        • Any idea where you can buy the OLED version in the states?

      • No, I didn't get a tax refund on the device as it was only available from the domestic terminal - though it would have been great.

  • +1

I jumped on this earlier today, tracking details have already been sent.

  • Unless you really want the oled screen the ally is probably the better buy at this price point with a stronger APU and a vrr screen, especially considering this has a 50% surcharge from the US msrp (though that includes gst, so surcharge is more like 35%)

After having experienced the Steam Deck, I would be really hesitant to use a Windows equivalent. Steam OS is purpose built and just works, similarly to getting an Xbox or a PS5 over a gaming PC.

      • +1

Unless you only have Steam games, then RoG Ally and LeGo are better choices as they can run more launchers. Epic, Ubisoft, GoG, EA, BattleNet…and of course Emulator.

No doubt SteamDeck experience is more streamlined but install another OS to do what windows can do is just same amount of hassle and bad experience for gamers and vice versa.

        • +4

They both have their pros and their cons, I’d personally rather not deal with Windows on this sort of device. You can get Epic launcher and similar up and running on the Steam Deck without Windows (in Proton), this is a bit technical though/you are moving away from the best possible user experience.

I’d personally rather use the Steam Deck as stock as possible (some less games is a downside) though I think you benefit in other areas like battery life.

@Marrk: I just discovered NonSteamLaunchers. It makes installing games from other platforms a breeze.

@DASHCAM NOW DUDE: This is like you are buying Tesla for experience but need to open the electric engine yourself if you want to update something. Love the effort those. Thanks for sharing!

              • @ozgameboy: Not quite. It's more like buying Model 3 and then realising you can get some Model X features for a lot less with some DIY.

          • @Marrk: The Oled has definitely an advantage with longer battery due to low power consumption. Wonder if these windows handheld device will get upgrade with Oled in next updates.

        • Why not just have Windows launch Big Picture Mode on startup? You can install games on other launchers, but just get Steam to launch the executable. I do that for my gaming desktop that's connected to my TV.

      • Yeah there's a huge undervalued part of gaming in UI/UX that you don't appreciate until you go back to homebrew or Chinese dodgy-spec gear and realise even having menus in badly translated English makes the experience crappy.

As much as I wanted to enjoy my RetroPi sometimes games would misbehave (input lag on Bluetooth controller) and I really couldn't be bothered spending hours troubleshooting and fixing glitches when I do that all day at work.

I'll take a 25% hit to quality or speed if it works out of the box.

This is so overpriced. I get the stock is limited and not available officially within Australia but this is just bad.

I honestly struggle to see how this can be considered a bargain or good value. Might as well fly overseas to buy it as it'd be a better use of your time/money.

    • +7

People have been paying 1300 on Kogan. Its still just over 1k if you fly into HK/JP. Oh and the 1300 on Kogan is a preorder that ships in 2 weeks.

I and im sure many others in AU would gladly purchase one off you for > 1100

    • +2

yes it is overpriced. We are getting screwed by the resellers. The true price should be around $1000-1050.

(RRP $800 aud + ship + reseller fees) +10% tax

    • Whilst not the cheapest device to get in Australia, this is currently the best price for it and it is a new release, a neg is a bit harsh. It will likely be closer to the $1100 mark in 6 months, cheaper if lucky.

  • Does anyone know if I can buy this, and then get go through TRS at the airport with it?

    • +2

Why would this differ from any other products subject to GST?

  • +3

884 in Japan, 902 in Taiwan.

Luckily I got one in Taiwan.

Just got mine from Kogan on the 27th December. Loving it so far. Coming from someone who's never had a handheld PC before.

Got it via PayPal 4 in 4 and purchased/ordered around October so it was already paid off by the time the unit arrived.

I'm a casual gamer, so was awesome to be able to play most 'indie' titles (Hades, Dave the Diver, Slay the Spire, Stardew Valley etc.) for up to 6 hours with the battery.

