[Resolved] Can't Get a Job

I applied for like 30+ jobs. I even applied to KFC. I got an interview and got promptly rejected (lmao). They sent the email less than an hour after the interview. Also got rejected from Coles interview.

I've got nothing to put on my resume. Literally nothing (don't know what an 18 year old would have though). I'm an awful student (65 Atar), so I can't do tutoring. Never had work experience before. I don't have friends or family who can refer me. I'm not athletic at all and have a weak build. My character is pretty bad TBH. My "community" also isn't very helpful, as I went over the the mall and asked them for a job. There is literally nothing going for me.

Some people have told me volunteering. But quite frankly, I don't care about helping people, nor do I feel any satisfaction for it. I just want money.

Part time jobs would rather hire 14 year olds who they can underpay or older people who are more flexible with their times. And the shitty government doesn't give assistance for a job until I'm 21 and on the hook for Centrelink.

I don't understand the song and dance around applying for a minimum wage. YES I'M APPLYING FOR A MINIMUM WAGE, WAGE JOB. NO, I DON'T WANT TO STAY FOREVER. NO, THE JOB DOENS'T GIVE ME PRIDE.

I'm begging you. If you have a job at 7/11 or a some type of cornerstone clerk, please give me advice.

EDIT: I'll be entering uni in 2024. I want a part time job not a career

@Degeneracy: Because maybe if you presented yourself in a more favourable light here, people would actually be willing to give you a job. But because you come across as an incel who is lazy and lacks ambition, yet expects a job on a silver platter, no one's willing to give you the chance.

                                • @kerfuffle: Didn't I already say i given up a while ago. I just came to rant, because my friends don't exist anymore

@Degeneracy: At the rate you're going, you won't be making any new ones at uni either.

                                    • @kerfuffle: I know I won't. I prefer talking online on forums than interacting with people irl.

You're not doing a great job at that either. You've been given heaps of great advice here, yet you dismissed most of them.

                                        • @kerfuffle: Answers all followed these guidlines

                                          1. Volunteer for 2 months, then see if your luck is better. I've gone into this
                                          2. Act like a 12 year old and wash cars. That aint gonna work. They can just go to a carwash area in the petrol station and do it for cheaper, and not risk some shady kid knowing their addess. Also 15 dollars here and there isn't worth my time
                                          3. Uber. I don't have a car or licence

None of these are helping. Only helpful comments I found is the guy who told me to make stuff up on the resume, and the guy who told me to work workdays in uni

@Degeneracy: And you can't afford to be picky if you want money. You have to start somewhere. We all did.

They are helpful suggestions that were given to you; you just choose not to help yourself.

                  • @Degeneracy: $600 / week is not minimum wage in most parts of the world. In some parts people would kill for that type of money.

Maybe you could try for a minimum wage job in SE Asia $5 - $10 / day to better align with your expectations.

My son managed to get a job at KFC as well as a couple of other jobs while he's doing uni. He's not 14, but he doesn't have a shithouse attitude, so that may help.

Why not work on your attitude, do a Tafe course, an apprenticeship etc?

Your same attitude issues will prevent you from getting a job where this matters also.

Is tead of just a person with a terrible attitude now, you'll just be a person with a terrible attitude, self entitled view thinking you're above entry level jobs, and a HECS debt.

              • @Degeneracy: No you're not. ever.

@Degeneracy: If you think this is hard, wait until later in life. You've been given plenty of advice, but bar one comment, all you've done is whinge and moan. Once again, it comes down to your attitude. You sound like an incel, but instead of women, it's jobs. You don't sound deserving of a job, yet you bitch that one should be handed to you on a silver platter.

            • @kerfuffle: Okay. I'm (profanity).

What do you want me to do? I don't have time to study in uni and time to study for a MINIMUM WAGE JOB! No one (profanity) studies for a minimum wage job.

@Degeneracy: Which Mickey Mouse uni lets kids with 65 ATAR in for Comp Science? The maths involved there is far beyond anyone who got Band 4s in STEM subjects can handle. Sounds like a uni looking to make money on fees and don't really care about pass rate/ alumni reputation…

                • @Papa Huggies: WSU. I got Band 5/E3 for Extension/Advanced Math external. My shitty cohort brought me down

                  • @Degeneracy: Did you flunk your other subjects or something then? B5 on a good scaling subject would generally get someone an 80+ ATAR.

                    • @Papa Huggies: Haha this is funny.

I got a low band 4 internal low band 5 external and got a band 4 internal for adv math.

for extension low band e3 external high E2 internal.

