Good bag (despite not being made in Australia), and best price I’ve ever seen advertised. Can get it 30% off RRP at the iconic every quarter, which can be stacked with their $75 off first spend over $350 voucher. But even then doesn’t beat this deal from the store directly.

Paid $178.50 last year. Note that it isn’t made in Australia.

    • yep, seems only some of the wallets are made in Oz

    • +1

      How paid 178
      ?

      • On sale at DFO Harbourtown SA

    • Where is it made?

$300 — "laptop bag" — instant tax claim?

    • Only for the % you use it for work purposes and extent of work items you carry

      • +2

Who’s going to buy this and say they’re not going to be using it 100% for work :P

          • +1

            @spaceflight:

It would be strange to have a briefcase that contains no personal items at all.

That doesn't sound like the correct interpretation.

If I bought a pair of work pants, is it not a 100% deduction because I keep a packet of gum in my pocket?

            • -3

              @pharcyde:

That doesn't sound like the correct interpretation.

Except it is, you should be aware of eligibility criteria before you make a deduction.

If you buy a pair of work on pants you can't deduct them just because they are pants you wear for work.
The pants need to meet certain deductibility criteria, what you put in your pockets is not part of that.

What you put in a briefcase however is part of the deductibility criteria for a briefcase

                What is the difference?

                • @pharcyde: The item you are deducting and the ATOs deductibility criteria for each

          • @spaceflight: This is incorrect. As purchase price is $300 or less, if the bag is used mainly for work purposes they can actually claim ‘just the portion used for work purposes’ as an instant deduction. Obviously they would have to apportion this correctly still.

            • +1

@dustyisdusty: I didn't notice postage was free with the deal as that would have put it over $300

              • @spaceflight: Would ATO really audit such a thing anyway?

                • @pixpotato: It's probably unlikely however they can.

Claiming this plus other deductions will also change your record keeping requirements due to your deductions being over $300.

So even if the ATO doesn't look specifically at the bag deduction you will need to make sure you have adequate records to substitute your total deductions (and if they are looking at your deductions you'll need to substitute how you use the bag only for 100% business use and never carry any personal items in it to demonstrate the deduction is valid)

                  • @spaceflight: Bro are you the ATO

                    • @pixpotato: Anyone doing a tax return should have a basic understanding of the rules around deductions and what records need to be kept so that you can correctly claim yourself or give to your accountant to claim for you.

      • What if your put your business logo on it, then it's advertising your business 100% of the time.

        • That's not what the ATO looks at to determine the deductibility of a briefcase for an individual taxpayer deduction

  • which colour will age better in the long term? brown or black?

    • +2

brown look better when weathered looking years later?

  • Damn - just short of a 16" Macbook Pro?

    • Can fit my 16" Laptop FWIW. It's a really nice bag, very happy with it

      • Cheers, got one then. Should fit snug!

      • Where is it made?

  • Thanks OP. Got a Whisky coloured one.

  • +1

    Made in China?

    • -1

oh yeah - it says it's imported.. I would have assumed it was made in Australia.

RM Williams either gets their imported products from China or SEA.

      • RM Williams either gets their imported products from China or SEA.

        That's not really true

They source globally from places like Portugal, Romania, Bangladesh and Hong Kong as well as China

        • -3

          Funny to list china twice.

          • @Supercool: That's funny because I only used the word China once

            • -2

@spaceflight: I assume you copied it from their website? The amusement for me is that HK is China, but it's being marketed as another country of origin.

I assume you copied it from their website?

                I didn't

The amusement for me is that HK is China, but it's being marketed as another country of origin.

Sorry, I used the common name "Hong Kong" because that's what most people know it as.
But yes it is called "Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China".
"Made in" labels would need to be large to fit all of that on

Luckily for manufacturing in Hong Kong, the WTO has said that goods made in Hong Kong can be labelled as "Made in Hong Kong" so those really big labels aren't needed.

  • are the overnight bags any good? 400 down from 800

  • Tempted but I only go into the office 2 days a week. Will be good to replace my backpack and add some style

  • Cheers grabbed a whiskey

  • Does anyone with this bag know if the back of the bag has a feature where it can sit over suitcase handles? a similar feature that Tumi bags have, they call it the add a bag sleeve and is a. wry handy feature.

    • +1

If you look at the photos it doesn’t appear to have this feature. At best the handles may fit over

  • I have got the messenger bag from 2020 and it was made in Italy which is still going stong. Forrest was keen to move production back to Australia when he bought the brand so they might be clearing their import stock

  • Needs matching Patagonia puffer and RMW Boots to complete the private school boy turned finance bro.

    • +2

Or engineer/project manager. Just need to make sure to tick the chino pants box.

      • Legit seems a decent option for a career engineer. I'd love to use the same bag for the next ~20 years.

  • Which job will I land if I buy these?

5x qantas points if purchased through their FF shopping site (for a few more days at least), may as well
    Probably gunna pull the trigger

    • How can I access this portal? Have looked around and haven't been able to find.

      • Just google qantas shopping.
Whenever purchasing an item I generally try to check cashback providers and if nothing on offer then check qantas shopping.
Forgot to check if a retailer was on Cashrewards once…Sleepless night over the $11 I missed saving

  • Raised a case to find where this made.
RM do not repair bags, use your local.

    • did you get an response from them?

  • Has anyone's order been posted yet?

    • +2

Yeah I received mine. Got it in black. Finish is quite nice (as you'd expect). Both the main and inner zip are a bit sticky which I'm surprised with a little but I'm planning to run a lead pencil along it a couple of times to loosen it up. It does seem to be getting better with more use of said zips.

      • Made where?

      • Think I’ll order
Was always going brown but today I’m leaning toward black
Concern would be the brown being too light

  • Ordered whiskey on 27th and havent seen any notification about it being shipped yet. Anyone else on the same boat?

    • Our 2 laptop bags came today, but 2 overnight bags still seemingly haven't shipped.

  • Good bag, but the way the shoulder strap connects to the bag is pretty poor. If you carry a bit of weight, expect it to break within a year. I bought one from the iconic and they initially only offered a $60 refund, but i convinced them to accept the return (paid $364 with some cashback on top).

Bought another one with this sale though to replace it. Just need to avoid too much weight.
