Best Size for 1st Time Air Fryer Purchaser

Hi There,

Im thinking about buying the wife a air fryer. Have noticed the Target Brooklyn ones are cheap at the moment.

Im not sure if we would fully use it but might as well try it out.

Whats the best size from the following selection -

Brooklyn 4.5L $25 https://www.target.com.au/p/brooklyn-4-5l-digital-air-fryer-…
Brooklyn 5.5L $48 https://www.target.com.au/p/brooklyn-5-5l-digital-air-fryer-…
Brooklyn 8L $62 https://www.target.com.au/p/brooklyn-8l-digital-air-fryer/67…

Tempted to get the smaller 4.5L but not sure if its too small ? I have a family of 4. 4.5L might be good for holiday house though.

So whats the best size or doesn't it really matter ? and are these units okay or am I better off checking out a proper brand like Phillips or Tefal ? Given that I dont know if I would fully use it besides making chips I guess.

  • Slightly bigger is better so you can fit things like pizza slices, but not too big as it takes longer to heat up. I'd choose the middle size.

buying the wife a air fryer.

    Size counts…

  • I have a cheapo 8L from Kmart and found it to be a good size, having needed more space on very few occasions and can't imagine going smaller.

  • I have a discontinued Kmart one (3.2L, I think) and it's great for me and 2 children! I've ordered the $25 4.5L for my ex (Christmas gift from our kids)
Depends what you're cooking, chips or spring rolls can be piled up and give them a shake once or twice, burger patties or croissants I like to have 1 layer so you might want more area. I thought about getting the 2 drawer style so I could do meat in one and vegetarian in the other at the same time.

    Bigger is better.

Kmart has an airfryer that is insanely highly rated and doubles as an oven too

25L Air Fryer and Oven - Silver $139

I have something similar from sunbeam I got at a massive discount but otherwise I would get the kmart one.

  • I have the Phillips XXL one and I wish it were bigger. It’s 7.2L

  • Size would depend on the waist size or waste size.

  • Got one with 2 buckets instead of one - helps save some time by being able to cook two things at once on different settings

  • Is there any advantage in getting a better named brand one like Ninja AF160 Air Fryer Max at @139 ? I think I've read in the past that it's one of the favourites due to no teflon used in basket ? Brooklyn is Russel Hobbs brand I guess, wondering if the coating on the basket would just flake off on the cheap one.

  • My 2 cents:

I started with an Aldi one (~4L), the coating in the basket indeed flaked off. I also found it too small. It only fits a small chicken. Even a couple of slices of toast did not fit (when the toaster broke). It was also hard to cook two things at the same time. So, yes, size matters with air fryers.

I considered a 2 bucket version, but thought it would just be two too small buckets.

I have since a couple of weeks upgraded to the Germanica GAF9PLUSW 9L Air Fryer. I love the size it so far fit everything. I also bought 2Pcs Air Fryer Silicone Liner 8" for when I want to fry two things. Plus I bought an Air Fryer Silicone Pot (for $5.99 it is the cheapest price I found). These keep the air fryer clean.

    • Your Germanica unit looks exactly the same as 8L Target Brooklyn one. any signs of flaking on the Germanica ? Thanks for the liners. I'll research into that.

      • Yes, it looks very similar/same. There are a couple of brands I found which look like the Germanica. Or at least have the same display.
What I also like is the window and the light.
I only bought it early November, so no flaking yet. However, because I do everything in the liners it has not become greasy or needed a scrub so that will help too. The liners are very easy to clean.

  • Was given a 6(ish)L one 3mths ago, looks like most basket styles on the market now. I have also been looking at the large oven styles too.

It is tall and round, bulky, restrictive basket design, requires liners, coatings are flaking, a bugger to keep spotlessly clean, switch/lock is hit n' miss, heavy and awkward to store, presets are rubbish, and take 4 x as long as own 'current' oven.

But unless there is a 35+l full oven style becoming available with more emphasis on the fan forced… I shall stick to our very efficient and more useful Convection/Microwave. Eg, Airfryer 50min for crispy crumbed chook, v 2min micro + 10min Convection = same result.

These things are just a smaller version of those glass body Turbo jobbies that were a fad a while back. They have a place I am sure, but unless you really need one and have the space…. pass. This Airfryer will be gifted away again.

Perhaps give your wife a gift to cherish, not just another kitchen tool.

But afterward sif you must, buy the cheapest thing you can, learn to use it, and then choose if a decent one is for the kitchen or not. It appears quality and accessories cost.

    Or not.

    • thats the problem, wife is asking for one..

If that is the case, the biggest and the best Santa can manage.

        • In that regard Santa would probably need to grant the original request of a Ninja Foodi Airfryer Deluxe AF160. Im sure if I get a cheaper one wife wont be too impressed :P