For English I got a low band 3. Shitty subject. I hated it so much. I actually sort of tried for this one.

For the rest Eco/Buisness/physics, i got high band 2/low band 3 internaland a low band 4/mid band 4 external.

ITotally deserve that band 2 internal for eco though. Because I never studied for the tests, and spent most the time napping.

@Degeneracy: I think you gotta get off the /r/antiwork circlejerk. Although its true minimum wage isn't worth more than minimum effort, its the unspoken truth we keep unspoken if we want a job, because all it takes is for one person to put in more effort and present better than you to get the job.

Also, best not to complain about the rest of your class - it was outside of your control.

Actually it was within your control in Year 4 (OC class) and Year 6 (Selective School). After that there's nothing for you to do about it.

                • @Papa Huggies: the maths really depends on which uni you go to.
some uni's don't force first year maths for comp science, apart from the essential discrete.

Uni's with less demand essentially have to let people in, besides a 65 atar does not necessarily correlate with bad uni grades

                  • @Synapse29: There's a strong correlation between ATAR and uni grades. It's not a surefire 1:1 relationship by any means but it's a very good indicator.

                    • @Papa Huggies: Good indicator but never let that get in the way of things.

                      • +2

@Synapse29: Yeah but the difference is generally in a student's ability to apply themselves to something they're interested in vs what they're forced to study (eg. English 2U), their resourcefulness as an adult in a university, self-accountability and their work ethic. I don't know enough about OP to speak on any of these qualities but considering how they go about this forum I wouldn't pen them as a likely star student.

              • @Degeneracy: You're portraying yourself as the absolute bottom of the barrel. In fact, it feels like taking you on would end up being more effort to the employer than you would give back to them. And you're competing against others who are willing to show at least just a little bit more effort than you. If an employer had a choice between you and someone else who was exactly the same but just 0.1% better (and they do), why would they go with you?

                • @bajillionaire: Exactly. There will always be someone better to hire than me. That's why I'm (profanity)

              • +6

@Degeneracy: "MINIMUM WAGE MEANS MINUMUM EFFORT"
This is your problem. Minimum wage does not mean minimum effort at all, it's minimum skill. I wouldn't pay someone lots of money to flip burgers because just about anyone can learn how to do it overnight. I have friends who have/had worked in fast food and during busy times, it's far from minimum effort to keep up with the orders coming in. It doesn't matter if the applicant that beat you got an ATAR of 60 and is dumber than you, because they don't need to be smarter to do the job, they need to be willing to work hard. You aren't.

          • @Degeneracy: If you are done you can end the thread.

            • @drfuzzy: Yeah this is going no where. Where is the option to end the thread?

      • +5

Let my try and break it down a bit for you:

no one would hire me over a 14 year old they can underpay or some poor international student.

Sometimes 14 year olds are too young for certain jobs so don’t get disheartened on that. You’d still be cheaper than a 21 year old and probably more available than a school kid.

how someone could care about flipping burgers or cleaning piss. Like who cares?

Some people get into McDonald’s just to pay bills or earn some money. Even when you are doing it for just money, what is McDonald’s actually giving you? The opportunity to develop soft skills like confidence, team work, organisation, prioritisation, pacing yourself, dealing with complaints (learning how shit customers can be), conflict resolution (getting other people to do what you want), in addition to other skills like cleaning, stock rotation, floor management if you get to manager etc…

I’ve never worked at maccas but worked at a coffee shop and a flower farm during uni. I did a bachelor of business/IT and met my future boss during my degree who I worked with for 4 years.

Why would anyone care about making some billionaire richer

No one cares about that. If you’re working for maccas you’re working for a franchisee I think who may not even be making a million… it’s about your determination and drive to succeed yourself. Do you want to travel? Move out of home? Buy a home? Then you have to drop any of the existential thoughts you have about everyone else who gets a minimum wage job and focus on doing what you need to do to get money to pay for things you want.

Just focus on what’s right in front of you: a gate (interviewer) that you have to do a series of known steps to knock down (apply/interview) to get into something… treat it as a challenge and adjust your strategy based on what didn’t work and what did…. And why do you think you should have to do that for basic jobs???? Because that in itself is a skill that will help you get a high paying job later…

I have been promoted multiple times in every job I’ve been in and because I haven’t interviewed much I STILL find it extremely stressful to apply elsewhere

      • +6

Hmm you seem really angry in general, and the way you describe yourself is pretty awful too. You seem pretty entitled to a minimum wage job but those jobs still have standards you need to meet. And I don't think you have the skills to meet those standards right now, not with all that anger and terrible self-esteem holding you back. You might want to start with going to your GP, or if that seems like too much, doing a free online program like Mood Gym or getting some therapy online.

