I checked all these, current lowest price and equal too or better than previous deals on ozbargain (applies to Momentum 4 and XM4 only if you get 8% CR cashback).
Cashback calculated on extra 10% off price, 10% off again because CR is before tax, then minus 8% of that total.

also just quick PSA Momentum 4 known to have a lot of app bugs 8 months ago. CH720N's ANC is known to not be good at cancelling low frequencies (unsuitable for plane use). E700B is a new release from Yamaha, but I have heard in both multiple feedback/reviews online and youtube reviews that the earpads are small.

  • Which one should I get?

Brief PSA is in description that should give some info.

I put Sennheiser first because I think it's viewed as the most "Premium" therefore will grab users attention.

my opinion is Sony's a safe bet. JBL TourOne M2 is unpopular for whatever reason you don't hear much about it probably explained by it's lower price against competitors as well. Yamaha E700B improves on the older E700A model with better ANC and transparency mode and a customizable EQ in the App, BUT it ruins all that improvement with small earpads which will only suit people with small ears. And I mean small, don't risk it if you have average sized ears. I believe this earpad size issue alone and related many negative reviews has caused it's price to drop rapidly.

      • which is the most comfortable and has the best ANC ?

        • +3

          I would say WH-1000XM4.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: Thanks.

            Is XM5 much better?

            • +6

@jv: good of you to ask because I can give the answer.

XM4 performs better to XM5 in ANC for these reasons:

              • XM4 has a better seal. for whatever reason the XM5's headband and earpads cause a bad seal on most heads. A bad seal is the opposite of what you want with ANC headphones, you need the earpads to seal properly otherwise external noise is leaking in defeating the purpose of ANC. as you can imagine in a noisy environment the amount of noise leaking in is considerable.

              • XM5 has weird "auto NC optimiser" feature. it's meant to be a "smart" new feature that regularly calibrates and adjusts the ANC level depending on your environment. but for many users even on the latest firmware this actually works backwards, where even in a loud environmnet such as on a plane, the ANC level is auto reduced to Medium instead of High/Maximum. Many complaints about this and turning the feature "fully off" is very tricky and apparently it doesn't stay off. (on XM4 it's called NC optimizer, and you can do the calibration manually)

Edit: one more non ANC related thing I just remembered. XM4 folds inwards, making it more compact in the carry case and easy to handle with one hand. XM5 only has the ability to twist the earcups flat, it doesn't fold leading to a large case footprint.

I have the momentum 4s and they sound great and are super comfy, battery life is also really good. Most reviews I've seen is if you're more interested in just using for music then the Sennheiser is better but if you want better ANC and call quality then go the Sonys. When you put the Sennheiser in the case it automatically turns them off which is a cool feature and once you take them back out they turn on and will connect automatically and play whatever you last played when you put them on your head.

      • Coming from the original PXC 550, the momentum 4 has been nothing but frustration for me. The auto off feature basically never works, I have had the stupid thing randomly turn on in my bag and connect to my phone, stealing audio and making me miss important phone calls.
I've swapped one unit out thinking I had a defective but the second unit still exhibits the same silly behaviour, the auto off in the case does not work! It keeps randomly turning on and commenting to my phone.

The touch only gesture for every action is confusing and cumbersome, certain actions such as ANC mode and on/off need dedicated buttons. Using a single button to do many tasks is very annoying as you need to remember how long to hold it for each.

I do love the battery life, USB C is appreciated and the sound quality is stunning. However, for me, this lacks the attention to detail that apremkum product should have.

        • "the auto off in the case does not work! It keeps randomly turning on and commenting to my phone."

now I remember reading about that somewhere else too.

you would think that kinda thing would be fixed with updates it's been 1 year after release date.

similar experience with my Beoplay Portal's though. some bugs fixed, but still has a persistent bug where after full charge the custom EQ resets to default. it was released in 2021 barely any hope of it being fixed now.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: Honestly I could live with bugs and experiments so long there was a fall back, for example if I had a choice between toggle button and auto (so toggle will be on/off/auto) it would be fine. Here you only have 1 choice OR you've got to use the all in one button and hold it for the right amount of seconds to put the unit in sleep mode.
            annoying.

  • Can any of these work 'wired' to use on a plane with the entertainment system?

    • +3

Sony definitely will. I recommend the WH-1000XM4 as above. pay the extra over the CH720N is a good investment. ANC is top tier with XM4.

      • thanks…

      • I'll bite the bullet and get a pair since I'll be able to claim TRS as well bringing the price down < $300….

        thanks again…

        • +1

good of you to thank me. 👍

just posted impulsively because while watching TV I noticed Momentum 4 was cheapest so far and XM4 at BingLee after CR and C&C was 42c cheaper than most recent 200 vote deal.

        • +1

Don't forget to declare them on your entry back to Oz, if you have claimed a TRS refund.

          • @jackspratt: Yes…

            Question 3 apparently….

  • what about the bose qc se on amazon now? Its $249

    • I'll be honest not impressed with the recent Bose releases.
I don't have the SE but just going by feedback, the SE is a clone of the QC35ii. but I have heard in each iteration there have been minor reductions in quality.

the latest release is just called the "QuietComfort" and again looks like a clone of the SE/QC35ii design. but already a reviewer pointed out cost cutting and reduction in quality. most notable was the quality of the pleather earpads the new QuietComfort pleather was firmer and rougher, a downgrade from the previous SE model.

it seems like they are just recycling the same originally successful QC35 model and increasing the retail price every time while cost cutting on parts.

also one important thing to know about Bose ANC headphones, you cannot turn the ANC off. some prefer to have this feature to not use ANC when it's not needed. Bose only has Ambient on and ANC on modes.

