I had same issue from last deal. I went to the store, went through all hoops but stuck at final step for payment, nothing went further. A few staff tried again & again, no hope. They raised a complaint finally due to frustration or just in case I rate them badly due to frustration.
Telstra complaint department was persistent in contacting me & got IT involved. Nothing can solve my problems as well as some others. They assured me to buy in a Telstra shop at normal price and they'll refund me 50% to honour the deal. My shops were out of stock for a few months. I finally got the phone and the refund later.
I'm not impressed at all with the Pixel 7, the only 3 things noticeable are better than my 5 yo Mate 20 Pro are 5G, eSIM & updates.

      • +1

No issues with last Telstra @$499 deal got phone ok. Was nearly going back to my old Mate 20 Pro as had fingerprint scan issues with Pix7, battery life is rubbish, but the eSim is handy, also some good case options on Ali-express for the Pix7

      • +4

Im not impressed at all with the Pixel 7, the only 3 things noticeable are better than my 5 yo Mate 20 Pro are 5G, eSIM & updates

        Really?

        • Yea, really! agree with Jamesx …no great advancement, I am using it and while its just ok for $499 would never pay more.

        • +4

          Don't get me start it:
5 yo phone with same size battery last longer,
charge much faster wired or wireless on same charger,
finger unlock similar but face unlock never work in dim with Pixel7, the other unlocks every single time side by side
Photos maybe similar(?) but focus and taking photos are slower and consumes way more battery
I hate to say it, I use Pixel for calls & banking and Mate 20 Pro for everything else, end of day, Pixel dies first.
I played with Mate 60 Pro, great phone, no Google! not even Android anymore.

          • @Jamesx: If you need to use the phone as a phone, and on data often rather than WIFI, I would not recommend a Pixel 7.

The reception can be atrocious, I didn't even know that GPRS still existed until I got a Pixel 7 late last year. In some locations I get literally no reception at all, whereas my last three phones all worked fine.

The photos are give and take imo, sometimes the post processing is way too aggressive, and you end up with a heap of overly raised/sharpened details that make people and objects look dirty.

The screen suffers from pink/blue banding at angles, and the colour balance feels overly blue, probably due to this banding.

Bluetooth can be flaky, I had to change various developer options to make bluetooth work with my car stereo.

Screen casting is worse than Apple or Samsung, and does not support high res streaming of the phones display like Airplay or Miracast, instead you have to stream from apps, OR stream a low res / low bitrate capture of your screen via Cromecast.

Google Assistant seems to be pretty bad lately for some reason, I never thought I'd say it, but I think I preferred Siri for the 1 year I used an iPhone.

I think the only upside is the technically 'stock' Android software, but also be prepared to be treated as a tester for whatever random crap Google want to add to their phones. I don't know if it's just a Pixel thing, but so many apps I've had crash and require clearing of cache and data to function again.

Oh, and you have the option of GrapheneOS to have an android phone minus Google services, but that can be quite crippling for people these days.

Battery seems fine enough on Android 14, but don't expect the crazy battery life of a ~$400 china phone.

            • @TekniqAU: Have almost the exact same feelings re:assistant and Siri. God the voice dictation on assistant seems to have gone off the rails. When I was dictating messages on my brief iOS sojourn, never had any issues. I still can't access functionality that was available at launch. Shit's (profanity).

Hi got a mate20pro, purchased 3- 4 yrs back at Harvey Norman. Start using it last year, find it very slow compared to my previous mate 20pro, any ideas why it's so slow. Thanks

        • +5

Sorry, hard to say? have you tried factory reset? by the way I didn't neg … why would ppl neg? when someone asks a Q??

        • Back up your old Mate 20 Pro, factory reset new one, transfer old to new one, see what happens.

