    holy… i will wait for 600

    • +69

Titanic lady: it’s been 84 years

      • I mean I bought my 64gb LCD for 350£ = 650AUD and I think I paid around 80$ for a 512gb drive so it's not that insane to think these might come down alot one day

        • +5

But they don't sell the OLED in 64gb

    • +9

I'll wait till they're giving them out for free.
      Surely….

      • +7

I'll wait till they pay you to take it.

      • -1

        Wait for a Steam sale.

    • +9

      $1,000 will do.

      • +1

I'm on holiday in the USA. These are $549 USD in GameStop stores. The 1tb is $649.

        • +1

          549 USD = 815.56 AUD

          So +10% gst = 897.116

Then postage costs are probably $100 - 200

So I'd say $1000 for those of us who aren't traveling and don't have family abroad would actually a solid deal

        • I thought in USA you couldn't buy in store and had to be via steam online?

          • +1

@Pecco: Just started selling them in a few GameStop stores. Seen stands in Florida Mall & NYC however the OLED models sold out over Xmas, waiting for more stock.

    • +2

      Dreamin'

    • I love mine, but not for $1200… I'd get the Lenovo Legion Go at this price - the ability to play games from the Epic Store and Game Pass alone is worth it.

  • +23

Will be interested to see how low in price these get. Hard to justify almost double the price of the LCD version

    • doesn't it have a hardware upgrade also

edit: oh it just uses a smaller nm APU with same specs, so more power efficient… lame

      • +11

It also has faster RAM, which for AMD APU's gives a pretty nice boost.

Not sure the exact increase in performance, maybe 5-10%.

        • +2

i guess efficiency is a decent buff too for a hand held. also running cooler = less throttling. Could be better in practice even though similar on paper.

      • +4

Bigger battery, better CPU (its just a bit better), way better screen.

Honestly the screen and the battery changes are super massive.

    • +5

Dem black levels be super black I will say. Definitely happy with the non-oled one though.

    • +3

I don't think you can get a 512 GB Steam Deck (Non-OLED) for $600 (talking about the stock model, obviously), but I get your point. $1200 is steep!

    • +18

Not quite apples and oranges.. at double the price you're comparing 64GB vs 512GB. The OLED comes with

       + bigger OLED display
       + 25% bigger battery
       + more efficient APU
+ wifi 6E with bluetooth wake
       + slightly faster RAM
+ metal threads so disassembly doesn't risk ruining threads / affect strength
       - no anti-glare screen (some may consider this a plus given it affects quality/colours)

If you compare the 512GB LCD which is ~1000 on sale it is more favorable and probably worth paying the extra imo.

      • +8

I think my 64GB LCD Deck plus a 1TB SSD to upgrade was $660~ total from recent sales, so it's still significantly cheaper at the moment.

The extra features/revisions on the OLED are really nice though. I'd definitely consider paying extra for the the 512GB at $850~ instead when in Japan as other folks mentioned, but the complete lack of warranty is a little risky.

      • 90hz display that can be overclocked

  • +4

I'm seriously thinking of flying to japan to get one of these bad boys and plan a trip around that.

    • +2

Yeah, I think its less than $900 in Japan, but probably hard to find.

      • +2

Yeah when I was in Japan in mid year only a few stores were certified sellers and only base model was in stock from memory.

      • +10

Just returned from Japan and only could find non oled available all the oled models out of stock at Edion and Yodobashi. Picked up the 256gb LCD model for $540 so happy enough with it for the $$$.

        • +2

Is yodobashi an official distributor for steam deck?

          • @inamberclad: Not all stores from what I saw but the Akiba and Umeda stores had them.

            • @ozstig: Bugger. I went to shin Osaka and Nagoya but couldn't find them there. At Tokyo now so might head to Umeda. Still unclear if steam deck or Asus ally would be better for me (weekend gamer)

              • @inamberclad: Someone here on another deal page said if you want the best console-like experience, the Steam Deck is the way to go. If you want more power, get the Asus or Lenovo.

I don't have any, so I can't say from experience. I have a lot of Epic and Amazon games though, so I'd go with one of the Windows ones.

              • @inamberclad: If you want a console experience where you just game, then Steam Deck is recommended. I don't think you want to spend the time tinkering too much on a Windows handheld just to make a game work because by then the weekend would be over.