More intensive titles like My Time at Sandrock, Hi-Fi Rush, Horizon Zero Dawn, Monster Hunter World etc. ran really well at around the 60fps mark for around 3 hours.

Didn't need CryoUtilities to better allocate VRAM and swapping, as the improved specs and firmware handled things much better this time around.

OLED is beautiful. Can't recommend the unit to anyone else - was just in my budget and wanted to buy myself a nice Christmas present.

    • +1

I suppose it is not recommended for folk in house share sharing limited wifi data since all the games all large and downloaded. Right?

      • +2

If you already have a PC with your games installed on it, and your SteamDeck is connected to the same network, it has this feature where games will instead ‘transfer’ directly using the network’s router transfer speed and not chew up internet bandwidth. I only play single player games on it and try to download while everyone in my household is asleep anyway.

        • Cool feature

  • +4

I'm so glad I got mine from Japan, they happened to be selling them at the airport before my flight back and grabbed the 1TB OLED for shy of $1k

    • Does this device you got from Japan come with an AC Adaptor for charging and if it does, do you need an international plug thing to convert it to an Australian plug?

      • +3

Yes and yes, but the one I got from Kogan is the exact same, there aren't any steam decks with an Australian plug

    • Where at the airport? :O

  • Do these only work with Steam? Or can I play my games from GOG, Epic etc on it,too?

  • +1

This will be perfect for playing VNs.
Agree it’s still pricey but for the reality of living down under where it isn’t officially sold, that’s the best we are likely to see for a while.

  • +3

LCD version is good enough and way cheaper. You won't be disappointed.

    • I have the LCD version and I love it. You can improve the colour vibrancy/saturation to get it closer to OLED for free:

      https://youtu.be/WPfChFTqMu8?si=0Bxx2Cccnerlay7W

That's my consolation anyway as I can't justify buying an OLED when I already have the LCD version.

  • Hopefully drops down far more, wouldn't fork out this much for an OLED. Carn valve, sell em in Aus!

  • +3

At this price you're better off getting a better spec'd Windows handheld.

    • -1

Nah Rog Ally and Legion Go are hampered by windows

      • SDOLED or LGO at the same price, what one?

  • Nice. Already got a 512gb lcd. Probably best purchase I made in this lifetime.

  • I love this but you can also get the Legion GO Extreme for this price on sale

    What one?

    • -1

this one. legion seems to have many issues that could drive you insane. go watch a bunch of hands on reviews if you havent already. also being able to pause your game by pressing the power button (on the deck) is awesome. alternatively, just buy the LED version which is almost as good

  • Interesting that their list price is "just" $1300. I was expecting a higher list price and just a bigger discount.

Jumping in at 3 digits. Give Valve some time to work out all the little kinks.

  • Sold out already

  • +1

this brings me to think.. do ppl buy playstation in Japan rather than AU ?

  • Ok, so I ordered mine and chose the longer 4 day shipping option that delivers next week because I am on holidays and no one will be at the delivery address to accept the delivery until Monday.

They sent it express anyway and is due to arrive today 🤦. Hoping they can have a few deliver attempts that can bring them into next week!

    • what if they left it outside instead?

      • Nah it's signature only. They attempted delivery and now it says they will take it back to the post office to pick it up.

It was my workplace and I am actually not back until the following week!

Someone would have been there to accept it on my behalf this coming Monday.

Not sure what to do now! They are too efficient 😂

  • -2

Nah, I'll wait for Valve to release the Steam Deck 3…. oh, crap.

  • Anyone know of House Party runs in the deck and if so how it runs? Interested to play this game for the story and the new upcoming office party

  • not going to japan but going to bali will they have steam decks imported? probably not right?

  • +2

Lucky me picked up a tax free deck at the main Kyoto Edion store in japan, 77k yen so just under $800 aud. If youre going to Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong or Taiwan in the next few months definitely hold out on purchasing so you can pick one up there, however it does use most of your $900 tax free goods limit. The drastic difference in touchpads, screen and battery make it super easy to recommend for anyone considering a handheld.

  • Where abouts in Japan?

  • +2
