I don't recall it being this cheap before, just 25c per 100mL. We use this for cooking now, virtually smokeless unless you like a ridiculously hot pan. I can even spray it on the bbq while it's lit with no flare ups.

Other half price specials from the same catalogue

Product Price

  • thanks good post

  • Thanks. olive oil is very overrated.

    • +3

sounds like you've not tried real olive oil…

      • +3

Olive oil is great for salads but its low smokepoint makes it distinctly inferior to rice bran oil for frying/deep frying. I also find olive oil overpowering in emulsions; I prefer grapeseed oil for mayonnaise, for example.

        • +2

i only ever use it for salads and for cooking, only light frying… never deep frying and never for asian foods as the flavour is too strong. but 90% of our oil use is cold pressed extra virgin olive oil (usually from Crete), the other 10% would be canola oil.

if you want a good olive oil, find a good Greek deli, never from a supermarket…

  • rice bran vs refined olive oil for stir fry?
seems both have benefits and I can't judge what is better for me?

    • There's plenty of info out there to help you decide, I did a lot of reading before switching and haven't been disappointed.

One definite benefit, when it's on special, it's a while lot cheaper that's for sure.

    • +1

Not sure about olive oil, but generally modified/refined oils tend to become unstable when heated and produce free radicals. Rice bran oil is better at remaining stable when heated. It's one of the reasons why you shouldn't really fry with olive oil. +1 on the deal for me, this is cheap.

      • I'm sure there's negative reviews out there about rice bran oil and a million reasons not to use it but from all the reading I did it certainly seemed to come up trumps over the alternatives.

At the time I was looking into it, I wasn't aware of the price difference either, I mistakenly assumed that because it seemed better, it would be more expensive. It's nice to be wrong sometimes :)

      • +1

olive oil is for salads and light cooking, definitely not for deep frying…

"but generally modified/refined oils tend to become unstable when heated and produce free radicals."

GMO becomes unstable when heated? I'd like to see some evidence of that, because on the surface it sounds pretty whacky…

        • +6

          He wrote "generally" not "genetically"…

  • +1

really, 25c per mL? r u serious? that $250 per liter. bloody expensive i say.

might want to check that maths.

    More like $2.5 per L

    • Missed the 100 when flicking between tabs and transcribing the info, fixed.

  • Not sure if this is nationwide but at the moment, Coles Garden City WA is selling a brand of 5L extra virgin olive oil for $20 (half price from $40). Tasted pretty good when I used it as a bread dip last night.

    • my store has it for $18.

      • I saw it in one store the other day for $12.99…Sole Mio brand IIRC…I wasn't quite brave enough to try it! ;)

  • Thanks for the heads up foobar, we bought some of these many months back when they had a deal running on the 500ml bottles. They didn't last long, we all liked it here. Glad to see it's back and in volume this time, will pick some up soon!

  • Awesome find have been waiting for this to come up on special again for ages - ended up biting the bullet last week and bought one full price. Time to stock up. :)

    • Got the receipt from last week? Buy an extra one, take a full unopened one back with the receipt where you paid full price and get your money back, tell them you bought it by mistake, thought it was olive oil ;)

      • lol yeah, no, got it then because we desperately needed it.

Does anyone else get frustrated by the lack of "half price deals" that are presented by the large chains for healthy foods?

I mean, have a quick look at the promos- generally speaking, its chocolate, coke, chips, cordial, cabanossi, raisin toast, tim tams, arnotts snack biscuits (like shapes, etc) Allens lollies, and you can go on and on. Eating healthy costs an absolute bomb.
I find it really frustrating that when you walk the isles of the supermarkets all the cheap trolley fillers are just utter crap that is killing us and making us fat.

Where are the half price deals on rye bread, organic dried fruit & nuts, healthy flours, and other unprocessed foods?
Hardly ever to be seen. I often look at the front page of the coles/woolies catalogues, where their 'best' specials are pictured. I generally find that if I bought all those products, and ate them regularly, I'd be sick as a dog all the time with no immune system and about the size of a house.
Am I alone in these thoughts?

    • No not alone, noticed nearly all of it was junk food while typing it up. My main interest was the oil, the rest was just informational for anyone who happened to be interested.

Out of all of it, the only thing I'll be getting is the oil (as much as I would love some of the other).

    • +1

Maybe the margins are thinner on those items (which I assume are more costly to produce)? And/or maybe they realise that people are willing to pay more for these organic/healthy alternatives and it wouldn't make a lot of sense, business-wise, to discount them?

      • I get what you are saying, and you would be right. Its just sad, thats all. Why are the healthy options considered 'alternatives' as you said? Why isn't all the other JUNK (thats ALWAYS on sale) what we treat ourselves with OCCASIONALLY, with the bulk of our diet made up of food that is healthy, less processed, contains less additives and less preserving agents?

That would have to bring the cost of healthy foods down!

For eg: Coles loaf of processed, sugary white bread: 0.99c (fills you for two seconds then is converted straight to sugar by the body)
Loaf of rye bread, containing little or no wheat and other crap: $6.50

Im not trying to change the world, just venting frustration.

Thanks to the OP for the rice bran oil deal. Its great! Just wish there was more deals like it.

    • Before you typed this you could have looked at all of coles EDIBLE half price specials bar the corn thins, all junk. Might have answered your question. And they say we have an obesity problem here…

    • Where are the half price deals on rye bread, organic dried fruit & nuts, healthy flours, and other unprocessed foods?

You seem to have mistaken Coolies for sellers of healthy food. Try your fruito, produce markets, bakery, etc. :)

      • Thats just my point:
'Try your fruito, produce markets, bakery, etc' DONT ever have half price sales. You simply don't see unprocessed food very often at all for 59% off, etc, like you do with oreo's and smiths chips.

        • That probably tells you something about the quality of the ingredients in processed food. They are cheap because they are formulated to not go bad quickly, taste and nutrition can all go to hell, it's all about making the cheapest stuff that will sell. People eat this junk and don't feel like they've really had food so they eat some more. Result: health problems.

Rice bran oil has the highest saturated fat content out of any other oil. It has approximately 3x the amount of saturated fat in Canola oil. So I wouldn't be too fast to buy it if you like to eat chips/chocolate and what not.

    • That's incorrect. Palm oil has the highest saturated fat content for a vegetable oil. Also animal fats like lard have even higher saturated fat content.

      • OK, I was wrong, out of about 15 different types of oil. Rice bran is the worst. However palm oil is worse.

Let's be realistic here. Who uses palm oil, let alone animal fats in their daily cooking? This isn't the 1960's. But anyway….just want to let others know about the high saturated fat content.

  • -3

Thank you foobar, Rice Bran Oil is good for me. Indecent, Saturated fat is not bad for you it is balance that matters. Lack of saturated fats leads to all kinds of things like diabetes etc. So you will need to buy a lump of lard (say clarified butter or Jerky) to even things out. Wow that burns! wow that burns! Blazinn Saddle! wow that burns!

    • +1

So you will need to buy a lump of lard (say clarified butter or Jerky) to even things out.

Dafuq??? I dunno where you're getting your jerky wongster; but last time I checked, the lean beef used for jerky has bugger-all fat in it…certainly nothing like ghee!

  • awesome! been using it for years, always stock it up when they are on sale :p

  • I think I'll leave it 'til Monday to help spend my $100 for the week.
