"Food in Business Class from KL to Xiamen was really not reflective of price you paid, can say worse than any food you get in a local Malaysian coffeeshop." 😲

    • varied experience. Most airline vloggers (incl. Sanspotter) said it was their favourite Chinese airline. Also you are getting a flatbed for 48 hours there and back, seriously can't complain, how bad can it be?

Most airline vloggers (incl. Sanspotter) said it was their favourite Chinese airline.

Of course they would, they got free flights to say that…

        • No one lies on the internet…

        • Lol it's pretty easy to tell between the free flights vloggers (Sam Chui) and the ones who pay themselves (Sanspotter, Josh Cahill etc.). Suggest you educate yourself before making comments on stuff you don't know about.

            Suggest you educate yourself

            I have…

I suggest you become a bit less gullible to what the vloggers claim.

            • @jv: tell me how Josh Cahill who was banned from Qatar airways for criticising them is supposedly getting "free flights" from Qatar. Not sure that's very good media…..

I'd rather believe OMAAT more as i've flown some of the airlines he's reviewed and his reviews are generally spot on.

Suffice to say, he does agree with your other link (provided you get the 787 plane), just thought I'd give another link for others:

How much is the same flights direct with the airline

    • Yep always book direct with the airline

    • +1

      $100 more so not much

  • Never experienced business class but is it really worth double the economy price? I understand some people use their points to book business tickets but I'm referring to paying the ticket outright. This is a genuine question btw. Can someone help me understand please?

    • +3

My experience is no, I always set an internal budget or at least a way to reduce my cost when travelling overseas.

The biggest blowout of any budget is spending excessively on a flight. The experience for me is not the most comfortable in economy, however, I much prefer having the additional funds available on the trip, which I would’ve alternatively spent in paying additionally for business class. I can suck it up for a few hours in economy for an overall much better experience. I guess if you have the funds and funds are not an issue, then I understand why business class is a better option. Quite a few people attest to using business class because they find that there is less downtime in recovering from an economy flight. I myself, don’t think this is really an issue.

      • My experience is no

I appreciate your opinion, but from what i've found - yes it does make a difference. Especially longer flights to Europe/USA - it has absolutely saved my trip with reducing jetlag, allowing me to sleep, allowing me to comfortably travel. It makes the overall trip so much better when you arrive comfortably, or even depart comfortably (or both). I'm also tall so my knees suffer on long haul econ - I get not everyone has this issue.

What I can say it is less of a difference when travelling 8 hours or less. Anything more than that, it's an absolute must for me now - though it does depend on the airline. I feel a Singapore airlines flight for $4.5k will go much further than a Xiamen Airlines flight for $4k, but $4k isn't terrible.

It really depend on you mostly.
I had no issues travelling in the cattle class for many many years since my 20s till my mid 40s. I could last longer but once you tried business you really don't want to go back (for long haul flights).
If you are young (and no health issues), I would not do it.
If you suffer after long haul flights, or you have something important the same or next day of your arrival, then paying double is just a great price!
You will arrive rested and will actually enjoy the flight, as oppose to pure survival.
Normally you would pay around 6 times of the economy ticket price for the privilege.

      • Thank you for the insight. Sounds like it really is worth it for long haul flights

    • +2

I would pay double international economy prices to get business class every day of the week.

Business class = you get to your destination relaxed and pampered. You can then start your holiday immediately and on a refreshed/good note. But only for rich people.

Economo/pleb class = packed like sardines with people farting and coughing on you. You need 1 day after the flight to re-energise and cleanse yourself.

Been fortunate enough to have flown in all cabin classes. In my opinion if paying cash for business class, best do it with top tier airline.

    • Yeah but that's $8-10k

      • Depends on the route. you can get Emirates 1st to NZ sometimes from $800ish one way.

        Edit: Forgot context was Europe.

        • yes, for 3 hours only…

    • +1

depending on the price. However many of the "top tier" airlines have the exact same seat as say Xiamen airlines. For example the reverse herringbone configuration which is on Xiamen 787 is on I'd say 50% of the business class being flown out there including some Etihad and Qatar planes. Yes you pay for the cabin service as well, but is it really worth 2x the cost of Xiamen? I.e $8k-$10k to europe instead of $4-5k return. The main selling point of business is to be able to get some sleep and lie flat in my opinion which will allow you to arrive to destination refreshed.

  • Not all business class products are created equal…. do your research

E.g. I don't believe you can can't compare Xiamen to say, Etihad or Singapore business class products (on any of the A380, A350, B787) with this …. does Xiamen airline provide Lobster Thermidor for a meal option?

I've also never paid $9k (for 2x ppl) to "Gotogate" before as assuming people are not going to travel alone, so IMO if you are paying that much anyway, you are better off paying $1-2k more and paying direct to a reputable source (e.g. airline direct or a travel agent).

    Xiamen
    https://www.sanspotter.com/xiamen-airlines-business-class-re…

Qatar (one of the worlds best consistently rated)
    https://www.executivetraveller.com/review-qatar-airways-a350…

    • I found the Lobster Thermidor to be pretty ordinary, but Singapore Airlines business service is just fantastic.

    • Etihad has been going downhill recently. Also I prefer Xiamen reverse herringbone to Singapore airlines a380/a350 business. I flew singapore recently back from London on a380 in business and couldn't sleep as the seats are too cramped where your feet go in lie flat position. Especially if Xiamen is half the price of Singapore as well…

    • The link in OP shows that it is US$115 more to book direct with airline.

I agree that business class varies, but this is a 787 so it's far from Qantas business class to NZ. But if the aim is to sleep well and arrive well rested, I don't know if the lobster is really worth the thousands extra (link shows it's US$1.8k extra for Cathay and double the price for Qatar).

  • Anyone find any dates on March with April or early May return? Or any dates at all?
