What this does do? Home for birds?

    • +18

Unironically, this allows me to ask it questions and it Googles it for me and shares the result

      • +4

Ok Google. What does this do?

        • Exactly! Sadly this service is only in-person audio, and Dark Zeus isn't yet able to use this ability to search things online

      • +23

What a normal sentence that is.

      • +2

While I agree with you, this is a strange platform to air your POV.

    • +2

I often hear birdsong coming from my nest mini, so this is the most likely conclusion

      • If you ask it to "play forest noises", the ambient loop does include lots of bird noises. Great ambient or white noise machines.

    • +1

When I had this connected I'd have ads on my phone about anything I'd say nearby it, like if I talked about buying new shoes ads would come accordingly.

  • +1

    Must be very old stock.

  • +5

I still have 2 unopened Google Home mini which I got for $3 each from Oz Bargain a few years ago

Use it to cast music from my phone in bathroom
I am surprised the device is still working well after years.

    • +24

Wow, its crazy that you can cast to them when they're still unopened in the box?!?!?!

      • +2

Maybe keeping them in the box is the secret to their longevity!

  • hahah I have this at home came free for some phone years ago with telstra. I never use this.

    • +24

I don't know how you can't find a use for it. I use it to turn on my aircon, my fans, my lights, TV, Spotify, set reminders, set timers, ask the weather… The list goes on

        • +5

great - go use your useless systems

          • -4

@ChatCPT: apple home pods aren't useless less since they tie in to just as many homekit devices as a google home world the difference is that is works well with all apple devices. Google minis do not.

Thanks, price matched 2 with JB

  • now out of stk kids!

  • Thanks Uncle R!

But all them Karen's already rushed to Gerry's toy stores and the HVN stock price is up!!

  • +2

Beware if you are going to use it as a bluetooth speaker as mine constantly dropping connection

  • +2

It seems no one can sell their stock of google smart devices since the assistant has been broken for the last year or so. My devices have turned from used multiple times a day to glorified speaker now days.

    • +2

      How is it broken?

      • +4

for example you would see adverts showing someone asking it to tell them a joke. My daughter loved that, until for 6 months straight it just told the same joke every time.
All the requests to activate devices are hit and miss now, either it cant find the device or it says ok and nothing happens. Trying to get something to play from netflix or something is messy, often picking some random artist on spotify or a random youtube video. Even small things like setting timers and reminders seem broken. So we basically dont bother and use our phones manually do the task.

Lately we have even been getting random "Hey did you know blah blah blah" with out actually interacting with it. but I think thats because we dont use it as much and its their way of reminding us its still there.

Theres lots of posts online about the google eco system basically being dead.

        • +2

agreed, I use these speakers to voice control my smart light and other IoT, Google Nest was much slower than Amazon Echo back in when it still works, and now when I ask google to turn on the light, it'll sit there wait for a minute and reply hmmmm. something went wrong..

        • +1

is this just with the nest minis?

I have a nest audio and nest mini and haven't really noticed any difference controlling my lights or activating routines

I just bought another two to add to the living room speaker group

          • +2

@retort: Whole ecosystem sadly. But if your setup is still working then happy days, but it's definitely stopped me getting any more of their products

        • +1

Just asked my mini to tell me a joke 4 times in a row. I got 4 different jokes. Most were xmas-themed too.

  • +1

Works very well just as a wireless chime for Nest Doorbell, that's really all I use it for

  • +8

grab a few and place them around the house or apartment
create a speaker group in the Google Home app and you have a pretty cost effective surround sound setup
got about 6 of these and they work great - just note music can only be cast if you have a Spotify account (or YT/Apple music)

    • +1

Today I learned about speaker groups! Thanks :)

  • +3

Charcoal still in stock for those interested

    • Thanks grabbed a charcoal

  • -8

Paying to be spyed on, I'll pass

    • +11

thanks for letting us know that you will be passing, we were all eagerly awaiting your opinion

      • -2

But he does have a point?

        • +1

To those that think it's a valuable point, maybe. The rest of us, not so much…
If they are big enough to pass on their insightful opinion to a public forum, then they should be big enough to handle equally valid responses, like the one made by telf22.

        • +1

yes, if you don't have social media & a mobile phone & you don't go outside where there are CCTV everywhere then you should be worried about this spying on you.

          • -1

@furyou: Cool, may as well just stick a live webcam up in the bathroom then.

            • +2

@Bdawg: How did you know I have that?

        • +1

are you actually worth spying on though?
the self importance levels is incredible

  • +7

I find the functionality of these is getting worse and worse, I am guessing they stopped maintaining Assistant properly as they are coming out with Assistant with Bard soon.

I wonder if they will make all these devices redundant when Assistant with Bard comes out, and they will force us all to buy new devices. Even though the processing is probably done over the web…

    • The general issue is the same as AIs - how do you make money out of them?

You aren't going to get away with charging a subscription, the number of people using it to subscribe to a music service isn't sustaining, and if you did to these what they have done to youtube with ads, they would rapidly get unplugged.

They were pushed with the idea there was potential to get money back, somehow, to fund the servers - but it hasn't turned out that way.

      • +1

I thought they make money by monitoring our conversations 24/7 for keywords they can use for advertisements.

    • By the time Bard is useable, this may have paid itself many times over. That is assuming Bard will not join deadbygoogle after 5 years.

      • +1

I feel you are just paying $18 to get angry. At least 30% of the time mine does the wrong thing and it's quite frustrating. Considered getting rid of them but I keep them for the music, even though they usually play the wrong song haha.

  • +1

I don't know if I did anything special but bought two of these through officeworks and it came with free 2 hour delivery (vic).

