It seems to be a common misunderstanding shared amongst some of the OzB cohort that there can't possibly be a market for a mobile phone that just needs to be able to make phone calls, and perhaps send and receive text messages.

      Seriously.

Who is the new 110 even designed for?
        Why bother with the camera?
        Why such a small battery?
Why no 3.5mm jack for a device which exists primarily for making phone calls?

Where is my nokia brick with 3.5mm/DAC, 5000mAh removable battery, sd card slot and external antenna port?

        • Works great with AirPods Pro 2!

@tharlow: Damn, I realize this is sarcasm but I still feel triggered.

        • +1

Agree, camera is pretty pointless but the standard price difference between the 110 and 105 (same model minus camera) is marginal and JB doesn’t stock the latter—Amazon does, though more expensive right now at $69.

This is a good backup telephone and pairs well with an Amaysim PAYG SIM, especially if your main device is on a different network to Optus for added redundancy.

        • +2

It's good for parents who want their kid to have a phone but not a device to access the Internet.

I agree the rest of your questions are valid criticism. Really stupid design decisions

        • +1

Why no wifi? That would make it far more useful for voice and messaging.
We are in a world where $5 light bulbs and $2 computers (esp8266) have wifi.
Don't need no camera or HD display etc. Just connectivity.

          • +1

            @bargaino: Where can I find esp8266 for $2 ?

            • +1

              @bar gain man:

              Where can I find esp8266 for $2 ?

1.60 USD at Mouser.com, which is about 2.50AUD. Free shipping if you spend more than 50 USD.

It's the chip version though, you have to supply a PCB to solder it to. And it's a little tricky to purchase from Mouser without them adding the "Australia tax".

            • +2

@bar gain man: Aliexpress - single D1 Mini with esp8266 for $2.xx but you'll pay the same for shipping - or if you buy in a pack of 20 you'll get them for sub $3/piece delivered. That's also not just the esp8266 but a development board - an OEM who would just be putting the esp8266 chip on a board would get them far cheaper - alibaba have esp8266 chips from US$0.19 and even that is probably way more than someone like nokia would pay, given their volumes.

            • @bar gain man: I'd suggest upgrade to esp32. From aliexpress, a dev-board with wifi and BLE is less than $5 inc tax, only $15 minimum spend for free delivery.

              esp01 module is under $2.

      • I think it might be better for blind people. I guess they cannot use smartphones. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

        • +4

They can, there's modes that use audio to tell you what's on the screen

        • +4

Many blind people use iPhones with voice control and Siri turned on.

More likely to get weird looks and be ignored for referring to da streetz

      • It MIGHT push you to become more 'social' by asking randoms for random stuff that they wouldn't be able to do anymore (like check out GOogle Maps for directions)… but it is definitely asking for trouble and weird looks in modern times. I can imagine just flat out getting ignored as if i am trying to sell something

    • -1

you all neg voting me is funny as you will never want to actually use an old Nokia, I had the old original 8210 and it was not bad at the time but lets be honest, it was crap and quite fragile…..

      • What IS funny, is that you seem to think that these are old Nokias, and that they are built to the same standard as the originals eg the 8210 was released in 1999.

    Where is the Nokia banana?

Unfortunately, time has not been kind to it, and it’s been stripped of its appeal

Waiting for Nokia to re-release the N95. That was the bomb.

    • Yes!
I thought I was the bomb walking around connecting to people's open wifi to get free internet…

    • N95 still works, just needs a wifi hotspot, and the built-in VoIP client :-)

      • So does mine. Couldn't let myself part with it.

    • N95, small touchscreen and make sure it can stream/download music and do messaging. Doesn't need anything more fancy than that for me to consider it as a backup device for occasional use. Be great form factor for an enthusiast mp3 player.

  • (nano-SIM + nano-SIM/micro-SD) vs (nano-SIM + nano-SIM)

Does that mean you can put 2 physical nanosim into either phone? Good for holiday travel?

