    For comparison:
Gopro Hero 10 is $356 delivered @ Ryda Ebay
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/823022

Edit: Also, be mindful The Good Guys supply a GST/Tax invoice for the full price, not the code discounted price, so if you're claiming the GST back via TRS you get a bit extra back…

    • +14

      ATO has entered the chat.

      • I don't think it's anything dodgy, I believe ebay often cover the costs of the codes, or split the difference with the vender… I assume on the TGG system it appears you've paid the full price, and they pay the full GST on it …

I paid $487 for my Gopro 12, the Tax Invoice was for $547 which included ~$50 GST… ~$50 refunded through TRS, so $437 at the end of the day…

This deal would end up about $447…

Dont waste your money on gopro, Buy the action 4 or 360 x3 guys.

    • Why?

      Just curious

GoPro is a dead company - have a look at their stock price, US$3.50 today compared to over US$80 back in 2014. They've just been recycling the same formula ever since the first GoPro with basically hardly any new features. All of their other ventures have failed (remember the Karma drone), primarily because they lag behind the competition. DJI and Insta360 both have new and innovative products (e.g. drones, 360 degree cameras, gimbals and stabilisation…etc.) which have trickled down into their action cameras.

FWIW, as to the direct question of why the DJI Action 4 over the GoPro Hero 11 Black - there are plenty of reasons:

        • Larger sensor (1/1.3 vs. 1/1.9) meaning better low light performance, dynamic range, image quality…etc.
        • Better stabilisation (which I'm sure is a function of DJI's technology from their drones and gimbals)
        • Better quick release mounting system
        • No overheating issues (which the Hero 11 Black is known for)

As to the Insta360 x3, well, I think the innovative form factor alone makes this a winner.

Ultimately, as a user of all of these products, I think the only audience left of the GoPro are existing GoPro users - if you've had a good experience with GoPro, understand their systems, are used to their menus and products…etc., then go for it, but for anyone who's platform agnostic and starting out today, I wouldn't go with GoPro.

You didn't mention the main problem though, GoPros overheat and have random glitches/freezes. Not really useful if you're going to lose your footage or if it can't start because of the heat buildup.

For what it's worth, I find the footage to look a bit better under some conditions than DJI. Heaps of comparison videos on YouTube where anyone can decide what they prefer. I'd still get DJI though.

          • @CODY-19: So what were you doing with your Gopro to cause it to overheat and have glitches, just out of interest?, I'd be interested to hear about the conditions and your settings…

            • +3

@FLICKIT: i had a GoPro10, went to Vietnam recently.. longest video I took was 6mins until it shut down due to overheating.. this was on the stick, or mounted to my backpack front strap.. I basically wasted my trip because I couldnt film much… Everytime I turned it on it shutdown almost straightaway citing Overheating.. it truly is a rubbish camera, coupled with the excitement of wanting one for years only to be let down with my first unit.. never again.

              • @starwarsfreak: 6mins?.. Without a doubt you had a dodgy memory card or a stuffed camera that you should have returned for a replacement ! … For this to be true it must have been a major fault…

                Where is the camera now?

(Even if you sit a camera on a coffee table in 40.C. heat with no airflow you're likely to get 30 mins or more out of it before it shuts down due to overheating)

                • @FLICKIT: the 6mins was taken on my first day in Vietnam.. the memory card i used is a 512gb Samsung Evo Plus v30 formatted in the unit itself. Most likely i got a dud unit which is enough for me to never to get this brand again.

Of course it recorded fine in my air conditioned hotel room.

Ive been wanting one for years and to finally get one and get this experience is just my bad luck. I am currently going through a warranty claim for a refund, if they replace the unit I will sell it and get something else.

I am not sure now the next time I can take an OS holiday but this certainly soured the experience.

              • -1

@starwarsfreak: You wasted your trip because you couldn't film?

You could as well save yourself some trouble and "travel" by watching YouTube or TikTok.

Vietnam is fascinating country, it should be visited with eyes open, not with camera always on.

                • @Jef Tino: the reason i got the GoPro was to VLOG my trip.. I have been there 4 times previously.. So on the aspect of capturing memories.. yes I did waste the trip.

