  • What is the general consensus here on the TerraMaster brand?

    • Got a F2-223 running Truenas Scale. Works very well. Mainly as a nas and not a home server though. Only have Plex running on it locally. Direct streaming only as CPU lacks some power for encoding.

just buy a qnap or something don't buy unknow brands from amazon.

General consensus as far as I can tell is that the software is terrible, very much worth wiping it and running TrueNAS, the hardware you get for the price however is good value.

    • What wrong with software?
I am only using it as NAS. What kind of software are you using?

      • Its not me personally, just what seems to be what everyone is saying, I don't have one. I'm sure it will be perfectly fine for simply sharing files over a network.

    • +1

The software isn't that bad. It depends on what you're wanting to do with it I guess.

    Edit: missed the dual 2.5Gbps

    • +3

that is direct attached storage unit vs this which is a network attached storage unit

      • Any good 2.5Gbps routers?

      • +1

but I can direct attached to existing NAS so make it network attached right

  • How's Terra Photos? Looking at moving away from Google Photos. Can the TNAS mobile app detect new photos and videos and back up automatically? Also can the app free up storage for photos/videos that have been backed up?

Purchased this at the Black Friday sale as well as two 10tb hard drives. I want to run plex on it as well as backup a lot of videos that I’ve made shot in 5k.

@opti is right. The software is terrible. It’s not designed very well and the UX makes me cringe (however I’m a UX designer so I’m probably judging it too harshly). I copied everything I wanted over and it runs well. It’s a bit noisy but could be the NAS hdd’s I got (Toshiba).

One thing that has annoyed me is that I tried to play 5k footage I shot on my GoPro over plex and it can’t handle the transcoding. I don’t know if I need to play around with plex settings or the nas settings or it’s my network but I’ll spend some time over the break tinkering.

I wish I had gone with the synology but it was way more expensive and not within my budget. So far this does everything I need and I don’t need to really use the software much now that I’ve set it up. It’s just the 5K thing that’s annoying.

5K transcoding with Plex on a NAS is a hard no. If you check out Plex's NAS compatibility list you'll find most can't even handle 2K transcoding.

  • Got the 2 bay F2-223 a few weeks ago (was on sale for $319). I tried TOS for a day and it was horrible.

So I popped in a spare 16gb stick of RAM I had lying around and set it all up again on Unraid. It's now brilliant.

    • Did you install TrueNAS?

      • He said he installed Unraid?

        • Yep, Unraid. It was a toss-up between TrueNAS and Unraid, but since I didn't have my second drive ready Unraid was my pick which made it super easy for me to add my parity drive once it arrived.

          • @integriti: What is the total idle power if you run unraid ?

        • My bad, I'm new to the NAS world and thought Unraid was some variant of a RAID setup.

    • +2

That's not a NAS though. It's a DAS so it connects directly to your computer via USB-C.

      • welp, trigger happy me got it already, if I don't intend to run plex and just have extra storage on the side, it ain't too bad right?

        • +1

Yeah still perfectly fine for local storage with raid.
