Just spotted the WD My Cloud EX2 NAS w/12TB of storage for $595 Del via Amazon.com.au
Supplied/sold by Amazon Germany.
Free international delivery for prime.

Not crazy, super grade NAS, but should be good for a home user as a central storage and easy web accessible storage.

At the price, cant see or think of anything else in or around the same money for the capacity and simplicity…. Then again, i've not looked hard at this time of the morning.

Remember SB and CB etc… if there is any cashback on these, I dunno, seems to change almost daily at the moment… ha!

Camel mentions that it has been as low as $495 back in July, but cant seem to find any sellers coming close to $595 at the moment…

Price History at C CamelCamelCamel.

Don’t trust these devices. WD will end support with barely any notice and leave you with a device that barely works.

      device that barely works.

That’s best case. Worse case your left with security vulnerabilities they don’t fix.

        Surprised they still sell it

    • Word.

    • You don't need to expose it to the internet. Then who cares if they stop their support. In the end it's just a linux machine and you can do some customisation if you like.
I own their very first nas (3TB) and still works really good after around 10 years.

You’re underestimating how shit WD is.

Due to no real XSRF protection within the WD My Cloud web interface, any malicious site can potentially make a victim's web browser connect to a My Cloud device on the network and compromise it. Simply visiting a booby-trapped website would be enough to lose control of your My Cloud device.

It doesn’t have to be exposed directly. Other devices can be used as an entry point.

I had a 2TB one, from about the same era. A shucked the drive and put the rest in the bin. Where it belongs.

Fair enough. Mine is the worst piece of garbage now they remvoed the support last year. Its local access is a half arsed mess that needs to be reconfigured every 2 months. I ended up ripping the drive out and putting it straight into my pc cos I got over it.

  • I know people that bought this unit - avoid!

Can you let us know who these people are so we can avoid them?

  • Not that cheap.

  • Not a good deal

$49.58 per terabyte is not good

To be fair, it’s not just a HDD. It’s a NAS.

Yeah I don't trust WD's software support on their network storage units.

Even though they don't really ship with a locked down u-boot, I believe getting mainline Debian or OMV to run on one of these may require a serial header in order to change the boot args. (Well, you could probably figure out how to change them from within the stock WD image, but that'll be somewhat risky if you screw it up)

That and I'm just pretty bloody done with Marvell Armada platforms on the whole.

  • Are these still hardware encrypted drives? I had an older one and it failed so when the enclosure failed the drives were not usable in another system, it's not really a good backup solution at all. AVOID

Correct me if im wrong, and this is not for those members of OzB that dont want to upg their devices FW.
But, while WD may have decided to lock out (net exposed) access to older FW devices for security reasons, and there is no doubt issue have been found over the past in many of the lite verson type of NAS boxes. I've not heard of any issues with the latest FW of the WD NAS range…

This is a question, not a debate, nor a push back. Knowing how many members here consider aimple questions as reason to deflect or troll posts.

Out of interest, genuine discussion/question here.

I also ask - 12tb of storage with a NAS casing… what other solution are you going to get for $590?

    Synology - nope
    QNAP - nope
    Plus 2x NAS (Red/similar) drives - nope…

Again out of interest, genuine question…

    Happy weekend all!