            • +1

@FLICKIT: I literally just use it to film around the house, and mine creates sharp purple horizontal lines in footage. When I try to switch to highest quality setting, the camera shuts down. Overheating happened when I tried to do a hyperlapse mounted to my car's windscreen.

            • +2

@FLICKIT: Mate I was using it in a pool and it over heated, I used one of them in a helicopter in Canada and it overheated. It's nothing to do with the heat most of the time it's a faulty product. You must be a GoPro rep or something you're spending all your time defending them.

You didn't mention the main problem though, GoPros overheat

It was literally my fourth dot point…

        • Thanks for the detailed comment.

For a starter, safe buy would be DJI? INSTA 360 X4 is $700+.

Wondering the best value for money.

          • +1

@SnakeGrape: Depends on your use case and what you're after.

For a classic action cam with the standard perspective, the DJI Action 4 is probably the best choice.

The Insta360 x3 or x4 has a 360 degree view using two cameras (so it's sort of like two action cams glued together). You can get really cool shots with it, but requires a bit more post-processing. However, the coolest thing about these is the ability to just put it on a stick and walk around.

I'd also suggest looking at the Insta360 Go3, which is basically the same form factor as a DJI Action 4 or GoPro, but you can take the camera module out of the housing and use it as a really small camera you can tuck away anywhere. This is super awesome, because you can do cool things like wearing it on a pendant to get a true FPV. I really like how discreet it looks and it really takes away one of the frictions of recording, which is that you stick out in public.

            • @p1 ama: Seems like will zero in on Insta360.

Wondering if you can suggest drones for a starter as well, thinking of buying them together?

            • +1

              @p1 ama:

              The Insta360 x3 or x4 has

x4 has yet to be announced

          • @SnakeGrape: Safe buy is 100% DJI. I had an insta 360 and their warrantee is awful to deal with and mine also overheated because they don't have a lens cover that works in and out of water so you have to use the case which needs water on it 24/7. But then if you damage the lens you're stuffed. Unless you need and will use the 360 part of it then do not get it.

            • +1

@dyingofdiabetes: I agree 100% with everything mentioned about overheating GoPros.
Recently purchased the DJI Osmo Action 4 adventure combo for a sale price for boxing day. Awesome camera.
Goodbye to my old GoPro , the overheating POS. Spent so many times recording, well, thinking its recording, to later find that all the while it had overheated and hanged, just pretending to be recording.Lost all the footage on multiple occasions. So unreliable. Waste of time and money. Never again.

              • @metalhead: Since about the 3 they've gone downhill. Every one I've owned since then has had problems. Basically since they sold and changed hands and started focusing on everything except making a reliable camera. Funny how @flickit can dismiss all of these independent reports from people who own them all because his one GoPro apparently works perfectly even in the middle of the desert being on all day.

                  @dyingofdiabetes:

As does mine. I would have been inclined to say the air generated from riding is the reason like his but I've just spent a month walking around with it for hours overseas and no issues either.

You gotta be pretty stupid to believe all GoPro 11's have overheating issues when clearly they don't. Perhaps later batches have improved? Mine was purchased about 6 months ago.

                  • @Clear: As I already said to you "If every single one of them was terrible then no one would buy them at all, so clearly they're not all broken, but there's also clearly some quality issues.". So clearly I don't believe that, but clearly I do believe that there is an obvious issue they're not addressing because I've purchased several recent models that have all had this issue (The last 3 I've owned). I've never had or heard of this issue at all even in negative reviews online about the action 4. That alone should say something, why would you bet on getting lucky and getting a good gopro when you could get an action 4 that you know is going to work? I can't see the benefit, for some barely noticeably quality difference? To each their own, I'm just here to warn people of my own experience, and you can be here to tell them of yours.

                    • @dyingofdiabetes: Your reply to metalhead contradicted your reply to me. That's why I replied.

    • Interested to hear more - what are your top reasons for those products over the GoPros?

