    Great router, great price.
    Good find OP.

    • I haven't come across the iOS problem. What is it?

      • Neither have I. This doesn’t justify a neg.

I'd say this is a you problem unless you can provide specifics.

I don't know why you're getting downvoted, the AX86U WiFi dropoff issue has been known for years now across multiple firmware version, just check the SNBForum thread for it. ASUS refuses to acknowledge it, but will subtly give you a replacement if you hassle them about it. Its some combination of bad QC and firmware bug

I got one at the start of the year, and when it work its great. But every once in a while it'd shit the bed and drop off the 5ghz band completely, needing a full reboot to fix. I'm also stuck on the 386 firmware, as the 388 branch cause it to drop off every couple of minutes (wifi still up, but no packet goes through, Ethernet is fine).

      • I, along with several people I know have never had a problem with iOS devices. Granted, this is NOT the Pro model so I don’t know if that makes a difference.

        • The iOS compatibility issue was also brought up a lot on SNB, a quick google search has a lot of reddit results too, often in the same threads complaining about dropouts, but I don't own any Apple devices so I can't confirm for myself. But I'm on my 2nd AX86U and its still experiencing the same issue as my first one. Its permanently on the last 386-branch firmware because its the most stable one, but even then I'd have random 5ghz dropout that needs a full power cycle to fix. The same issue was also reported on other AX models, just not as common since the AX86U is the most popular of the line.

The Pro is a GT-AX6000 in a AX86U shell, and that doesn't have many reports, though it doesn't really have much discussion on it altogether, good or bad. People who were burnt by the AX86U weren't likely going to buy another ASUS device.

Its a good router when it works, but with the issues I can't recommend it either.

  • this or Google wifi pro?

    • This without a second thought. Google routers are known to have software problems.

    • Also considering these 2 options (Or even the Asus Zenwifi XD6 on sale).
A mesh network is more of a nice to have for me, not a necessity, but I'm throwing up value propositions of a multi device mesh system for around the same price as a single router.
Also considering whether I just run Ethernet cables through the roof and install wall ports around the house, but that's obviously less flexible than wifi.

  • Glad I bought the non Pro version (RT-AX86U) before this new norm of higher prices was established.

Thing that attracted me to the Pro is VLAN support - something that should have become the norm long ago in this age of IoT, but for consumer routers has only been officially implemented in the GUI on Synology or some ASUS models (be pleased to hear if there are more). Guest network can sometimes be an adequate substitute, but is more limited and doesn't apply to the physical ports.

  • This is back in stock. Tried to post as a new deal but wouldn't let me as this post existed.

    • You are allowed to repost it. Did you tick the it's not a duplicate button?

      • haha just did that and it got removed by mods for being a duplicate

        • Thanks for the duplicate post though. If not then I wouldn't have noticed it is back in stock. Planning to upgrade to FTTP this month and this can't be a better time for me to upgrade the router as well.

  • Back in stock at $399

    • Still a bit steep $299 would be a bargain

      • I don’t think it would drop to $299. Maybe when it’s near EOL.

        • Yeah I guess I will just stay on RT-AC86U then. It's not like I got Gigabit Ethernet at home nor the NBN 1000 is affordable for the average joe

          • @neonlight: Maybe wait for Wifi7 to become popular (may take a few years) and these Wifi6 routers will become cheaper.
I agree, the price of NBN1000 is just criminal. I thought NBN fibre prices would become more affordable as they complete rolling out but it’s not.

            • @FrugalNotStingy: Yeah agreed. Thanks for the tip.
I checked back in 2020 I got Asus RT-AC86U for $287 so Max I would pay for this $299

            • @FrugalNotStingy: Got my second hand Asus RT-AC86U as AiMesh node replacing RT-AC68U.

2.4ghz gave double the download/upload speed.

5Ghz small improvement but the range has been fixed. RT-AC68U had poor 5Ghz range

Since my place is not cabled I tried using EOP 200Mbps one but it doesn't work well for AiMesh node backhand it detects as 10/100Mbps even with Cat 6 cables

I have NBN 100/20 and unlikely I will change. 1000Mbps is such a ripoff

And yes I think I should wait for Wifi 7 I'm fine to run Wifi 5 for now.

The whole Asus AiMesh set up would need to be replaced

              • @neonlight: Yeah, if you don’t have a lot of devices connected to the network, a 1Gbps NBN plan or NAS, then wifi 6 is unnecessary. A well set up and equipped Wifi 5 network can be faster than a wifi 6 network.

I also recommend to skip Wifi 6e altogether as it is short range and half baked.
Wait until NBN 1000 to get cheaper if you don’t need the speed now while waiting Wifi 7 clients and routers to become common in a couple of years time then get a Wifi 7 router for the cheap. If Wifi 7 routers stays expensive then get a faster router without all the bells and whistles and consider cabling your home.