  • +5

Go down the street, put flyers in mailboxes or knock on doors. Offer to pull weeds, mow lawns, clean gutters, wash windows, walk dogs.
You'll make cash in hand and who knows, maybe you'll meet a sugar-momma.

    • +13

Willing to bet that the OP considers all those beneath him.

        • +1

Your hope was wasted. Told you he considers it beneath him.

Your attitude comes across as 12, not 18

      • +4

You haven't done the math. How long would it take you to wash a car? How much is that worth? Even $10/car and 20mins that's $30/hour. CASH.

        • +5

If he has never had a job he might not realise how much income tax is taken out of his pay.

          • @Sammy2000: At 18 with minimum wage ($30k), he'd only be losing ~6% of pay to income tax, so cash in hand isn't worth the effort

        • From what I read, wouldn't be capable of that level of maths anyway

      • +5

It’s side gig money, but some people do make it full time! Esp NDIS etc

  • -2

Yeah, country is kinda stuffed. A crappy job should be the easiest thing in the world to get, but it's not. You're almost better off doing your own thing for money at your age, but you still need funds to get started. Definitely focus on getting your license, as a car will open up a lot of opportunities.

      • +3

Agree - license will help a shittonne but as below, get a rsa/rcg - go try to get a job at a casino if there is one close. Even if not close, the perks are usually worth it due to the union eg meals paid for, public transport paid for. A job agency will pay for the training re rca/rcg

      • +1

Yeah.. character doesn't mean much. Employers are generally stingy scumbags who care even less about things like volunteer work than you do. All they want is someone they can turn around and pimp out for profit, with as little effort as possible. I'm sure you know this already, but you'll discover the true depths of it later in life as you go along. I've seen nurses who were nice and helpful get kicked to the side the moment they lost their usefulness. You (or I) really are nothing but a boost sim pack with bonus cashback to them.

It's not all hopeless though. The silver lining is that people are often pretty stupid, even if they have money, so it's not too hard to find ways around their bullshit. But no matter what you do its gonna take work. Not hard work exactly, but the effort does need to be consistent. In other words its not something you can knock out over a weekend.

      • Finally you found someone who agrees with you! Only took most of the thread! Does that tell you anything?

        • Yeah. It tells me there are a bunch of 30+ year old people on this forum

          • @Degeneracy: And one whinger i.e. you

          • +4

@Degeneracy: People with jobs who clearly know nothing about how to get one and keep it lol

@WhyAmICommenting: Minimum wage jobs, and actual careers are very different.

              • +4

@Degeneracy: Yep, min wage can be a stepping stone but you’ll be stuck there if you only put in minimum effort.

Plenty of people basically work minimum wage for life.

@WhyAmICommenting: I'm just gonna skip the step honestly. I'm (profanity). No way i can compete with 14 year olds and people who actually give a shit(which I am unpleasantly surprised to discover is many)

          • +4

@Degeneracy: We were once hormonal arrogant and entitled turds too. We just grew out of it and wish we listened and did more and said less…especially from "they have no idea how hard my life is, so get off my back!" people.

Seriously consider Army reserves. You'll come out of it as someone you can be proud of. Strong, mentally and physically. Competent and the confidence that goes with it. You'll make friends and have a better idea of what you want to do in the future. I think that will be good for you, because you're a lost soul and you need to turn your life around because you sound like you're not going to survive 10 years like this.

    • Why should it be easy to get?

  • +4

The easiest job you can get is working out in the back at a local butcher, they will pay cash, it’ll be shit.
    That’s a starting point.
Meat processing will almost take anyone, if you really like it, join your union and agitate for better wages with the floor on moving to a bigger plant.
    OR
Then get your RSA/RCG and move on to pubs and clubs.
A bottle shop is much better if you can land it but likely less hours.
After that attempt to move to non qualification required government roles.
Because they will see you deal with people and that’s mostly what’s going required and they literally just need people to pick up the phones.
Then you are on your way to bullshit a resume, built from the school of actual work.
    Good luck!

I reckon he considers butchery work as beneath him.

Free gym picking up tubs of meat or cartons, it’s a win win. It’s a living

I totally agree. But you wait and see; he’ll say it’s too smelly and dirty