    • Just use your iPhone, good enough for many

      • Good enough for many, but no good as an action camera, which is what a Gopro is ;)

    • +3

100% agree except I would say skip the 360 too, I had one and their warrantee is atrocious and their lens is so easy to get damaged and it's basically a full camera replacement if you need to fix it so unless you will use the 360 a lot then skip this for sure. Get the action 4, hands down, no questions. I've had 3 recent GoPros all fail on me. I moved to the action 3 and then action 4, will never look back.

  • +1

Don't do it, get an Action 4. This pos will let you down any chance it gets.

    • Rubbish … 12 years of using Gopros and many thousands of hours recording and the only one that gave me any grief was the 8, I think they just tried to squeeze too much out of the old GP1 chip in that and it couldn't handle it…

The 10 has been as reliable as ever for me, I've recorded hundreds of hours on it and it hasn't let me down once, I only have a few hours on the 12 but it seems just as reliable… …

      • +2

Rubbish? What are you 50? For your 1 review of reliability you will find 10 of unreliability. I'd rather go with something I know will be reliable than luck out on the one that doesn't break down. There's plenty of others on here, on reddit, on youtube, all talking about the same issues I was experiencing with the GoPro so you don't need to take my word for it, I've also had friends tell me of different also concerning issues with the GoPros. And the good reviews are usually from places where it doesn't get hot enough for it to overheat. It's not made for use in Australia. Mine even overheated in Canada, absolute 'rubbish' as you would call it. You can keep supporting them all you want.

        • +4

A hell of a lot of the youtube reviews are just click bait from people trying to make money, and there's no shortage of shills out there… Most people that use them as they're designed to be used have no issues with them..

And the good reviews are usually from places where it doesn't get hot enough for it to overheat. It's not made for use in Australia.

lol, I've crossed every desert in the country, most a couple of times each, with a Gopro hanging off my helmet recording 100% of the time, no issues… My current project is uploading 63 hours of 4K-50fps footage to Youtube from riding the Canning Stock Route earlier in the year, 2000km, 3 deserts, 30+C heat everyday… It happily recorded all day, day after day, in full sun and decent temperatures, not a single issue…

No doubt there are some dud cameras out there, I have no idea why people that get a dud don't do a warranty claim, but I suspect a lot of the issues are bad memory cards, user error, or the likes…

          • @FLICKIT:

            1. It's more likely to skew to positive reviews because people want sponsorships and if they do negative reviews they won't get sponsorships and won't get sent free gear to review and they know that.
            2. I did do claims they kept saying that in their tests "I.e. running it once in an air conditioned room" they couldn't find any faults.
            3. As I said, it's great that you got lucky with a non faulty one, but for the rest of us, it's clear there are issues and it's not just people wanting click bait because when you watch the full videos they clearly have actual issues. If you consider a GoPro hanging off your helmet in the middle of the desert to be "as they're designed to be used" then I was WELL WITHIN that and it still failed me.

Geez, calm down bud, not everyone who disagrees with you is a shill. There's as much chance of them being paid off by DJI as you are paid off by GoPro, so no point with the ad hominem attacks.

Most people that use them as they're designed to be used have no issues with them..

Obviously, as you would expect with any product.

I've been eyeing the CSR as a 4WD route, brave tackling it on a motorbike. How did you tug along all of your supplies and camping equipment, or did you just organise drops along the way? Can't even begin to imagine doing it without a fully loaded 4WD.

FWIW, going back to the GoPro debate, I think a lot of this is getting worked up about nothing. Obviously the GoPro "works", the question is whether it's features are comparable to the alternatives at similar prices, which I still think no. The market for GoPro these days are existing GoPro users - if it works great for you and you're invested in the system, then by all means go for it.

However, as a neutral objective recommendation for someone who is just picking up an action camera for the first time and is platform agnostic, there are better options. As a rider, you would know there are plenty of cool shots you can do with something like an Insta360 x3 that are just jaw dropping that you can't do on a GoPro. Similarly, the tiny footprint of the Insta360 Go3 means you can tuck it away anywhere and get really cool FPV shots.

            • +1

              @p1 ama:

              Geez, calm down bud,

I'm calm, I find it all quite amusing really… My point is: You really cant put too much faith in most the video reviews claiming outrage about Gopros overheating when they test them by sitting them on a table and then bitching when they shut down after 40mins, or the likes… None of the overheating tests the reviewers do are real-life action-camera like conditions….

