  • Cheap entry into grapheneOS

  • this or Samsung A54 5G (also listed as $499)?

    • +4

Get this. Better software features, camera and frequent updates.

      • Hrrmmmm Samsung has 120Hz vs 90Hz screen though..

        • Depends on what you value more.

    • If you can wait, there's a good chance the S23 will go on sale after the S24 launches. It's a much better phone and with a trade in, occasionally can be bought in this price range

    • +1

Consider a Galaxy 23FE - currently $644 with trade in.

My trade in is only worth $5 but that triggers the $250 trade in bonus and its $100 off bringing it within spitting distance of this phone which is over a year older.

    • -1

Samsung is honestly more reliable. Out of 4 pixels people I know have bought, 1 had minimal overheating, 2 had moderate overheating, and 1 had extreme overheating problems. Had to return that last one.

    • Samsung A54 5G will have more Andriod OS update than this.

  • +18

I bought one for my ungrateful teenager for $480 + 7100 points on Telstra plus.

    • Maybe he/she will be grateful now?

      • +8

        Doubt it

        • +11

Probably asked for an iPhone 15 Pro Max Extreme Ultra.

  • +1

Does anyone know if JB will price match?

    • I tried and didnt work. I have gift cards I need to use!

    • Optus will.

    • Depends on the store, my store we price matched it after verifying your Telstra phone number/name

  • Great deal thank you!

  • +11

FYI, boost phone number works as a Telstra account too

    • how do I link it to my telstra account?

      • +2

When I moved to boost, I just logged in with my Telstra ID, never setup a 'boost' specific ID.

      • +2

if you're going to register a new Telstra account. you will be asked to link to either a postpaid account number/a phone number/a mobile number.

I used my Boost mobile number and it works fine.

btw, this boost sim is a new number I started using 2 weeks ago.

    • Order declined by Control Group

Was able to get to the payment page a bit ago. After checking a few things, the page got refreshed. Now got this message!

  • Does anyone know if this would be locked to the Telstra network? Can't find any information.

    • No it's not

      • How are you able to tell?

        • +1

All pixels are unlocked across all carriers in Aus AFAIK.. I also have a P7 from Telstra direct, and also bought a Pixel 6a for my partner a month after my 7, she was on Vodafone and had no issues at all. Though we're both on Boost now.

        • Because it's Pixel (Google)?

        • +1

Standalone phones sold by Telstra have not been locked in a very, very long time.

        • Bought a Pixel 7 from a previous Telstra deal - definitely not locked.

        • read the response on the first page from Telstra employees. only prepaid phone on Telstra are locked

  • what's the cheapest way to get a Telstra id?

    • I hear Optus may pricematch

      • +1

I tried the online pricematch with Optus but wasn't comfortable signing a contract for full price, paying full price and then having to ask for reimbursement of the difference after delivery based on the contents of a chat. This was after giving all my personal details to create an Optus account and being upsold a "great deal" monthly plan.

        • Yeah, I have a current plan that I'm on with Optus, and just went through the same process. They matched the price and told me I would get a reimbursement within 15 days. Saved the chat log and received an email confirmation but looks like they'll definitely price-match the Obsidian without issue.

        • +1

I priced match with Optus during last deal. Initially they charge full amount and then refund 50% in 2 weeks. Someone at Optus messed up and didn't get refund for 6 weeks. Multiple chats & calls but no success. Finally I raised case with TIO and was refunded $990. So I got 256GB for just around $150

      • I got stuffed around by one store but managed to pricematch with another store provided I pay over 24 months not outright, also they are out of stock in most stores but can order the phone in

  • +2

Anyone with a boost Sim has a Telstra ID on the backend. You can create a telstra ID and use your phone number. Just did it before and confirmed working and was able to order

    • Unless you apparently already have a telstra ID but no services. I can't see a way to add a service manually, or create a new account (even with new email) because as soon as you put your details in it links you to your other account…

  • +1

Trying to work out if ~$129 extra for the 256GB is worth it.

