Was on the hunt for a quality charcoal grill and stumbled upon the Weber Kettle Premium 57cm at Bunnings. It's not on sale/clearance, but the price is very low compared to other retailers and Weber's website. Plenty of stock available for pick up and instore buy at the time of posting.

It might be a grey import though, but at such a great price for a BBQ grill, would you even care?

One thing to note: This model doesn't have the black bottom ash tray, so it could be an older version. Also, I'm not sure about a built-in temperature gauge, but most of us would use a thermometer probe anyways.

Order went through smoothly, so no price errors here.

Some info from the website:

    • Correct, but noted that the $499 one has a black ash tray at the bottom so this might be an older version.

      • The one in the post is an import from the USA. Says in the description. The Aus models are a little different.

Thanks for this. Would you say it's worth the $200 price difference?

  • No stock in SA. 😥

Can someone convince me not to buy this.

I don't own a BBQ, but have sold myself on getting a Weber, but should really buy an old one from Gumtree for $50 instead of a brand new one for $300 hah

edit: luckily, no stock near me, impulse purchase averted.

    • +2

      100% you need a weber!

Having said that, a marketplace $50 one with a new GBS Premium Grill will be awesome for another 20 years as well.

      • +2

I've managed to convince myself I need one. While simultaneously, I'm convinced I'll barely use it out of laziness.

the true level 69 ozbargain wizard way would be to pick it up for free during kurbside pickup days
even if it is a bit roughed up which invariably like at least 69% of them are by the time they reach the kurbside.

you do need a weber but imo gas baby q so much easier.

      • That's a unicorn/urban legend. 1:100,000 people would be dumb enough to ditch one for free like that.

        • +1

So many around here you can be selective. Picked up some mint units. In fairness, they were everywhere when Webber Qs came out. Now there's Webber Qs being thrown out everywhere and the original Webbers get grabbed pretty quickly.

Just scour the rich burbs on council pickup dayz.

          • +1

@Naigrabzo: My council got rid of the yearly ones and now it's all tip vouchers and manually calling them up for one house. Was a good event when it was on as you'd get some great stuff around

            • +1

              @lancesta: Damn man. that's annoying.
I think mine might be similar. Havent thrown away stuff for a while… :)

    • +8

I have a similar one, Jamie Oliver version.

I have had it for 9 years, I BBQ a LOT, I've used this maybe 5 times.

I use the small Weber Go Anywhere about 95% of the time.

Save your hard earned money, you don't need this.

      • +1

I prefer the WGA too. Much quicker to set up and efficient to do cooking for a small family.

        • A couple of reviews on weber.com talk about the vents being hard to open when hot. Any truth to it?

          • +2

@soan papdi: Yes as the vent cover gets hot you will need gloves to pull it upwards with your hand to open it. It's stiff in the first place, and it gets stiffer due to the differing rates of metal expansion for the different parts.

It's no big deal in my opinion:
If the lid is open, i don't think the vent makes a difference.
If the lid is on, hold the lid down and tap the vent flap up with the back of your tongs/whatever, or keep the vents open and just tap down on it to close it

          • +1

@soan papdi: The vents do get hot and become harder to open due to expansion of metal. But is not a deal breaker and i usually use the tongs to knock it up or down to move it to my requirement.

          • @jv: Not a serious question I hope.

      • It's too hot right now, I hope it changes to colder.

    • +1

Grab one from marketplace for $50.

    • +2

I've not used a new one but common opinion among the weber community is that quality has gone downhill since production was moved to China. Buying second hand you're probably getting better quality, you'll skip the 'cant put a scratch in it' phase, and you'll have more money for accessories (the rotisserie kit is great)

      • +1

        This man speaks truths!
(As a multiple webber and offset owner)

  • grey import for sure - so not sure what the warranty will be like

Weber's distribution strategy in Australia is to be with certain big box retailers (think TGG and BCF) and not Bunnings for example in hardware think they're with Mitre 10)

    • +3

I feel like Weber you probably don't need a warranty. Unless they went to shit like every other good brand seems to.

    • +1

If you know how to maintain and take care at minimum, it will last forever.

  • I'm in a similar position to @juph0rry, want a charcoal BBQ but something small I can put away. Won't be used more than once a week. I'm tossing between these two. Any opinions?

    Go-Anywhere Charcoal Barbecue: $149

    https://www.jumbuckbbqs.com.au/barbecues-grills/portable-cha…
57cm Black Charcoal Kettle BBQ: $69.

    • +3

I have the $69 jumbuck, the price might be tempting but I wish I get the Weber one, despite the huge price differences. My friend has a Weber one and it's miles better than the jump buck. It does the job but with frustration. I love charcoal BBQ but the jumbuck makes me hate it now.

    • +1

the go anywhere looks kinda cute but maybe too small? like maybe a habachi grill is more your speed?

      • I get what you're saying and you're right, it is a bit small. My usage won't be heavy. Just two young kids, so a few sausages, chicken drumsticks or steak. No plans to cook an entire chicken or pork shoulders etc, we're not much into meat but want to add it to our diet maybe 1-2 times a week at most.

        • Put it this way

I have a nice outdoor dining area, and a Weber bbq (gas) and I still rather just cook up sausages steaks etc on electric cook top instead lol too much effort to clean up

It does taste better bbq though

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: That's a valid point, however my wife's a vegetarian and I'm trying to keep meat away from our kitchen and do any cooking outdoors. Speaking of which, might need to get a bar fridge too, for drinks and meat storage.

            • @soan papdi: Ok I can appreciate that.

I would still suggest a gas Weber.