        • Huawei would have stopped updating apps long time ago. New apps probably not compatible with old devices without the updates

          • +1

@navshaf: Still rockin my mate 20 pro and it refuses to die. Batt degrades a bit but overall still a good and capable phone 💪🏿

        • +3

Huawei produced top quality stuff including additional features in their version of android.. I've got Mate 10 pro, last update was July 2022, bought it in 2018, love to use it even today.. Huawei used their AI to generate a user profile for phone usage to help it keep getting faster as per user phone habits.. and they did it all back then.. also used iphone se and 12 mini recently and both those phones were garbage in front of mate 10 pro, pixel 7 is still better than iphone..

      • same problem here

I think it has something to do with profit boost sim order. if you try to order boost sim you will get same message.

somehow telstra anti fraud system is playing up with us

    • I did it through the Telstra app. Worked for me 🤷

    • I had the same issue last time and was able to order by installing the telstra app pn my phone and using that to order

$450 off Pixel 7 Pro too

  • +15

Don't buy the official case. It's so crap. Not enough lip to protect the screen or allow you to use a screen protector even. Mine also ripped a bit in a corner without being abused. Avoid.

Tbh the pixel itself fails to register touches properly with a screen protector too. And the fingerprint scanner screws you over a bit much.

Frankly it's a basic phone with little going for it other than the camera is ok. It's almost worth $500 I suppose.. but only because the competition got more expensive

    • +2

Yeah the official case on my 6 Pro decided to split with very basic use. The case on my Pixel 2 is still going strong though. I'm of two minds with Pixel phones - I do genuinely like the updates you get for them, but they definitely feel a bit mid rather than an actual premium phone. I would still prefer it over a Samsung though.

    • +2

On my Pixel 8 Pro I noticed the lack of responsiveness you were having with your screen protector. I did some searching and there's a screen protector mode in settings you can turn on which makes it a lot better. Might be worth seeing if your model has it too

      • I had the setting on and it's still crap. Which is why I don't have a screen protector any more.

        • +1

Did you register your finger print before or after installing the screen protector?
My wife recently got the pixel 7 and has no issues with finger print scanner, but she installed screen protector first then did finger print.

          • @CheapGit: I can't recall. I'm planning to give it another go in the near future

          • +1

@CheapGit: Using an amFilm screen protector on my Pixel 7 and my wife has an amFilm Elastic Skin on her 7 Pro (screen protector mode is on for both phones) neither phone are having any issues and touch screen sensitivity feels the same on both.

I just bought my son a Pixel 7 from this deal (Thanks OP) and got him a Dexnor case (with built in screen protector) to keep it in.

            https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/295885364813?var=594089287985

Not expecting any issues with the Dexnor case either but will come back to this post and update if required.

I think it might be a combination of Google quality control measures, bad luck and some people being overly sensitive to issues.

        • +1

No doubt you've searched for the tips the tricks, but I've found this helps:

          • screen protector mode off
          • register fingerprints again after applying screen protector
          • register each thumb twice, and in different lighting conditions
          • there may have been another setting to do with the lock screen where it waits to unlock or something.

I've found those cheap AmFim protectors from Amazon work fine.
Pixel 8 has face detection which helps but is much the same phone and didn't really need to upgrade.
I'm liking the slightly smaller form factor for one handed operation, but the pricks have made the edges curved again so limited cheap screen protectors around (had to get a custom one put on).

    • +19

It's more than a basic phone, and the camera is more than just OK.

I have one after owning a Pixel 6 Pro and I honestly find it a better form factor than the larger Pro.

At this price point it's pretty good value for money, but unless you urgently needed a new phone, I'd probably wait for the Pixel 8 to go on sale for a little more and enjoy the 7 years of software updates (until 2030 vs 2025 on the Pixel 7).

As for cases, get a Spigen case - they're excellent.

      • -4

Why is it more than basic?

It has nothing more than the minimum of hardware. No expandable memory. No 3.5mm. No good DAC. No radio. Second rate fingerprint scanner so they didn't need to put better hardware. NFC is almost mandatory these days for payments, so I won't give it credit for that. I suppose it has wireless charging which could be considered optional.