    • I would say worth it. I am on 128gb and wish had 258. Storage gets used up pretty quickly with apps and videos

    • If you record video a fair bit, then yes. For primarily images+apps, I would say 128gb is good enuf.

  • +5

No luck at Officeworks in Melbourne, stock is dried up.
Box Hill is a stock error and Bundoora is a refurb so don’t waste your time.

    • Why aren't refurbs worth it ? Store near me said refurb excellent condition for $350

      • +1

That’s an awesome price for a refurb one, I’d be all over that.

Assuming it’s a real refurb and not a trade in that they cleaned the screen and hope there’s no issues with it.

        • +1

Certified refurb, not ex display. Staff said someone traded in and then was sent off to be checked/repaired, then they are redistributed to stores (at random?).
Comes with 12 month warranty, sealed box. Bought it, looks pristine.

  • Got one. Thanks OP. No issues going through the order process.

  • Thank OP, bought again, this time for myself. Last August bought for my teen at the same price from Telstra deal. He liked it so much. I'm moving from S20 (broken screen) to A71 (very laggy) to Pixel 7. I hope it is the right choice.

Just wondering if this support dual Sim (esim) and a physical sim?

    • +1

      Yep.

Edit: Sorry misread. Have only tried with 1 eSIM + 1 physical. Apparently the phone supports multiple eSIM, but it depends on if the carrier supports it.

    • +1

I had an eSIM and a phyiscal sim at the same time for a while, and you can choose which sim card to use for call, sms, data, etc. individually

    • +1

I have multiple eSIMs in addition to the physical one, works without issues.

  • For anyone like me wondering if it’s worth buying this after getting the 6a for $399, there’s no significant difference IMO to justify the purchase: https://nanoreview.net/en/phone-compare/google-pixel-7-vs-go…
Also note that the 6a has better battery life.
Great price for someone who wants a Pixel though.

    • +3

No wireless charging on the 6a and 60hz vs 90 is noticeable IF you're coming from these features already it's pretty jarring. I have a pixel stand (got it free) so any non wireless charging phone is out for me. I do agree the 6a is the better option if you just want a great overall budget phone. Remember it won the Mkbhd blind test the other year for photos! It's a solid phone.

      • +1

Interestingly, the 7A just won this years MKBHD blind camera test

    • +1

You could even say pixel 5 is better? Why? Because unlimited HQ photos upload. SD Chipset. Compact design and battery life is better both phones heh

  • -2

it's an Oct 2022 release phone , only update will be android 14 and it's $500, what's the killer value unless you need a phone today ? Pixel 8 will get 8 years of updates, the pixel 7 won't how quickly do you need a phone ?

    • +1

Yeah but it's almost half the price of recent pixel 8 deals. It makes it easier to justify upgrading in 3 years time, in which case the updates don't matter so much.

      • Cool, if people need a phone and see it as a 3 year investment … I buy mid tier and upgrade every 2 years so I get the idea of not wanting big investments. An considering as an upgrade from my 2 year old oppo actually but have android 13 already.

        • Which phone do you use if you don't mind asking that allows you to switch every 2 years?

        • Updates until October 2027 is longer than 3 years. This isn’t Motorola.

        • I say this, but I only just bought a pixel 7, upgrading from a pixel 3 I bought exactly 4 years ago (also for $500 coincidentally)

    • +2

Guaranteed Android version updates until at least: October 2025. Guaranteed security updates until at least: October 2027. Source

      • Not quite 5 years of updates remaining, not bad really.

  • Thanks Op. Snow OOS, ordered obsidian.

  • So tempting, even though I hated pixel 6. Need to upgrade family member from a failing Samsung s20fe. But this doesn't have microSD, massive bummer. Though, priced at 499 (or 629), it does take the sting out of paying for a recurring non Ukraine sub of Google one… :/

  • Can't stand the battery life of my s22, is it worth switching over?

    • Have you tried battery saver?

      • Yeah, still sucks.