I wouldn't worry too much about performance because most games (on Steam) appear to be quite optimised for it. As long as the game can hit around 30fps (LCD) or 40-45fps (OLED), it will be very smooth on the screen. I play a lot of F1 2023 on my SD OLED and 45fps locked on 90Hz screen is ultra smooth.

        • Was in Japan right when the OLED model was released. Looked all over Tokyo central two days after the release date, but all of the official stores only had the non-OLED model. Disappointed, but picked up the 64GB model anyway for a good price. I'm very happy with it nonetheless.

      • +1

You can get them tax free so it’s about $800 for a 512gb model.

Also see the discord below if you do go, made it much easier to find stock.

        • Nice one, what is the process to get it tax free as a tourist when buying in the shop?

    • +6

I got one in Japan last week. They sell out quickly but are restocked regularly.

There is this discord chat which can help you find stock if you do go: https://discord.gg/u6CWeAXG

    • +4

I picked up 1tb OLED LE when I was in Canada last month for $1060 AUD. Pretty good!

    • I have a friend in Japan, how much do you think it would cost him to ship it over to me?

    • There's a Discord server created for Japan Travellers hunting for SD OLEDs. Supply is pretty dry at the moment. There was a surge in supply right on Christmas Eve where a couple of stores had stock for almost 2 days.

  • +11

    Sorry.. .01c over my budget

    • +2

      Understandable

    • +1

      Same, HODL

    • +7

So your budget is $1200.0099 ?

      • -8

        No… i didn't say .01 of a cent…

  • +8

Just looked up what people meant by $600 or around half the price of this, that's for the 64gb one (which is NAND storage btw). This one is the 512gb one, which is around $960 for the non OLED. so its about $240 more for the OLED version which is also a refresh (so a few small changes besides the screen).
Honestly, with all the reviews I've watched about the steamdeck in general, it entices me a lot, but 80% of the games I play I use KBM.

    • +9

To be fair, you can get a 1TB M.2 2230 SSD for <$100 and install it yourself.

    • +6

what is KBM ? keyboard and mouse?

    • +5

I think the point is most people were buying the 64gb and upgrading to 1 or 2tb.

My 2tb LCD unit cost just over $800 after being upgraded

For the OLED you have to buy the 512gb and then upgrade to 2TB SO ~$1400 all said and done.

There is no question the OLED is better but it’s not $600 better. The 64gb LCD is the one to get. Save the extra $600 for whatever the next model is.

      • That’s on the condition that the battery life on the base model is acceptable when it isn’t. Unlike the switch you pretty much can’t take it anywhere without the charger

        • -1

Depends on the game and tdp you use

    • It's extremely easy to upgrade the drive yourself

  • +3

Part of me is tempted to upgrade from the OG Steam Deck, as the display was a downgrade from the Switch OLED..

    • +1

Yup. I'm holding out on playing little nightmares 2 until I get my hands on the OLED version. Not sure how long i'll be able to wait though…

      • FWIW it looks great on the LCD version still.

    • +3

      tempted

Go on mate you deserve it. 2024 been a wild one.

  • how will the warranty for this work?
    under Mobilciti?

    • +4

The Steam Deck isn't officially sold in Australia, so warranty would be through Mobileciti.

    • +5

      The listing says:
      Warranty 12 Months(AU)

They would be required to take and sort out the device under Australian Consumer Law. This could mean waiting on them to post overseas or a local 3rd party repairer looking at the device.

    • +1

thanks guys. tempted to grab one, just worried about the warranty.

      • +3

At least Mobileciti are pretty well known, probably the best option in Australia apart from Kogan.

        • +1

yes, i would rather pay mobileciti more to get that piece of mind

  • +3

I have one (LCD, 512GB) that I bought at the behest of a friend whilst I was living in the EU, and it's a game-changer.
I too was a long-time skeptic but hats off to Valve for pulling the steam deck off.

Especially in Australia where some of us have to do the long commute home, there's no better way to wind down than a good gaming sesh.
And it's only going to get better as more games are Steam Deck ready out of the block.

I think the LCD screen is more than good enough so won't be looking to upgrade unless there's significant upgrade in the underlying hardware.

