M3 MBP 16 with similar config starts at $4299

personally I see no reason to pay more for M3, this looks like the cheapest you can get a brand new MBP 16 with apple silicon right now

even buying exact same model from Apple refurbished will cost you $100 more (but you could get discounted Apple gift cards)

BTW a bunch of MBP models of M1 generation were dropped to Apple Refurbished store yesterday afternoon, quite a few gone already, but few interesting options remain.

  • wish they had silver

    • +1

being new to apple macbooks I picked up and molested every color and finish in store, and I find Space Grey best middle ground. but I can see how others can get attracted to silver finish

      • +2

Silver is more durable. The other colours are an anodised coating on top of the silver, so scratches are much more visible…

        • +2

according to some articles, "Space Gray MacBook tends to have better performance than Silver MacBook." due to better heat dissipation.

and they daresay RGB have no impact on computer performance! just kidding.

I find silver too bright and distracting. I am usually super careful with my tech, so should be fine. but yes silver sounds like the way to go for those who want more durable finish

          • @shabaka: I’m extremely careful with my devices too, but I had a space gray MBP once and it did get scratched easily, really visible, and being a pedantic it’s silver all the way for me (and I like the look and don’t find it distracting).

I’ve had about 15 MBP’s at this point and they’ve all been sold onwards in perfect condition if that matters.

Edit: Also, LOL at performance quotes.

            • @xdirex: hmmm that gets me thinking

sadly those mbp 14 with 16/1tb are gone now, whatever colour it is

being pedantic too I might cancel the gray one then.. and go with 16/512 instead? or maybe wait for a better deal

16GB RAM Overkill BTW and other such comments

    • +12

Need 8GB RAM to generate more comments

      • +3

I would never post an 8GB option, as I am personally not convinced it's a good choice in macs. yeah you can get by with 8GB if all you do is browse web, watch netflix, type some emails - you'll be fine. I had base model M1 Air for a month, it's a super solid machine if that's all you do - but if you start editing photos on it, things go downhill quite quickly there

if you get macbook for creative work, get at least 16gb

    • yeah but I don't think MBP 16 exists with less than 16gb. people buy these guys for the screen real estate (which is gorgeous) and extra processing power (which is not much of extra in this model), so people who want this you know who you are

Apple still has refurb stock of MBP 14 with M1 Pro with 16/512 for $2299 so if you don't need 16" display and want something smaller, that's the best bet ATM. still mini LED, ProMotion, and 6 speakers sound system, same set of ports, just different form factor.

    • woah someone got quite disappointed with OzBargain and deleted their account it seems. sorry! I didn't mean to upset anyone

you can get the MBP 14 inch M1 pro brand new with 1tb SSD and 16gb ram for 2800 at HN

    • +2

correct. but it's Gerry, and MBP 14. this deal is for MBP 16

also those (MBP 14 16/1tb) were $2539 at Apple refurbished yesterday. I grabbed one. I don't need MBP 16, 14 will do me just fine

      • Hmm, 14" 1TB 16GB is $2,769 refurbished today, what was the spec on yours? The one there now is 10 core CPU, 14 core GPU. I am thinking of getting the 32GB one though, which is $3,339, not sure if that is a good deal or not.

        • they were gone quick. mine is same as 16/512 still available for $2299 - 8cpu/14gpu

32gb sounds great, but I am not sure if it's a good deal

        • brand new the 14" same one at HN not refurbished.

      • yes but most people don't want used devices like refurbished ones they want BRAND NEW which is what the 14 MBP is with 1TB of storage whcih is better than the 512gb on the 16gb which isn't much.

        • +1

yeah but why pay more to Gerry when Apple refurbished is indistinguishable from brand new and has same warranty?

          • @shabaka: Brand new is brand new u don’t know what issues yiur going to get with refurbs its not brand new if u like used products that someone used then thats your prerogative, but i like brand new.

            • @kungfuman: bought apple refurbished before, there's no way to tell it's been used. same warranty, too. they replace almost everything there

everything around us is made from the same atoms over and over again. come to think of it, even brand new products can be considered refurbished

but I kinds understand where you're coming from, there's so many joints out there peddling "refurbished" phones and laptops where "refurbished" just means "wiped with a cloth" but apple certified refurbished is a different story.

              • @shabaka: Again I don’t like used equipment only untouched brand new

    • But this is 16”

    • 512gb vs 2 inches. Pick your poison.