How did you tug along all of your supplies and camping equipment, or did you just organise drops along the way?

I did it solo unsupported, no fuel or supply drops… I left Wiluna with 2 weeks of food, 43L of fuel, 15L water, and all my camping gear, spares, tools, and such, it was a big awkward load… I restocked my water from wells along the way… I detoured (160km return) out to Parnngurr (Cotton Creek) from Georgia Bore to refuel, then refueled again at Kunawarritji… My bike averages 20km/l, so it's not too bad…

The market for GoPro these days are existing GoPro users - if it works great for you and you're invested in the system

There's no real investment in the system really, when I upgrade I flip my old one, including batteries and charger, and I buy new batteries and charger for the new one… Everyone has copied the Gopro mounts so they're all fairly universal these days… (Edit: I have held on to my 10 this time round, as a spare/backup, because it's been so good, and the quality isn't much below the 12)

As a rider, you would know there are plenty of cool shots you can do with something like an Insta360 x3

What I do is very basic, I'm just documenting my trips, I do very little editing, most my editing is with the on/off button, then I join clips together and upload them… Riding, hiking, boating, it's all much the same, record footage, join the clips together and then upload them, all pretty raw and real… i.e. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNmdA5qHJmY&list=PL4IO7m8cxw… (I'm not one to edit up just the money-shots in an attempt to gain views, fame, or money)…

I fully understand why someone who enjoys editing would go for a 360 camera, there is a lot you can do with them if you have the time and motivation, and/or you want to make super cinematic type videos….

…At the end of the day, my only bitch is about all the sheep banging on about Gopros being shit because they watched a youtube review about them overheating or such, when most of it is a beat-up… If someone wants a camera to use as a webcam, or to sit on their bedside table to record DIY porn, DONT BUY AN ACTION CAMERA, lol…

      • +3

Lmao. I used to have 8 and 10 for underwater photography and they have too many issues ( overheating even with enduro battery, unstable footages some times…). Then i got action 4 and x3 for scuba diving, the colour is so good (better than gopro with red filter) 1inch sensor , longer running time with 1 single battery and more fun too

        • My friend took her almost brand new GoPro snorkelling and the thing broke after being submerged 1M. They're truly useless.

11Black user here. It's my motorcycle dashcam, filming in 4k60 everyday I ride my bike. No issues at all, even in the dive case that's it's in. Took it to Japan during summer. 95% humidity and over 30c almost everyday. Recording in 5k, no issues at all.

Using Samsung Pro Endurance cards and genuine GoPro spare batteries.

The only thing I regret is taking photos with it, yeah it's clearly made for video, but I assumed it would take ok photos. Nope. My Pixel 7 Pro photos kill it. Regret taking some moment photos with the 11 instead of my Pixel7pro.

Unfortunately people watching "reviewers" who sit their Gopro flat on a table and complain that it shuts down after an hour caught on real fast. Instead of those who've tested them in real world conditions and don't have the same issue.

      • I own 3 of them. I know 2 friends who have had them. All of us have had issues with every one of them. Every comment on here has formed their opinion from real world usage not "reviewers". If every single one of them was terrible then no one would buy them at all, so clearly they're not all broken, but there's also clearly some quality issues.

  • Why they ditched GPS? I found it so useful to record the speed

    • I assume they removed it to lower costs and reduce the power consumption & heat, most people didn't use it, myself included, I 'could' have used it, but I never did (I'd have to dive into full editing if I did), I have a phone GPS app running ALL the time so I use that rather than a the camera GPS… (most people that didn't use it weren't bright enough to disable it, so that added to the heat issues people complain about, (you have a device siting inside or underwater attempting to get a fix on GPS satellites, and such, DOH… do the same with a phone and it chews through the battery and heats up also).

A lot of people are shitty about it being removed… It did seem good for motovloggers, circuit racers, and MTBers… Buy a 10 or 11 while you can ;)

    • My guess is to cut production costs and increase battery life. I never use the GPS feature.