    • I originally bought an LCD SD and upgraded it to 1TB but found that the screen size (I have crappy eyes) and not being able to use Xbox Gamepass was a bit of of a killer for me. I sold it and picked up a Legion Go recently and it has been perfect for my needs, definitely worth cross shopping the OLED SD with the Legion Go especially at these prices and considering local warranty support on the Go.

  • -5

    Ain't nobody paying $1,200 for a gameboy.

    • +1

Agree, these are crazy expensive for what they are.

      • +6

Not really. Gaming laptops start from the same money and go up alot more for top specs.

        • -2

Gaming laptops do a lot more?

          • +4

@John Doh: Cheap gaming laptops are usually bulky/heavy and often have poor displays to make up for the cost. This is a completely different form factor and the best ecosystem for this type of device.

            • +3

@Marrk: PS5 with disc costs a lot less. Not sure why a quad core CPU stuffed inside a small handheld should cost 1300AUD. All i can say is people have more disposable money.

              • +8

@John Doh: If you don’t care about the form factor, there are cheaper options. Kind of comparing apples and oranges though.

                • -2

@Marrk: No, we are just in that era of ultra/pro/max phones or the GPUs where they became expensive for no reason. They know how to milk.

              • @John Doh: Yeah, we should all buy desktops. Coupled with giveaways, it's the most economical gaming experience.

                • -1

@ihfree: I didnt say that though. I said these are expensive for what they are, like the ridiculously expensive phones and GPUs.

              • -1

@John Doh: PS5 is the size of a kei car.

          • +8

@John Doh: Gaming laptop don’t have that steam deck ventussy smell tho

          • +2

@John Doh: gaming laptops do a lot less? I can't play cyberpunk on a plane, train or bus on a gaming laptop. I can't play it in bed while laying on my side. it's a full blown pc but with a gaming oriented design. it's amazing that has to be spelled out for you.

            • -2

@JigBew: whats amazing is, despite all the comments above, you are not getting the gist of it - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14798161/redir

              • +2

@John Doh: i understand your point but as someone who replied to you said, gaming laptops start at the same price, i countered your rebutal saying laptops can't do what a steam deck can, it's an apples to oranges comparison. it's gaming performance per watt beats out any gaming laptop, it's form factor is bad for some things but is amazing for gaming during transport, in bed and any other situation where a laptop is too clunky. i was skeptical before purchasing mine, intending only to use it on trips but i use it every single day. the seamless intergration between my gaming pc, being able to pick up my deck and continue streaming the game and playing whily carrying a single device.. i'm not going to bring my laptop and a controller around the house like that. it has flat out replaced my gaming pc as my primary gaming device which.. i never would have believed had someone told me prior to buying. i'm not saying everyone gets that value but the level of refinement the deck has cost money, and frankly for $800 for a 2tb lcd deck.. it's good value to me.

i think the biggest arguement agaist the oled version is it including an ssd rather than just a 64gb SD card so the user can add their own ssd. that part screams smart phone rip off, i'll give you that but it's not a point you tried to make. further more i don't think it off sets the value of the form factor because it enables you to do so much. it's a niche product but my god the dollar per hour of entertainment is one of the lowest i've hit in a while.

                • @JigBew: Agree makes sense with what you said. Probably 600 is what i would go for a smaller storage and add some sd card myself to it. 1300 is a rip off! But I probably would not game on a handheld considering i upgraded from a 27 to 42" 4k OLED.

        • Under 8" sceen is a joke.

    • +13

Ahem, it's a Gameboy that can play Cyberpunk 2077.

      • +7

        but can it run Crysis?

        • +4

          Yes.

    • +3

This is like when people call all gaming consoles a Nintendo.

  • +6

I mentioned this in a another post, but the OLED version looks fantastic and is overall a great device.

To help put price into perspective though, I managed to snag the 1TB OLED at Haneda Airport when I was in Japan for about $1k AUD. The 512GB was roughly about $850.00 but sold out before I could get it.

As someone who loves this device, I think this price is a little high - though I acknowledge that I was lucky enough to buy it at retail.

    • Did that include duty free refund?

      • +3

Msrp without taxes is around $810 AUD in the states and $850 in Japan

        • Pretty cheap
