super bad layover and exchange time.

Chose them in nov to China - very good service overall (even provided everyone a bag with toothbrush, toothpaste, sleep mask, ear plugs and a pair of socks!)

    • +3

I also tried them out in November and was quite happy with the service.

Note: Possible to have baggage sent all the way to end destination on the way there, have to collect and re-checkin luggage on the way back to Aus (SYD-CAN).

I flew years ago. Very nice service and layout in the Haikou city, easy for tht transfer flight.

Never use this company, no matter how cheap it is. I had a ticket from Europe with 1 stopover in China. When I came to the airport they said that they have no seat for me. My ticket is valid, but they have no seat to onboard me. I had to go home. After a few days talking to their support they offered me a replacement with a 3-day stopover in China, otherwise, wait for a month. I took the 3-day option. When I arrived in China their customs almost got me deported and blacklisted because the airlines supposed to make a visa for me, and obviously ignored it. After a few hours the officer was kind enough to communicate to them and let them arrange the visa right there. When I was released from customs I found my suitcase severely damaged. It took about 8 month to talk to their support again to get a 200 Yuan refund for it. It's a joke compared to the real suitcase price, but they apply local Chinese policies, which have very little refunds. The flight from China to Sydney was delayed. I never had this many issues with a single company.

    • Wow that sounds super stressful. Sorry to hear about this experience.

      • Thanks. The funniest things were with my suitcase. I intended to travel in just one way, therefore got the cheapest ever suitcase. By the arrival at their front desk its wheels had completely worn off. So I had to buy a new suitcase that the first flight has destroyed right away. And at the stopover they didn't want to onboard me because I had a suitcase with huge cracks. After my not very calm explanation that this was their company who had broken the suitcase, they let me go.

    • If you haven't already, apply for EU261 compensation.

      • The country I was departinf from was not on the list where this regulation works.

    • Airlines don’t do visa for you. Other than that, you should have been compensated based on EU rules.

      • For this log stopovers it was their responsibility. For shorter ones, no issues. Officially, it is still a travel without visa, however there should be a proper application made beforehand with a specific city allowed for such things . At least it was like that when I was travelling.

Flew on one of these tickets in September and October. Overall, a perfectly serviceable experience - crew were friendly and the flights mostly punctual. Haikou Airport is small and fairly easy to navigate.

Only oddity is that on the leg returning to Australia, they would not check luggage through, meaning you had to collect bags and re-check at Haikou. Apparently this procedure was outside of the hands of Hainan Airlines. Thankfully, there were over 20 people on my domestic flight in the same situation that evening, and despite a delay on that flight, staff made sure that everyone made it in time to check in for the connecting flight (which was also delayed by about 30 minutes to wait for connections).

    • Make it both ways. Just completed my trip and had to re-check my luggages both ways. They say it's because of security reasons, but I never had that problem with other chinese airlines. Considering the infrastructure at Meilan airport, I'd say it's probably a technical issue (they don't have the facility to process checked through luggages).

I'm happy with their service (they're known for this before the airline reformed due to parenting group bankrupted) but I miss so much of their competitors' advantages in infrastructure and newer aircraft, shorter layover, better overall process and more.

      • That's right - you do have to re-check bags both ways. However on the inbound into China that's standard practice for pretty much every airline, as you have to go through customs with your bag when entering a country. Same as when you arrive in Sydney from overseas and then connect to Melbourne/Brisbane/etc.

That's weird. I never had that problem with China Southern. That's the case for yearly flights for the past decade (sans COVID). That's why I think it may has something to do with infrastructure.

          • @xmagic: Just got back from China a week ago via China Southern. Can vouch we didn't have to get our luggage and recheck. I'm assuming it could be because China Southern is a direct flight while Hainan Air is due to transiting there?

I'm planning to go visit again and like to try Hainan Air, would you know if it's baby friendly (1.5yr old)?

            • @piggiepanda: Mine was two-leg translt via CAN airport, both legs are CZ flights, baggages checked through both ways. Same situation with HNA via HAK airport, no luck. Fortunately my layover is 4.5 and 5.5 hours respectively, so no hurry.