    • Yes.

    • +4

Yea but one aim will occupy the sd card slot so where will you store all your 0.3MP photos?

      • I like to buy another as a dedicated camera

        • +4

Maybe get 4 glue them so you can get 360 degree panoramic photos

I flat out refuse to use a mobile phone that can be carried in anything smaller than a suit case

  • +3
    • Beam me up, Scotty

  • +6

Damn I remember I had an 8210 back in high school in the early 2000s. The phone was tiny!

    • +3

I remember it cost around $1000 new at the time, most people got them on a plan.

      • That's actually true

And with inflation, a $2000 iPhone doesn't seem too nuts compared to what the old Nokia were and cost

    • +2

Back when the smaller your phone was the cooler it was, yet we somehow managed to not lose them all the time either.

  • +25

Found my 3310 in the garage… still has 5% battery left :)

    • +5

Damn only 5% left, better plan to charge it in the next few months or you'll get down to 4%!

      • Or… to turn off the flashlight…

  • Can the 110 be used for data hotspot?

    • According to reviews I've seen, neither the 110 nor 8210 can provide mobile hotspot. I did not look at reviews for 2660 and do not know about that one.

      • +4

I have a 2660 Flip and it does not have a hotspot function. All of these Nokia phones run the S30+ OS, which does not support hotspot. Furthermore, the chipsets used in these phones do not have a WiFi radio module. So you cannot even connect to a WiFi network, let alone create a hotspot.

If you want a Nokia feature phone that can provide a hotspot, you need one that runs KaiOS: https://www.kaiostech.com/explore/devices/

  • These go on sale every couple months, not “been a while”

    • +6

Yep a couple of months is a while.

  • +3

I really want one but I can't think of a reason to justify buying one

    • +1

Do you have a kid that could benefit carrying a phone but you don't want them getting addicted to it?

  • +5

Glad they still manufacture these. My 80yr old dad uses these feature phones, he can’t get his head around smart phones. Also I plan on my kids getting these when they’re big enough. Can’t zombie out on YouTube or TT with these but they can phone home.

    • +2

Your kids will zombie out on YT on their school ipads eventually ;)

      • +1

Grade 3 is the plan my daughters school :(

  • +1

Perfec phones to give to kids so they just have this for making phone calls and not spending time glued to their phones looking at social media right? 😅

    But where’s the Nokia 3310/5110? 😂

    • +7

Was at the shops today. Saw a baby in a stroller and Infront of him was an iPad hanging above him playing a video. The new generation is going to be so screwed.

      • +1
      • +1

Yeah I try to limit the amount of phone times to my little kids, and only give them when I’m desperate. Screen time on a small phone isn’t good for them if you ask me and yeah all that exposure on their eyes.

Not to sound old school but I’m so glad I didn’t grow up with phones until maybe towards end high school. Just go out be a kid and play with other kids and learn to interact etc

      • Was at the shops today. saw a grown man walking down the street with a Quest 3 VR headset on.

(I'm joking but because the latest Quest 3 has pass through vision allowing you to see everything around you while wearing it, people are actually doing this)

  • I'm looking for Nokia 800

  • -1

I wish I had a time machine to show what phones in the future will be like

  • Is this as tough as it once was that you can hammer a nail?

    • +3

Only if you're careful with it, otherwise you'll break the nail.

  • Does these have volte? Will they be redundant in a month time?

    • They do have VoLTE so will be useful after 3G Network shutdown

  • need something like this but was the phone to last longer and have a better loud speaker.
Nokia 8210 seems to not work sometimes when you pick up calls and have to restart the phone.

  • Are they still weapons of destruction. Is it strong enough to break a break wall when thrown at it .. if not it's lost it's appeal

  • Flip phone with a button to call a preset emergency number (up to 5 numbers can be programmed for the one button). The 2660 Flip looks like a good option for elderly family members. I just wish they had made the answer call icon green and the hang up call button red.
