For 11th gen i5? No thanks

The overall laptop user experience comes down to the sum of its parts, not just the CPU in the cheapest available enclosure.

  • Dedicated gpu?

The base model SLS is a bit of a weird pick, as most people buying would want the 3050Ti model for some sort of work. However the i5 model (no GPU) is pretty interesting too.

I've owned one of these but I switched to a i5/16GB Surface Pro 8 which has basically identical specs but is of course a tablet. I loved the form factor and how easily you can take notes on it.

Of course you get very good build quality and a high resolution 120Hz screen, but one thing really stood out to me:
If you largely use your laptop on a desk then the unique folding mechanism actually becomes very neat. Because the screen moves independently of the base, it means that whatever you have plugged in (USB-C display, charging cable, dock, etc) stays where it is so if you want to take notes, you can just fold the screen to the angled or flat position without worrying about unplugging everything else and then put it back. This alone made it so much better to work with than a traditional 2 in 1 where you have to lift the whole laptop to flip it around to get it tablet mode.

Some things not to like (in descending order of my complaints)

    • Price (a Microsoft tax indeed)

    • Price, again

    • No USB-A ports. This is a weird omission which they've addressed with the newer model. I work mostly at my desk with a dock so this isn't a major issue for me most of the time but it just sucks when you're on the road. Make sure you pack your dongles.

    • Performance, I guess? Yeah 4 cores isn't great compared to its rivals, but at the same time for lightly threaded tasks it runs just fine as 11th gen seems to clock fairly high.

    • Repairability. It is much more repairable than Surface devices have been in the past but it still involves removing rubber feet and dealing with glued on plastic bits. At least it's better than needing to use a heat gun…

    • To charge and use the headphone jack at the same time the cable must be oriented away from you, towards the back of the laptop as otherwise it would block the headphone jack. Not a big deal for most but if you care deeply about how clean you keep the area around your mouse of cables then this design oversight might annoy you.

Tldr, beautiful device and feels great to use but its ceiling is hampered by an older processor and price.