      • +1

Its a clone of the q45s without a hard case.

        • yeah I remember hearing that somewhere. if SE is indeed just a QC45 without hard case, then I can say SE earpads (like QC45) most likely have slightly smaller inner diameter than QC35ii.

but as I said in a comment below, XM4 earpad inner diameter is also known to be slightly smaller than QC35ii. so QC45 earpad and SE earpad might be fine for most people? all I know is NC700 earpad is known to be cramped.

    • https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/814784 QC SE at $210 is a no brainer compared to everything here.

  • Would you say the XM4 or the Bose nc700 is better for someone who wants to wear over longer periods and has larger ears?

I understand the XM4 probably has slightly better audio and ANC but i prefer comfort alot more than perfect sound / ANC.

Just havent seen a single BF/CM deal on the nc700…

    • +1

i prefer comfort alot more than perfect sound / ANC.

      I prefer both.

    • I don't know about direct earpad inner diameter comparison of XM4 and NC700. but I know NC700 is known as the Bose with smallest inner diameter earpads, compared to say QC35 which is known to have large and deep earpads good for comfort.
you should easily be able to pull up the numbers though. just type "WH-1000XM4 earpad inner dimensions" into google and do the same for NC700.

QC45 earpads are also slightly smaller than QC35ii earpads I'll just put this in here. but NC700 is known as the smallest and even smaller than QC45.

Sony models tend to have slightly smaller earpads than say the largest on the QC35ii, but the difference is so negligible I rarely hear users complaining XM4 earpads are too cramped. XM5 earpads are slightly smaller and shallower compared to the ones on the XM4 which are slightly larger and considerably deeper earpads.

if you want comfort I recommend Bose QC35ii if you can find it as it should have the deepest and largest earpads of all. they might have changed the inner pad dimensions on Quietcomfort SE but I'm not sure. that would be a good option to try from Amazon if you can't find QC35ii.

  • I paid $429 for my Momentum 4s and was definitely worth it for me, for $360 it's a steal.

    • just be aware of the risks of cashback. cart empty before clicking through, disable problem browser extensions, avoid changing tabs clicking through google etc.

      • I've always used the mobile app and have never had an issue even on larger purchases but I basically see cashback as a bonus if I get it i never usually let it determine my purchase.

        • "but I basically see cashback as a bonus if I get it i never usually let it determine my purchase."

yeah same. how it should be.

  • Sorry Bing Lee, you waited too long and I had to go Bose. I wanted the XM4 so bad but just couldn't wait any longer for a deal.

    • +1

I've learnt the hard way that during any big-event sale (Black Friday, Boxing Day etc), there will always be one or more retailers who will crack under the pressure of sales targets, and will offer an additional x% off moments before the sales are about to end

  • Which is comfortable to wear to the gym Sony WH-1000XM4 or Sennheiser Momentum 4 Thanks

    • Neither should be worn at the gym.
      They arent waterproof.
Ipx4 rated only, so upto you if you want to run the risk

      • +2

"Neither should be worn at the gym. "

yup there is even a known issue on the Sonyheadphones subreddit. sweating in certain Sony ANC over ear headphones causes excessive humidity with skin oil build up to pass through the earpad mesh and the ANC microphone adhesive looses it's grip (doesn't come off just become slightly loose). this leads the ANC mic to be very sensitive to vibration and create a feedback loop in the ANC system. it causes a monotone sound or "squeal" as some people describe it to emit constantly when the ANC is on.

this is not exclusive to Sony, I have heard it happens with many other ANC headphones. it's just less reported I guess because those models are cheaper or they just don't sell as many units as Sony.

I do not recommend sweating in ANC headphones if you want them to last in the long run.

I have seen some higher IP rated over ear headphones on Amazon before, but I wonder how true it actually is.

        • Thanks guys some good advice here I will keep searching

          • @WwDesi: hey I remember one of the higher IP rating ANC over ear models. it was the Mackie ANC headphones. MC-50BT and MC-60BT are IPX5 rated.
seem to be discontinued though can't find many places and Amazon JP via Amazon AU prices are high. they were cheaper when I saw them via Amazon US even after conversion (I remember MC-60BT being roughly $200 AUD + delivery). out of country import stuff costs typically costs more in japan.
            https://www.amazon.com.au/Mackie-MC-50BT-DJ-Headphones/dp/B0…
            https://www.amazon.com.au/Mackie-MC-60BT-Cancelling-Bluetoot…

second number of IP rating is water resistance. not as much of an improvement as I remembered but still IPX5 means protected against jets of water, compared to IPX4 splashes. so should be an improvement. problem is sweat is like micro water particles which I think can pass through the protective mesh inside the earpads.

awesome. yeah I logged back in just now because I didn't feel like I was going to fall asleep.

when I posted I planned to post then logout, but I didn't expect the comments to be so active so spend an extra 45 mins or in the comments after posting.

  • Got the SOny XM4 - thanks!

    • silver or black??

      • the silver one!

        • +1

nice. yeah I am in that white headphone phase at the moment. up until now always bought boring black.

  • Deal's already gone isn't it? It's 12.11am right now and the 10% off was until midnight yesterday

  • Has anyone received their email to pick-up? Web site says 1hr pickup, but 3 days later my order is still stuck in 'a very
strict fraud screening process ' to 'protect our online customers'.
How does Bing making false representations about how quickly online orders will be ready protect us? By making me wait, what are they protecting me from?

    • hows it going? picked it up yet?

      • Finally came today. Was my experience a one off stuff up by Bing, or did others have the same experience?

        • "Finally came today."

good to hear. enjoy your, whatever you got!
