up and apps aren't that many, and easy to set up. For install qbittorent-VPN you just have to add your info without having to create configure file, install openvpn on truenas.
Also don't need to have 1 drive for the OS.

It made me think of why paying for windows when you can have Linux for free :)

  • Are these loud?

    • The 18TB shuck off WD Elements is not as loud as the Seagate. The Red Pro are 7500rpm drives so might be a tad louder.

  • Can i use this for a non QNAP desktop system? Bought one already

    • +1

Yeah its just a normal hard drive. Youre fine.

  • perfect for mirroring my 18tb

    • No it's still available, maybe click on the bottom right buy from other sellers? Maybe you haven't selected Amazon us one.

      • You're right. Thanks.

  • 20TB external at JBhifi for $619

  • Showing as $730.15

    • It went back to 574 but now increased to $999

  • +1

Bought it. For 22TB, this price is worth it

  • The deal is still available, not sure why OB labeled it as expired.

    • IT went out for a bit then seems like it came back on again.

  • Agreed I just bought one

  • got my ebay seagate "Brand new" 16TB order cancled——phew. not sure if i should pull the trigger on this one. will the price go better?
I'm still using my 3 TB 11yr old seagate hard drive for torrents etc-still going strong, but i had 1 seagate died on me before- time for upgrade? or should i start invest in a NAS now. will be nice to back up everything-but i make 2 copies of family photos etc-which is the most important.

    • Doubt the price will get better than this. This is usually the price for 12-16tb

  • id want to buy at least 2 because that amount of storage on a single drive without a least 1 back up would be nuts, unless you didnt care about what was on it

  • Price seems to be 732.21 now. Sad

  • Just had my order cancelled:
    Cancel Reason: Seller Cancelled
    Anyone else?