Mid range phones can have these features for cheaper (they sacrifice camera), so why can't the pixel have these features and good camera at it's more expensive price point?

It's cpu is fast enough and fair comment that I've undersold the camera.

        • +9

Look, if you're hung up on the nerdy hardware inclusions that 95% of people don't care about, it's not the phone for you. Most people have moved on from 3.5mm, use Bluetooth, don't know what a DAC is let alone be able to tell the difference if it had a good one, and never bother to use the expandable memory even if they could find a phone that had it these days.

The Pixel 7 honestly does everything that the vast majority of people need from a phone and it does it well, in a form factor with a quality feel. Basic phones are always a compromise in one way or another - usually either support, build quality or camera quality. On sale, the Pixel 7 is exceptional value, considering that anything else in this price range won't even come close to matching its camera.

And the fingerprint scanner is fine - it works without issue on mine (with a screen protector too). Not that I need to use it all that ofter - it has face unlock.

          • @dontpanic: Nerdy hardware? I like it to play music and have storage. My 3.5mm headphones not only kick the arse out of anything Bluetooth on the market, but storage allows to keep monthly mobile phone costs down. It's not much to ask at this price point and it's not nerdy

            • +6

@justtoreply: Like I said, this isn't the phone for you. You have a specific set of requirements that 95% of people have moved on from. There are phones out there that target your needs.

But just because the Pixel 7 doesn't meet your niche requirements, doesn't make it a basic phone.

      • +1

I think the internet has just proven the camera is more than just OK having won MKBHD's blind camera test in back to back years. (7/ 7Pro last year, 7a this year - no 7/7Pro on the lineup) This is up against every heavyweight flagship with millions of data points so it's safe to say it's the best camera on a phone out there for your average consumer.

It's most definitely the best VALUE camera on a phone by a long shot especially at this price point.

    • Trolling or no idea lol.
Who would buy the official case for $50+
Spigen rugged armour perfect, will last longer than the phone.

      • It cost $25 and was the only case readily available as I bought the pixel at launch ($515 iirc)

Also, my last phone I used a spigen and it allowed sand in and this made an absolute wreck of the phone housing

        • I see, I never bother with the official cases, they want too much (about $54) and JB never have them at time of release.

Can't go wrong with the Spigen one I mentioned have had them on 3 pixels now. No issues.

  • Is this locked to Telstra?

    • +2

      NO !

      • I am chatting with an agent and he is saying even if you buy it outright, I would have to pay the following fees to get it unlocked.

*The new device is locked with Telstra network. You can request for unlock code of it will not be activated with Telstra service at all.

If it was activated on the Telstra network for less than two years, we charge:
        1. $80 for devices never activated or only active for six months or less
        2. $25 for devices activated for six months to 2 years
        3. $0 for devices activated 2 years or more*

        • +2

He is wrong, ignore him. I purchased mine from Telstra originally. It's unlocked.

          • @zxcvb: Are you sure? did you buy an outright pre paid phone from Telstra?

        • +2

All non prepaid phones and tablets are unlocked

  • +1

based off previous deal experience, easier to just get price match in store at Optus

    • I need this no later than tomorrow. Maybe I'll price match at officeworks and collect today from a store nearby

    • did you need to pay outright and then get a refund within 14 days of delivery? this is what the online chat agent is mentioning to me

      • not sure about online but if you go in store, they process the price match and you only pay the $499 on the spot, no account required

        • I got no help from one store, another store they matched the deal but wouldnt let me buy it outright, I had to pay it over 24 months

          • +1

@gfunk zero: Boo, who wants lock in contracts.
            Maybe try another store lol.
Sounds easier to get a boost Sim (and Telstra ID). I get those 365 day Sims with 170gb for ~$170.

Would be able to get a used-new pixel 7 for $300 or less by now on eBay.

