  • Man, windows laptops are so cheap. Basically half the price of a M2 macbook air, with similar performance.

    • -5

People still buy M2 just to show-off that they got money.

      • +2

Its more what your liking is , what works for you . Apple works , my daughters macbook airs have been going strong for five years .

      • +1

        Yeah nah
MacBook will last a decade without slowing

        • +1

Windows laptop also do stay in top shape for years if maintained properly that are half the price of apple laptops.

    • +14

Well yeah similar performance but worse screen, trackpad, cooling, battery life, noise, build quality, ports, webcam, speakers

Doesn't make sense to compare it just on performance

      • +8

        but with 16GB RAM :)

        • If you double the price of this Dell you can get 16GB m2 macbooks.

          • +1

@evoconfused: Double the price is the key phrase.

            • +1

@cd-v: Well that was the discussion that macbooks offer similar performance for double the price which I don't really agree with.

              • @evoconfused: Battery life aside (as that's dependant on the onboard battery) M2 on the air should be in line with the Intel 125H.

        • 8gb RAM on a mac is different to 8gb on a PC

      • Also better warranty support, standby and sleep implementation, stability, resale value

        • +3

Depreciation and resale value rarely makes it’s way into these value arguments.
I’d estimate they only lose 15-20% per year, whereas x86 will expect to see anywhere from 20-50% depreciation per year. It’s a significant cost that really can’t be ignored.

    • different user case tho

    • +9

@cd-v - On paper, my work laptop has higher specs and cost than my M1 16gb MacBook Pro and yet it chews through more ram, worse battery life and is slow when doing simple tasks.

Apple computers in my experience run much more efficient than windows computers.

      • +1

Wait until you need to do heavy processing work on a Mac with 8GB ram.

I agree for everyday use like browsing, streaming, etc that Mac feels smooth and snappy even with smaller ram

        • +1

That's for win laptops as well, what's your point?

          • +3

@evoconfused: Nevermind, might have misread the original comment. Was just thinking about base models Macbook air and pro with 8GB ram and how Apple themselves effectively said that they are the same as 16GB ram on Windows when it's not the case at all.

            • @buddy03: @buddy03 - My partner has an M1 MacBook Air with 8Gb and it still handles basic tasks fairly well. My partner is someone that tends to not close apps or tabs as well.

Where as I find Chrome on a windows laptop just chews through many more resources when compared to safari.

I’d always recommend people go for 16gb of ram, but overall I’ve found 8gb of ram is managed better on OSX than windows. Just my limited experience with Dell and HP laptops.

Maybe a surface laptop will be a better experience, since it’s made by Microsoft.

Screen Is 300 nits.. Is this OK?

    • good enough for indoors but still not really ideal

    • +1

That's pretty crap but passable indoors, outdoors will be bad

  • Is the RAM expandable? I see two RAM options and not sure of the difference.

    • LPDDR5 is soldered, but it typically has faster speeds, 16gb is prod ably enough though

    • +1

      No, it's soldered.
If you are not sure if the difference, you don't need to spend $200 on faster RAM.
Even knowing the difference, I don't think such an amount is worth it.

      • Thanks. Actually looks like $400!

      • The ddr5 model is 1340p which isn’t core ultra and has much worse power efficiency and graphics

        • Yeah I'm on mobile, didn't notice it changed a lot of other spec's at the same time.

    • You also have to take into consideration that this laptop has slower RAM configurations vs the review laptops which will skew iGPU/CPU performance compared what a you will actually get on the shelf. Would prefer a laptop that has the same RAM as review units so I know I'm not getting a slower specification by stealth.

  • "HDMI 1.4 (Maximum resolution supported over HDMI is 1920x1080 @60Hz. No 4K/2K output) "

    This is a dealbreaker.