    • -1

I’d been a Samsung user for most my life.
If you’re used to the Samsung UI you’ll struggle. Go with another Samsung. There many features missing if you’re a GoodLock user, when I went from S21 FE to Pixel 7:
      - Notification bar fits only 4 toggles and drop down will show 8 then you have to scroll right
      - No one hand operation+
      - Samsung keyboard faster than Gboard
      - UI is not as fluid as Samsung (90hz screen but often dips below 90 during animations)
      - Build quality is pretty low, google is not known for hardware. Shite fingerprint scanner to start with

      • Thanks so much! Will stick with the Samsung :)

  • -1

Not dissing the deal but I wonder if some might consider the Samsung Galaxy S23FE at $644?

That price does require a trade in. For me its a $5 trade in value which triggers their $250 trade in bonus, plus the current $100 off deal, making the 23FE $644? Faster processor, released late 2023, similar camera specs, reportedly a good battery.

  • Do note that you will get a credit check for this.

  • What are the popular covers and screen protectors?

    • +2

I bought SPIGEN case from eBay. It can hold 1 card too. Pretty tough

    • +1

I got this case about 6 months ago and it's holding up well
      https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0BCWBVZ1Z?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_s…

    • +1

I don't take that many pictures so thought it was worth protecting the camera lens from dirt and scratches until I needed to use it. Picked up the Nillkin Case with camera slide and very happy with it - well made case offering good protection at a cheaper price ($19) than my last Spigen case.

    • +1

screen protector: I got mine done from the TeleChoice kiosks. Be warned of other screen protectors from cheaper places since they appear smaller than the screen. One from TeleChoice seemed a good fit.

For case/cover: I got this which seems pretty good: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0BCL5G3GF

  • I priced match with Optus during last deal. Initially they charge full amount and then refund 50% in 2 weeks. Someone at Optus messed up. I raised case with TIO and was refunded $990. So I got 256GB for just around $150

    • How would this work if claiming TRS?

      • Invoice is for full amount.

        • So in practice you could receive twice the GST back. But legally??

  • +1

How Pixel 7 compared to Pixel 8?

    • +18

      It's one pixel less

    • -1

Enter those words into Google or Chat GPT

    • pixel 8 will get 8 years of updates, so unless you crack the screen it will only need battery replacement …

  • looks good

  • Just got the order confirmation followed by backorder notification.

    • +1

This was a big problem with the last Pixel deal @ Telstra. It said the phone was in stock when it actually wasn't so I imagine there will be a fair few people in this position.

      • +3

Happened to me with the phone and the buds. Ended up paying full price with JB and Telstra refunded me what I paid them and gave me the difference extra.
Only buy with telstra if you're happy to wait a long long time to get the item I've learnt now.

  • +4

if you're browsing around online looking for competing deals, this Samsung S25 5g $499 from the future, listed on JB Hi-Fi is not it.

    MODEL: SM-A256EZKDXSA_11901315521 = Samsung A25

    edit: jb fixed it :)

  • +1

My daily driver, not a good experience. Significant downgrade from S10 5G.

Poor reception, poor screen, horrible audio on both wired and Bluetooth esp Bluetooth, horrible battery life, doesn't register touch properly at times. No 3.5mm, small screen.

Overall it's an average phone and guess okay for the price and being a flagship. My first and last pixel.

My next will be back to a Samsung.

    • Pixel 7 is not a good phone. Pixel 8 is better, but it's not for gaming at all

  • Dam it all. I just bought the Pixel 6a last week, should I return it and buy this?

    • +2

No, just be happy with the 6a as almost same phone and not worth all the hassle, unless you have time to burn.

    • I have already mentioned this.
Look at the comment before my last one.

  • 10x, ordered one.
Even tho my 3.5y/o Poco F2 Pro still works well, apparently it is not to receive any more updates from Xiaomi.
Never had a Pixel device … will see how it goes …

  • Get this or wait for Motorola 30 ultra to drop price