While I love coal char grilled taste it’s so much effort to get it going and consistent. Gas, you’re pretty much ready to go once it hits the right temp and can regulate as needed.

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: I have a weber Q & i prefer to cook on that as there's little to no clean up, leave it running on high heat after cooking & the grill grates will burn off almost everything then just lightly brush with a wire bbq brush or wet cloth when cool

    • +1

weber products tend to be built to last with great customer service & warranty
jumbuck are cheap & I'd bet the weber lasts twice as long at least

      • Another friend also gently hinted the same thing, so did @iironhide. So that's 3 votes for weber.

    • Go-Anywhere Charcoal Barbecue: $149

Bunnings also have this for $100

    • +2

Definitely go the Weber for what you're after. Light 9 briquettes and bank them against the side and it'll run at about 120c for an hour, which is enough to cook your snags or reverse sear a steak. A bag of charcoal will last you for ages. The jumbuck will be really inefficient.

    • +1

Many/most use there's once a fortnight/month, and keep them out. Helps to have a cover.

    • +1

Don't have the jumbuck but the WGA is fantastic and can cook for a small family very efficiently. The concept of it is that you actually cook with the lid on, so once the coals are really going, it's much quicker than you might think. Plus, extra smokiness to your food.

  • A tip for anyone not use to this style of BBQ - with coals it is a convection style heating system which can easily exceed 260°C, and quite often I recall the temperature maxing out on the steel probe. Great for roasting, partial grilling/smoking. This weber is unlike conventional BBQs which have heat directly underneath the plate/grill.

    • It uses charcoal/coal briquettes like all charcoal/coal briquette style BBQs. The heat comes from where you put the fuel, if you want the heat from directly beneath the grill you put it directly beneath the grill, if you don't want it from directly beneath the grill you don't put it directly beneath the grill. If you want more heat you put in more fuel, if you want less heat you put in less fuel… it's good for anything, just takes longer to start than gas.

      • Owned a gold plus weber while back and putting coals (in basket or out of) directly beneath the grill was not the recommendation by weber and their BBQ grill book. Whilst I did not follow this recommendation, it literally does burn your food cause the heat is to close to the grill. Sausages/steaks (not adding the smoke wood chips) taste better on gas BBQ but the weber aces roasts of any kind. I've also seen professionals in the city cook with webers during market time and the meat is as tough as fuk - some people got no idea how to use em. The kettle BBQ cooking isn't like flattop BBQs which are just switch them on, slap your food on the plate/grill and cook.

        • +3

You can grill directly on a weber you just use less coals. Not rocket science.

          • +1

@Cheaplikethebird: My Weber cookbook has a plethora of both 'direct' and 'indirect' recipes. Only use the kettle a couple of times a year these days, invariably for indirect roasting. Fabulous smoky flavours and retains meat juices.

Kettle cooking is all about experimentation with the fuel. Like cobnob (I suspect) my first direct cook resulted in somewhat burnt offerings.

        • +2

Steak is way better over charcoal.

          • @bargainy: Should try steak on a konro grill (colloquially referred to as a hibachi grill) using binchotan lump charcoal. /chef's kiss

        • +2

If sausages or steak taste better on a gas bbq you're doing something very very wrong. To start with, fill up a coal basket and put it on one side of the bbq, use the hot area directly above to sear the steak for a short time then place the steak on the other side of the bbq with the lid on and a thermometer. It takes time to get the right skills built up but it's like that with cooking anything, it doesn't have to be perfect the first time.

because there is at least 100 available in NSW according to the bunnings tracker.

    • +1

It's still available. Bunnings just does not like it when you directly redirect to a product on their website it seems. If you search "Weber 57cm Premium Charcoal Kettle BBQ" on bunnings and click on the product listing it opens just fine.

  • +4

Managed to get mine discounted for $150 after I returned it due to a small paint defect and Bunnings had no stock to replace. One of my proudest bargains.

Is that Charcoal thing bad for the environment?

    • -1

Increases your carbon footprint, pretty much same ratio as farting.

Hopefully the greens wont notice this comment, or they may lobby the government for weber and fart taxes.

  • Nope, even by not using link and searching Bunnings website cannot find this product.. Matador version yes, no Weber kettles

  • This is the original series, without the ash pan , then came the premium with the ash pan, then came the ultra with the ash pan and markings on the air flow controller at the bottom then came a number of "special" editions as they got popular with specials colours .. premium is the best bet .. the VB deal recently had a premium in VB colours and that keeps coming up.. a charcoal BBQ without an ash basket is not much fun …specially with Kettle style ones since they encourage briqquettes which produce way more ash than lump charcoal

    • Can confirm the one in the post is premium, I picked up yesterday. It’s just the US version not Australian. Sadly no stock now.

  • -1

In short do not buy this one buy the VB one at the same price or buy a premium if in a hurry ..IMHO

  • Does the food cooked by charcoal taste better then gas powered?

    • It does generally impart a smoky flavour.. better is a subjective term but I prefer wood or charcoal cooking to gas

      • True true. Subjective indeed. I really want to compare the two one day….. I will hodl given that this is out of stock also.

  • Padstow Bunnings in NSW still has more than the 4 listed available just picked one up.

Good for upcoming small family gatherings.

Can confirm it is the Weber premium 57cm kettle

  • Leppington nsw has around 10 in stock

  • Still available in the ACT, by the way

  • Thanks OP. Finally got one. It’s cheaper than what Costco sells the original 57cm weber for. Got from Leppington store :)

  • +1

If anyone is still looking, there are six of these on the floor in Bunnings Kirrawee at the moment.

    • Thanks! Only 1 left now :)
