This Tom's review has the closest spec.

Not as saving as the most few recent deals, but this one comes with a more build quality comparable to the HP Envy 360 and Dell XPS, expected a more premium and business grade. The 3-year warranty is a good promise. Good to ignore their RRP I reckon.

Plus this Legion Active Gaming Backpack for $1 by asking the rep. Comment if you are offered anything else.

  • Would anyone recommend this for GIS? thanks

    • +3

Would work fine for GIS but if you're going to be doing lots of geoprocessing, I'd go for an i7 or i9 or ryzem.7 or ryzen 9. Just so your computer doesn't get completely buckled when processing. Same as for RAM.

If you're gonna be doing any photogrammetry work for example, go for 32gb ram. If not, 16gb should suffice for most things.

Source: 10 years as GIS-bloke. No longer in GIS (I left that job 3 years ago but have picked up some casual side hustle work as some over the last couple years. Primarily used ESRI's products)

        Thanks heaps

This is a super nice machine, also really great performance with either the 6650H or 6850H. Most should be perfectly happy with the 6650H.

My only two grips are the lack of options to upgrade the RAM to 32GB (which I think would be warranted with a genuinely top-end chip like the 6850H), and the 16" 1200p display, it really ought to have been 2560x1600 resolution IMHO, especially given that a 13" or 14" at 1080p/1200p is already very much usable with 100% scaling.

The materials are premium and the build quality is solid.

  • I saw this the other day, reviews sound warning that this is poorly designed and overheats at the slightest tasks

    • Some reviews with the R9 CPUs do mention the heating issue, being said that it by default won't speed up the fan much to keep quite environment which should be adjustable in setting if the case.

  • My problem is with that GPU choice. I understand this isnt a gaming rig, but using an radeon gpu for a business/productivity role machine is pretty underwhelming considering in these usecases, nvidia gpus are far better optimised for. This is one of those cases where a 3050 looks bad in a gaming lappy, but would fare far better in a bussiness rig.

  • Do models like this ever include 32gb option? How much more would it be? How much better build would this be compared to Ideapad 5 Pro 16“

    • I think they offer spec upgrade on US site but not on these deals as they are pre-built and ready to be shipped in a day or two

  • 1200p 60hz display isn't great

Radeon 6500m is about 5-10% more powerful than GTX 1650 Mobile if anyone is wondering

  • How heavy is this?

    • Under 2Kg based on the reviews

  • I have Z13. Have seen this IRL and build is similarly nice. Probably has some of the same issues:
    - very slow to turn on. Like, a minute. Shut down also slow
    - occasional battery drained in bag

      • occasional battery drained in bag

Common issue with Windows modern standby, this will affect all Windows notebooks, not just this. There are fixes online which work to varying degrees.

      • Can't believe this is still a thing in almost 2024. Had the same issues with my surface pro 4 a dell xls a decade ago. I guess it is just too difficult a problem to fix for Microsoft. Yet somehow never had a single standby issue with my Mac

        • I've had similar issues with both MacOS and Windows, though you are right that it seems more prevalent in Windows.

The various fixes online do actually practically fix the problem on both platforms, though.

          • @p1 ama: On Mac i think it must have been with Intel systems. Ive had a couple of apple arm based laptops since launch and never had an issue - being based on phone chips I guess they have standy completely sorted.

    • One minute to start or shut down the Windows on a Zen3 SSD is considered very long. My old PC could run faster than that. I think more of the heavy loaded Windows?

      • Common problem with Z13, have a look on the subreddits. I have a pretty clean install.

        • PAYG's comment below has no issue with that. Possibly on a case-by-case basis. I'd contact the support for its unexpected boot time.

          • @Bii: Perhaps it’s temperamental. In the spirit of numbers, I just timed it and a cold boot was 29 seconds, from hibernate same time. Turning off was faster, about maybe 10 seconds. So not a minute, but not fast either.

All things considered, I would still say I like the laptop, it's just that for such a modern machine I don't get why this particular model has comparatively very slow boot times.

Decent deal but the lack of upgradeable RAM is what kills it for me. If you're never going to upgrade it not an issue but I like the option.

Looking at it the only thing you could upgrade down the line is the M.2 SSD.

  • Understand it's not Apple to Apple Comparison but looking at spec, would this be a better value for money?

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-slim-series-laptops/legion-slim-5-gen-8-(14-inch-amd)/82y5cto1wwau2

Same aluminium casing and more future.proof? And possibly better heat handling being a gaming laptop? Thanks

    • The laptop you linked is $2000 dollars? It’s a lot more than what the poster Iinked above. Unless I’m missing a coupon you’re meant to use?

      • Yeah, that's why i quoted not Apple to Apple. But the spec is much better so probably better value for money? With shopback up sized it could go down to $1800 mark.

        • I think paying almost 800 dollars more is a bit of a leap, forget apples to apples you go from one class of a laptop to another. When the budget is $2k AUD I think the laptop selection changes quite a bit compared to 1.2k. That’s just my thoughts anyway. The laptop you linked is nice though it has everything with no real compromises. (Other than the price)

I have the z13 gen1 with r7, 32gn ram. I quite like it. It's very premium. a combo of a workhorse and a premium laptop. Everything works well as intended. Would have liked a USB A port would probably be the only negative I have for it. Previous users have said it takes a long time to turn on and off and it overheats. Mine isn't slow at all. few seconds to turn off and a bit longer to turn on. haven't had any issues with overheating either.

    • +1

What’s your boot time? I measured a cold boot of 29 seconds or so, same for hibernate

      • +2

        Just measured 21sec cold boot

    • Is this from when the lenovo logo appears or from when you press the power button?

A lot of people have mentioned that it takes really long time from when you press the power button until the lenovo logo appears. After which from lenovo to windows to desktop is relatively quicker.

Also I heard it is inconsistent.

      • +1

I was measuring from pressing the power button. There is a good few seconds of black screen.

        Also, definitely inconsistent.

For me it's not a huge bother, but i have had a couple of frustrating times I was in a rush and waiting for it to turn on.

      • +2

from when I press the button. just timed it again. 21secs. i didn't look at how long it took from button press to lenovo logo but i'd say around 8-9ish secs.

        • Have you done the bios update recently? It took awhile, 0.5-1 hr, when I first start, was very hot, and loud fan noise. After that, things run as normal. It's still freshly new. I haven't tested the boot time yet.

Maybe you can test the safe mode or try the chrome flex os boot from flash to compare. Desktop PC can adjust the boot delay if there's something similar with yours.