One thing I liked HNA is that their international->domestic flights got 24/7 check-in, but the other way around (domestic->international) is not (had to wait as check-in opens 150 minutes before take off, or a little under 3 hours in reality).

I don't have a baby nor seen any babies on board on my flights with HNA, so, sorry, can't tell about their service on little guys. Though I only recall seen bassinet available on A380s (CZ and QF), but not on other larger aircrafts like B747 or A330/350, but I assume 1.5yr doesn't need one anyway?

Just came back from my trip flying with them on the previous $400 deal. i was able to change my flight and stayed at Haiko for 4 days to travel around so i don't have to stress with layovers. I then upgraded my flight from Haiko to Melb to business class for around $700AUD. One of the best flights i've travelled on.

    • +2

How do u change your flights for longer stay in haikou?

      • Would also like to know .

    • cream soda share the info boss.
also was the upgrade back to melb an extra $700? or was that the total cost ($200 + $500 upgrade). you do it last minute / via an offer?

  • +4

Just returned back last week on Hainan. It's worth it considering the price (I paid $401 SYD-CAN return on the last sale).
Their hard product on the A333 is a bit dated, however it still holds up alright. As with previous flights, the inflight entertainment touchscreen isn't very responsive and it's easier to use the arrow keys on the remote below. They provide a small pillow, blanket and amenity kit. Catering was alright, especially on the return flight. Probably because of differences in cost, the portion sizes are a bit smaller out of Sydney and the bread isn't freshly toasted. They serve dinner and breakfast both ways on the SYD<->HAK route, a little weird considering the return departs at 2am and arrives at 2pm.
The worst thing about flying Hainan now however is the timing of the SYD<->HAK flights. Arrival at HAK is now at 4am, as opposed to about 2pm pre COVID. At this time, there's very few immigration lanes open so this took a while. There's also no public transport out of the airport until at least 6am (7am for high speed rail). The return flight is not much better at 2am. The only welcome change is that all Hainan flights international and domestic now depart from T2, so there's no terminal change required.
As for the long connection time, that's why the ticket is so cheap. Unfortunately there aren't any overnight connections anymore so no free hotel like before COVID. On the forward leg, it was a 4am-6pm connection, so I just left the airport and explored the city for a bit. Your luggage is checked all the way to your final destination on the forward leg so no need to worry about that.

    • I actually prefer the older A333 layout as it is 2-4-2 in economy, compared to China Eastern/Southern which are 3-3-3.

Seats are more spacious, and you don't have to sit with strangers if travelling in a pair.

  • Hey, I am looking to buy a flexible ticket, in case of any date changes, has anyone had experience booking through trip.com or the actual Hainan Airlines site and if there is one over the other you recommend for ease of ticket changes? thanks

  • +1

Why doesnt Hainan fly BNE? Service is pretty good. Layover can be bad…

Honestly who would want to go to China, they gave us covid 19 and now a pneumonia outbreak what's next.

  • +1

Is there a way to have afew days of layover at haikou? Or better yet just return from haikou to melb without the Shanghai bit? Price was higher when I tried to do this.

  • Thanks, bought for the family during April school holiday!

  • Also how hard is it to get a visa to China these days?

    • Had a friend who recently got his Chinese visa and seems very easy.
Also if you only stay in Haikou(Hainan island), you won't need a visa.
      http://en.explorehainan.com/en/plan/visas.shtml

      • I heard about that, but then I also heard you need to travel via particular hotels and tourism groups, the amount of fake news and rumours out there, don't know which to believe.

Won't mind just going to resort at Haikou.

        • I went to Haikou in Nov and not with any tourism group, don't have any issue with the visa-free policy.
The only problem is some of the hotels or airbnbs don't accept foreign customers because of the registration system, so you might need to check before booking.

  • Any flights from Perth to Laos in Mid-late Feb?!

  • Hi ozbargainers,

I was planning on travelling to Shanghai later this month and was wondering whether it is still a good time to visit?

Have heard a bit of push back from family telling me to reschedule due to the recent respiratory issues popping up on the news.

Visa is pending and this would be my first trip to China. Any advice would be appreciated

    Thanks!