    Acer Swift Go R7-7840U, 16GB DDR5, 512GB SSD, R780M, 14" 2.9K OLED 400nits 90Hz $1197 + Del ($0 to Metro/C&C) @ Officeworks

With this 14th Gen Intel config, you are paying $200 more for:

    A worse screen
    A slower CPU
    Similar iGPU hardware
Worse iGPU software (Arc drivers have improved but are still behind Radeon)
And the only real plus - dual Thunderbolt 4

Unless pricing is sharp, these mid/high spec Intel laptops are not worth considering until 15th Gen when Intel finally release their TSMC matching CPU tile

    • +3

You have oled on this acer laptop and this beats the Dell easily

    • No

      https://imgur.com/a/aUwnhq5

A lot of the slower meteor lake benchmarks happen because the reviewers didn’t upgrade their opcode, meteor lake is faster and more power efficient at super low wattages when the CPU tile is off and sustained loads above 30w, granted that is the 155H but the 125H should be noticeably faster than the benchmarks listed if the opcode update is done

      • +5

        No

Find the benchmarks where the 125H in this $1.4K deal outperform the 7840U in the $1.2K Acer by at least 15% because that is the benchmark

BIOS and P-code updates, scheduler changes required in Windows and Linux, all the other edge cases in intensive multi-threaded programs such as games - these are all first gen problems that you as the customer will be beta testing buying 14th Gen

13th and 14th Gen Intel laptops are going to be dumped all throughout 2024 because Intel has plenty of marketing dollars to bribe OEM's with the new Core rebrand

Paying $1.4K now with the huge early adopter tax for a quickly plummeting 14th Gen is stupid

      • Just a reminder that this laptop allso has slower RAM speed configurations vs review laptops which will effect performance of the iGPU and CPU.

    • +2

True. Was trying to find a budget 13th gen intel i5/i7 laptops. Acer Swift Go i5-13500H with 16G/512G, 1920x1200 with 4k HDMI output is the best deal imho.

      https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/acer-swift…

Only for $997. What else do you need for that price?

      • +2

You are getting 20%+ worse multicore performance and less than 50% of the gpu compared to the core ultra 125H laptop and much much worse power efficiency

        • Yes. But $997 is justified for the product you’re buying. Saving at least $350.

        bro you missed out
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/814249
after seeing this none of these "bargains" are appetizing anymore

    • @ChatGPT how does the OLED Acer 16 inch with i5-13500H 120hz deal that you posted earlier compare to this dell?

  • +5

People got themselves into a spin over AMD's 7000 series naming conventions, and then Intel pulls this shite?

    • +1

Between this and the Evo i-level downgrades, Intel has resigned to compete via marketing department instead

  • +2

Pretty expensive for the Inspiron range

My 2018 XPS 13 died just this morning. Was a great laptop but XPS seem to be easy over priced these days. Shame.

    • My 2017 Xps 9560 is still running strong. Don’t think I’ll recycle it anytime soon. I’d rather gift it to someone growing up.

  • Waiting for Intel Ultra 9 in March.

  • Surprised that there are already sales given as Meteor lake launched only 2 weeks ago. Really big contrast with AMD where it takes months to actually have products shipping from announcement.

Though there are clearly some software issues given the massive variability in benchmarks so right now i'd go for a Ryzen 7040 series chip instead.

    • Surprised that there are already sales given as Meteor lake launched only 2 weeks ago.

Intel still has 70%+ share in x86 laptops because they spend big on OEM design and marketing

Really big contrast with AMD where it takes months to actually have products shipping from announcement.

AMD make more money selling bulk APU's to Sony, MS, Valve, Lenovo and ASUS rather than working with laptop OEM's and developing proper 7x40 designs

The fact that a B tier OEM like Acer is now the strongest AMD laptop partner says it all

    • I'm more confused now. Is the Meteor Lake better than 13th Gen i5 U and P series??

  • There's also the 10% statement credit offer on Amex (that expires 29/12/23) that should stack neatly with this, bringing the cost down to $1253 (if going the coupon route) or $1199 (if going the Cashback route).

  • Arc graphics? Which arc graphics