    • +1

Same for me. Though I also have OnePass.

  • +1

Do ppl find these ones handy for kid rooms and good ‘lock down’ functionalities for things you don’t want them to do with it at certain times?

    • +2

If you create accounts for the kids, you can then set downtime. I set it for 24 hours a day. Unfortunately, my son learned to disguise his voice and it now thinks I'm him. It's merged our voices and now I'll often be locked out myself.

    • +1

I use them in the kids' bedroom to play white noise sounds to help them sleep. Also great for playing beach or sea sounds to mask a sleeping/snoring partner in the bedroom

  • Thanks OP got 2. ..with free 2-hr delivery whoo hoo. …not that I was in a hurry or anything LOL.

  • +6

Hey Google, which is the most disliked retailer in OzBargain?
According to a recent survey, it appears the unscrupulous Harvey Norman was overwhelmingly voted as the worst retailer and won by a strong majority!

    • Would you like to know more?
      "No"
Check the link in your Google Assistant app.

  • i find them nice to have. We use ours around the house like an intercom. I also rely on them when i am out and my wife doesn't have her phone on her so i'd "Broadcast" my message and she'd give me a bell. Also handy for our 2 young ones. In the morning they make their bed and dress themselves so you'd often hear them asking for the forecast, playing music, or asking for jokes.

    • hmm so when we are out using 4G on mobile, we can still connect to our nest at home? im confuse

      • Yes through Google assistant. You can’t pull up GA as easily on an iPhone so I have the app and set up to launch via triple tap on the back

  • +2

Picked up 2 from OW with their free 2 hour delivery promo going on now.
I personally have not had any issues with my Google devices in my house. I use a nest hub max in my kitchen for all sorts of things and I was looking for a couple more minis to put in my office and my sons room. We use them for music, turning on all our smart devices, broadcasting across the house etc. I've found them very handy to have.

    • Does it still only just does "annoucements"? Or has google updated it to do "drop-ins" and calls like amazon echo?

  • +2

Thanks OP, bought it via Officeworks and their free 2 hour delivery!

    • my order kept getting cancelled and refunded. not sure why

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel and refund your order # 100xxxxxxxx as it did not meet our customer privacy and security standards when shopping with Officeworks.

      • Maybe try a different OW store?

        • hmm,..ok, will do

  • +1

All rooms in house have these running, love playing music in sync on all at once. Guess I need one for garage

    • Good price enough to start my whole home audio system :)

  • +2

Crazy price. Snagged one more for the last room in my house that doesn't have one.

  • Used to be great, but somehow voice recognition has got ten significantly worse over the last few years. OK to use as cheap speaker, but very frustrating to use as assistant.

  • Excellent Christmas stuffer

  • I say this every time a deal comes up, but can recommend getting two and setting them up as a stereo pair, pretty decent sound when paired, ideal for bedroom etc. and nice and compact for bedside table (one on each side of bed).

    • Can I use it as my PC speaker?

      • Yes as a Bluetooth speaker from memory

      • Yep, should be able to with bluetooth and the delay is virtually unnoticeable on bluetooth 5.0. Apparently 5.0 latency is about 40ms provided your PC supports it although thats just the spec, not sure if it translate to real world. I do know I can watch videos from my phone and no noticable audio delay.

  • Echo is already at 5th gen. What Google has been doing?

  • I use mine for broadcast to call kids down for dinner. It's very broken half the time it doesn't broadcast the other half it cuts off halfway.
Also for things like how's the weather, in the last two years it started saying "Tomorrow at ___, it's " and then silence. Ask it a few more times and eventually it gets the whole sentence out

    • Yeah except broadcast only works under English language…. It's not a true intercom where it will just relay what you said. What a shame. If you speak anything else it becomes jibberish

It is not smart enough to detect what language you speak and then broadcast

      • I'm speaking English it's just completely broken lately.

have one still sealed lol since before covid

  • Is it possible to have these speakers play the same audio and keep in sync?
I tried to play music throughout my house but there was no way I could spot to do this, tried adding the speakers to a group and play to that, but didnt work.

Best solution I found was to cast audio from my phone to each speaker individually, but they would not be in sync.

    • +1

Mine keep in sync when doing this across the house, but they also have an option in the home app to adjust the audio delay which should in theory allow you to sync them if having issues.

    • +2

Yep, just create a speaker group in the google home app and add each speaker to this group. You can then cast to the group.

      • +1

Sweet, I'll give it another go.
It could have something to do with me using YouTube vanced as well 😂

  • Cheers. Cheaper than second hand

    • Yeah and save much time and effort

  • Thanks, OP. I have a $26 bonus e-gift, and I had no idea what to buy. So, I ended up purchasing 2 lol

i am wondering can i use this a speaker/mic for WFH setup for meetings and listening to youtube from laptop.
what steps are needed? do i need to login my google account to laptop browser?

does it has bluetooth so i can just connect to laptop as standalone speaker/mic?

  • Just received mine. Can't image the 2 hours delivery in the future either by a drone or a self-driving car.

  • I was thinking of getting one of these for the Google assistant functionality, but there's a lot of negative comments here about that. Any alternative recommendations? Echo dot perhaps?

    • I have both, still prefer this one. I bought another one with this promo. I feel the echo is only good for notifying of amazon deliveries.

I’ve been using them to turn on/off devices, manual and automated, and to play music… so far they’re great. With the music is esp very convenient I use it all the time now, neglecting my bluetooth speakers.

There are some minor issues there and there. For one if you use iOS this device doesn’t like that so I normally encounter some problems with the set up.
