I wouldn't buy a CPU on AliExpress, especially if it seems too good to be true.

    • -8

As long as it arrives fine it should be ok, never seen or heard a cpu fail

      • +33

It could be a 7500F with the heatspreader from a 7800X3D or any random junk.
What are you gonna do about with when the store is offline in 3 weeks or if they ask you to send it back and claim you never sent it?
Take them to court in China?

        • +15

          Credit card chargeback 🤷

          • @Kazusa: I actually didn't know you could do that.
I dont think i want to go through the whole thing, but it's good to know.

          • @Kazusa: I thought charge backs only worked for fraudulent transactions? Eg ones you didn't authorise. If you legitimately buy something - even if it's a scam - they wouldn't do a charge back. At least that's my experience with friends that have bought obvious scams (I have some less-bright friends 🙄).

              @incipient: https://www.commbank.com.au/business/payments/help/chargebac….
“ The goods and services purchased were not as described or defective”
Have to pay with a credit card though, debit cards are usually useless

              • +2

@Kazusa: Ohh credit card. Good to know! That may actually make getting a proper credit card worth it! Thanks for the time to get the link.

              • @Kazusa: What, the link literally says "debit or credit card"?

I personally have successfully claimed a chargeback on my Commbank Visa debit card.

        • +2

you can also pay with paypal. and I believe Aliexpress has some sort of coverage aswell but you could read up on it before buying

    • +1

Its a good deal. I would buy it. The Ryzen 5 7500F I ordered off Ali Express for $239 came just now - perfectly legitimate - works and not a scam. Fast shipping - just over a week. Buying CPUs off Ali Express is a good tactic to save money.

  • +18

I don't have the stomach to spend money like that on Aliexpress

  • +12

Good price but the risk/reward doesn't pass the bar test..
DOA or any warranty fun will be a nightmare no doubt.

    • +4

100%, I saw the price and felt bad about my ~$550 7800X3D from the weekend, then I saw "AliExpress" and thought "yeah nah I'm good"

  • +23

I love how an AliEx page will have a title like AMD Ryzen 7 but if you're not careful with the sub options you'll end up with a cucumber peeler.

    • -1

Why would you need to peel a cucumber?

I have had a intel cpu that arrived DOA. It was in 2016 when the 6700k was the top end cpu. Intel was a pleasure to deal with and had a replacement shipped out within 2/52. Did my head in until I took it to MSY and got them to test it on another Z170 motherboard to confirm it was a faulty DOA CPU. Its going to take 3 weeks to arrive on Aliexpress and with Christmas shipping delays, who knows when you will actually get it. The warranty support is going to be problematic. Might be better to wait for another shopping express circa 520Aud deal instead.

  • +1

cpus do, unfortunately, arrive dead. have had to deal with it before after replacing psu, motherboard, and ram first. difficult to diagnose and even more annoying when it happens.

    not worth the risk!!

    • +4

Had the same, with a CPU from AliExpress.
Took ages to diagnose, as it would just crash. Wouldn't even bluescreen or log in event viewer.

It would work for a week or so, then go down.
Eventually it did a bluescreen that had a watchdog timeout error.
By the time I diagnosed the issue, couldn't get a refund.

At first, thought it was the motherboard. Tried updating the BIOS, and for some reason the motherboard software to update the BIOS deletes the old BIOS then installs the new. Failed on installing the new.

It was a $1k server motherboard, but was outside of the warranty period. No dual BIOS or any way to restore it without a speciality tool that isn't available to purchase for customers. Thanks Gigabyte.

Aliexpress 'buyer protection' was useless. Seller sent me a wrong item, Ali conceded it was the seller's mistake but they wanted me to pay $45 postage to send it back to HK … which they may or may not later reimburse as friggin Aliexpress coupon. The effort to find a rep and get it compensated is another time sink.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/805341

Outside the dispute resolution process (which doesn't really protect consumers), good luck finding an actual Ali rep to talk to over there, let alone a helpful one.

    • +2

Just do a bank chargeback, it's literally so simple. I've had even paypal kowtow several times when they wanted to protect scammers.

      • +6

Yep, I skipped Paypal and did a chargeback. Just letting people know the buyer protection stuff is worthless.

        • Did two AliExpress buyers protection claims last week.

One was for a faulty flashcard (9 worked, 1 was DOA) and a switch backplate and joycon shells, which was missing the SL and SR buttons

Flashcard was refunded, including shipping cost, no need to return.

Half the cost of the backplate and joycon shells was refunded with no need to return, which was more than enough to cover the cost of the $2 SL and SR buttons.

      • Pretty sure that Aliexpress will ban you for chargebacks. So if you want to use Aliexpress in the future with your Name/Card/Shopping Address… It's not always the get out of jail free card that some people tout it as.

        • -1

Then just make a new account.

          • -1

@donman92: Did you not read my message lol it's not that easy, it can't have the same info iirc.

            • @theguwithnoname: Well, Luke Skywalker, Peter Parker and Bruce Wayne live in your place and they can have their own PayPal accounts.

    • +1

Interesting, as I recently raised a dispute for the wrong item. Seller ghosted me, so AliEx just refunded me very quickly.

Granted it was a cheaper item, so they did not ask me to return it.

  • I wonder how would warranty work if you have problem with the unit

    • +1

      It doesn't.

  • I only spend less than $50 on Aliexpress per item. Thats all im willing to spend

  • +1

A lot of risk, headache and bullsh*t for some miniscule savings.

"All products are 100% brand new and tested before dispatch"

So not brand new. Used and "tested", if not for a firmware overwrite.

  • +1

    is this after tax?

if you get scammed on aliexpress you’re doing it wrong, only the weak get scammed

also amd probably miscalculated thinking gamers can afford $800 cpus, big lolz there

  • I gambled on a tray AMD 4000 APU off AliExpress and it paid off.

Milage may vary, but be sure that you know you're trying your luck here.

  • recently had my 12400f die after a year of use for no particular reason, returned it to bpc tech and they replaced it with a new one after testing it the following day, I suspect it wouldn't be as easy with AE

    • +1

intel will give you free postage on warranty anyway

not sure why ppl are so spooked at aliexpress, they set the ceiling on price they’re not even cheap these days, they don’t need your business Australian is tiny

      • Assuming you get an Intel warranty with a CPU sold from a random aliexpress store.

Not all CPUs come with an Intel warranty, CPUs packaged in OEM trays are generally up to the OEM/reseller to warranty, not Intel.

        • this is true which is why DYOR

I wouldn’t buy one there simply because they’re not even cheap, but people claiming everything is fake are delusional you have to almost be stupid to get scammed

  • Is this really just a side-step the GST kinda deal? or do you get slugged the GST on it when it comes in?

    • Gst is included in the price

      • Doesn't really say anything. be interesting to see you get a tax invoice or similar that confirms as much..
not really interested to sign up to see but doesn't look like they split out the gst or tax elements

      • No it's not. AliExpress add it in checkout. I just added to cart and applied the promo code and it's $525.37 delivered after tax.

        • +1

          Deal ended

  • I tried buying Fuji batteries for my X-T3 camera from AliExpress as I needed 'geunine' ones to work with my battery grip. Even though the seller had good reviews and claimed they were real, they ended up being copies and my battery grip wouldnt recognise them.