  • Is there a way to buy this without a Telstra account?
It won't let you purchase outright if you don't have an active plan, by the looks of it.

    • Don't think so, might need a $2 SIM, that worked for me in the past

      • The $2 sim trick didn't work for me last time Telstra did this offer. Had to use my mum's account.

    • Just go to a Telstra store in person which has stock. Worked for me last time. The guy set up an account for me with Telstra for the purchase to go through but I didn't pay anything for the account.

      • +5

Can buy in stores now with no Telstra account directly through the POS/TIll

  • -5

Look up reddit pixel 7 overheating, poor battery life and reception issues

    • +7

I've been daily driving my Pixel 7 since launch and have never experienced these issues but ymmv. I did have the spontaneous shattering of my camera glass but my warrenty experience was easy.

      • -1

did you buy insurance? my front screen is cracked but i dont have insurance

        • No, I bought it from the Google Store and used the included warranty.

    • +6

I did genuinely have poor battery life issues in the beginning, but firmware updates and the battery AI really helped massively.

    • +5

Have my Pixel 7 since June last year with Zero issues. It's an excellent phone and a steal at this price.

    • +2

      No issues here

    • +1

I had those issues with the Pixel 6 Pro, but the Pixel 7 has been rock solid. Great phone for the price.

    • there were some issues at launch, but they have been mostly fixed. Some new buggy issues with the update to Android 14 as well as features in the software update that 8/8pro brought, but by and large it's fairly functional.

Not to mention it's just won back to back MKBHD blind camera tests so it's pretty safe to call it the best camera on a phone in the market for the average user.

    Having the below error :(

We're unable to process the order at this time.

cool tool… but yeah not much out there

      • +3

Watch it go up after Telstra pulls the deal. A few times Telstra has reduced prices and there's a mad rush to price beat at Officeworks and after enough calls to their call centre they make it go out of stock online (though you can still check individual stores separately on the day). Then when deal disappears, stock counts suddenly become normal again

        • +1

That's is shonky business practice and should be called out.

          • +1

@he88388: Oh but they must've gotten a new shipment straight after the deal is over….

  • -1

Pretty good. Could do something like get a Poco f4 for 400 and flash pixel experience for a bigger screen. I have Poco f3 and can't justify changing it because it runs so well, nice AMOLED. Only neg is average camera.

    • +9

Ah the "what doesn't work? You tell me" experience. Custom ROMs are a meme these days.

      • -1

        Wot?

    • +2

most people wants better camera than other things

    • +1

Camera is one of the main deciding factors for some people. Plus, custom ROMs are glitchy at times, a bit of a pain.

      • Honestly, I went from a mi 9t to a pixel 8 pro and the thing I missed the most was the custom ROM (was using PixelOS).

As you said though, camera was really the only reason for upgrading.

        • Stable rom experience was huge for me

    • I decided to take it, as my Poco F2 is almost 3.5y/o, and despite working well, will not receive any updates from Xiaomi …

  • Just tried PM with JB Hifi (using Telstra and officeworks links) and no go. Boo as I need a good pixel deal stat!

    • JB told me since it needs an active telstra ID they don't PM

    • JB should price-match officework. it isn't a clearance.

      • +1

        No stock so probably wont

  • +3

I used this in Japan instead of a mobile router.

Using Google 1 yo flagship phone for hotspot… emm

    • Does this overheat or warm with minimal usage (eg browe the web). Have read a lit of poor experience but everytime there is a deal people upvote pixel. Someone has to be lying very hard to tell who

      • I have a pixel 7 pro and I only notice it getting warm when watching YouTube at high resolutions at 1.5-2x speed.

      • Mine only heats up during fast charging.

      • It can. Had to return one that would get hot while the screen was off and it was just sitting on the table. Updates and safe mode did nothing. New one still gets quite warm when making calls compared to the Samsung A and S series

    • -3

the battery life is no good, way worse than a 5yo Mate 20 Pro.
