Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms detect the early presence of carbon monoxide emitted from gas sources such as heating and cooking systems, vehicle engines, fuels and blocked chimneys. CO alarms are intended to supplement conventional smoke alarms, not replace them. A CO alarm is not a smoke alarm and, therefore, will not satisfy legal requirements regarding the installation of smoke alarms in the home.

Can be installed anywhere – not specific to kitchens.

If you've got a gas heater, one or two or these are a must I reckon. I never understood the 'standard'/government-issued advice to have your heater checked by an (expensive) expert once a year to make sure it's not spewing out deadly carbon monoxide. The fact is, the day after having it checked, it could develop a serious problem and commence doing just that; and that situation would remain undetected for almost a year.

Clearly the logical thing to do is to have a quality carbon monoxide alarm always in operation in the near vicinity of the heater, instead of having the heater 'checked' once a year. The government should be advocating the use of these things, instead of advocating semi-useless but expensive yearly heater 'checks'.

100% couldn’t have said it better myself.

As usual government decides to do all these mandatory checks more to prop up the tradies by giving them millions of dollars in extra work (eg the new 2-3 yearly electric and gas checks) and win some votes rather than genuinely because they care about our safety.

You don’t see any of this sort or rubbish in other countries.

I installed one of these in the room with my heater years ago. It’s there 24/7 protecting me from that heater plus also the main ducted heating. Its battery lasts 10 years and it cost less than $50. But that’s not pumping easing money into the pockets of overpaid tradies.