      • +4

those 2 inches also come with 600g extra weight, plus larger power brick

I found mbp 14's 1.6kg far more palatable than MBP 16's 2.2kg. yeah I carried heavier laptops on my back, but I am glad to leave those days behind

        • +1

Yea true but with the 16 you can do without an external screen. I did think of swapping my 16 I’m an engineer but can’t give up the extra real estate especially when writing code. The 16 also has much better speakers and better thermals / battery life

          • @bindok: I know, decisions decisions. I had 17 inchers before

but portability kinda won out for me, and even editing photos I can live with 14 inch without much compromise. at the same time taking it with me to a cafe or airplane is less of a chore.

each to their own. I do miss extra screen real estate at times, but no too often for it to become a show stopper.

code - I would definitely not be able to make do with a 14 inch.

    • I used to have the 14 and had to sell it in order to get the 16. I just can’t work on a small screen.
Also the 14 you mention is probably the binned version. And the 16 has better thermal dissipation which is a bonus

      • I always use my macbook pro docked to my thunderbolt dock and thunderbolt 5k display i only care abou the specs. Any real work is always done docked.

  • Anyone got this and installed windows and able to casually play PC games on it? Cyberpunk possibly?

    • I don't think apple silicone models can run windows, gaming isn't Apple's strong suite

but I don't know everything, I think there are options out there to make things work, like I saw in notebookcheck review some gaming benchmarks, so obviously ppl can run some games on it

      • You can install Parallel or Crossover for Gaming. However, the 16GB overall RAM will become a limiting factor so not recommended for gaming. Possible, but not really recommended,

        • thank you for clarifying.

would you know if cloud gaming is an option on macs? xbox cloud, or NVIDIA GeForce now or whatever

        • Yeah want to have 1 stone kill 2 birds, still love using a Mac, but right now can't play any PC games with my ancient MB pro, if latest M1 can do that will be very nice …

          • @kaikor: Yes you can definitely do cloud gaming through the browser
Also look at Game Porting Toolkit. Just came across that recently and it plays some PC games well.

            • @bonechiller: Thx, as usual, its Apple product on sale, already got ozbargained sold out!

              • @kaikor: plenty refurbished options in Apple Certified Refurbished store

    • Just play on GeForce now or Xbox game pass ultimate via cloud lol

I have the M1 Max, great laptop, although a bit too big and heavy to take with me. I nearly didn't buy it as it has 24GB RAM more than I need;-)

  • +1

Damn, that lenovo legion 7i with 13900HX and 4070 will probably smoke this. But then I agree different ecosystem etc.

    • +1

I used to be a Windows guy for years, and all my laptops were running Windows. I always thought of Apple as expensive toys

only tried Apple for laughs about a month ago when base M1 Air dropped to $1197. I installed my photo editing software which happened to be also optimized for Apple silicon, and was completely blown away: that M1 8GB toy beat my i7-1260P 64GB RAM 3050Ti laptop at everything in the same app - without breaking a sweat (there's no fan even). Apple silicon is seriously good, I thought it was all fairy tales. also screen is calibrated out of the box. and battery lasts 2 days. and premium build.

you are right, different ecosystem, different purpose. for creative workloads (performance, screens) and even at day-to-day stuff (battery life) Apple laptops beat anything Windows based. in my opinion the only reason to buy Windows laptops is for gaming. or if you have special requirements (security for instance, Azure AD, endpoint management etc.) and software that only runs on Windows.

      • +1

I know mate, I have used an m1 pro 13 before. Was blown away. But their pricing is ridicuous. Not enough ports, 1 monitor limitation and you need hacks to connect extra monitor and the windows is a better OS unless you need the integrate linux part (am not a fan of Windows linux subsystem).

        • +1

yeah Apple pricing suxx. I would never buy full price

thank god we got Apple EPP, Apple AOC and Apple Refurbished this makes appropriate configurations more reasonably priced

    • Try running ollama.ai. My M1 Max and M3 Pro spit out text around the same speed as Chat GPT. My Ryzen 9 7940HS, you need to go get a cup of coffee…. down at the shop 5KMs away, it might be finished when you get back.

      • Correct me if I a wrong, Isnt that done on the tensor cores though? what GPU do you have on your windows laptop?

        • Radeon 780M has 12 CUs (768 shaders), not too shabby for a integrated PC graphics.

          • @mostlygordon: So you are comparing a 4 to 5K laptop to a cheapo-without a dedicated GPU laptop? Not a fair comparision IMO.3600$ fetches you the 4090 laptop. Cheaper than M3 Pro and M1 Max. That would be a fair comparision.

            • @John Doh: To beat the Mac performance, the PC laptops power brick would weigh more than the Mac. I want to be able to take it with me LOL

              • @mostlygordon: Mac definitely has its advantages. Not denying it. Unless you are sitting at a cofee shop, airport and working all the time.
