[Resolved] Can't Get a Job

I applied for like 30+ jobs. I even applied to KFC. I got an interview and got promptly rejected (lmao). They sent the email less than an hour after the interview. Also got rejected from Coles interview.

I've got nothing to put on my resume. Literally nothing (don't know what an 18 year old would have though). I'm an awful student (65 Atar), so I can't do tutoring. Never had work experience before. I don't have friends or family who can refer me. I'm not athletic at all and have a weak build. My character is pretty bad TBH. My "community" also isn't very helpful, as I went over the the mall and asked them for a job. There is literally nothing going for me.

Some people have told me volunteering. But quite frankly, I don't care about helping people, nor do I feel any satisfaction for it. I just want money.

Part time jobs would rather hire 14 year olds who they can underpay or older people who are more flexible with their times. And the shitty government doesn't give assistance for a job until I'm 21 and on the hook for Centrelink.

I don't understand the song and dance around applying for a minimum wage. YES I'M APPLYING FOR A MINIMUM WAGE, WAGE JOB. NO, I DON'T WANT TO STAY FOREVER. NO, THE JOB DOENS'T GIVE ME PRIDE.

I'm begging you. If you have a job at 7/11 or a some type of cornerstone clerk, please give me advice.

EDIT: I'll be entering uni in 2024. I want a part time job not a career

      • I'm not a uni student though. I'm in between uni and high school. I'm enrolled now though

Heads up for you - I didn’t work hard at uni (Bach IT) so ended up starting in call centres. Those who applied themselves to uni got a way better start and are probably still ahead.

          • @WhyAmICommenting: I do intend to try in uni. I got decent math marks, so I think I can make it good

            • +1

@Degeneracy: I tried. Studied a bit here and there and before exams. But it wasn’t enough. Spent most of my time playing games lol. So there’s a price to pay for that.

Yo dawg just chiming in to say this is some internet doomcult bullshit. You’re just average like the rest of us and you’re young, it takes time to grow into the man you will become. Keep your head up and keep trying and do some volunteering ya ratbag.

  • You're very well-spoken and articulate.

Go for cleaning jobs. Plenty of them that require no experience and shifts suit uni students

    • +5

Cleaning is beneath the OP so he'll proclaim.

    • +3

      Cleaning also requires effort.

  • +9

The best outcome for this thread is we all find out that OP is actually a parent trolling their 18yo child. Parent is trying to show what people say about a 18yo who has no technical or social skills, and possibly not wanting or aiming to develop any.

You need a reality check unfortunately for you going by your attitude this won’t happen until you are in your 30s.

  • Just find yourself a rock n roll band that needs a helping hand….

Why don't you try for an apprenticeship? Are there any trades you are interested in learning?

  • +9

If it makes you feel any better.

    I wouldn't hire you either.

You've pointed out your flaws - now work on rectifying them.

  • +4

If your post is indicative of how you interview I would say you have about as much chance as a snowflake in hell of anyone ever hiring you.

  • +3

Is this a troll post? You know the why can’t a job and know how to change that.

You have (profanity) all skills, (profanity) all ambition and a god awful attitude that tries to excuses your self admitted god awful personality. You know how others like you make it through life? The answer is they don’t or they change who they are or they get good enough at faking it. Most people would rather work with someone who subpar at the job than someone who was just an all around unpleasant individual.

You want a job? Change your attitude at a minimum and I’d also recommend trying grow as an individual so you’re less of a “degenerate”. failing that at-least change how other people perceive you aka lie and fake it. You don’t do either you’re always going to struggle to get even the most basic of jobs whether you have experience or not.

  • Best troll post of the year so far and he/she is now off to troll somewhere else :-)

    • The sad thing is that it's not a troll post. There are so many people who genuinely think like this

  • +4

I'll try to keep this response constructive.

OP, take this opportunity to work on yourself. You're making it out that the world is at fault when your post and replies suggest it's more a 'you' thing. You've got friends that can get jobs and clearly KFC (as example) does hire locals, not only immigrants (as an extreme), such that the notion that those places only hire a 'certain' type of person is false.

I see a lot of junior staff, newly graduates, etc come through the system and I'd say only 1 - 2% are now are of the mindset 'here's what I can offer you', where the majority are 'what's in it for me(?)'. Your outlook definitely reads as the latter which is likely to creep through at interviews no matter how hard you try cover it up.

Employers nowadays do need to account for this mentality, but as you've noticed, there's not necessarily a shortage of staff options such that most won't choose that challenge when potentially less challenging candidates exist.

Would you hire you? Work on what you the areas you would find a challenge (for you) if you were to hire yourself.

  • +3

There is just no way that this post and the subsequent comments are real.

  • +2

Consider doing your Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

This will definitely help you. It is also supported by employers. There used to be an agreement, it could still be around where if two people applied for a job where one has DOE and the other doesn't, certain businesses have agreed to take the DOE candidate first.

Have you considered call centre work?

  • +3

Wah wah wah. Typical entitled Uni kid attitude.

Clearly you think the world owes you free stuff cause all you did was cry on a forum.

Genuinely hope you are a troll as with this approach you won't qualify for even shit-kicker jobs as evident by your lack of a job.

  • +4

After seeing your post and comments, I'm somewhat relieved that you haven't been able to get a job at those places you've applied.

  • +1

    You gave up at 30?

    • +1

I applied for at least a hundred before I had success. Ended up getting a job in a local factory via Kickstarter (I reached out to the project creator and seemed overall enthused about working)

So… my future taxes will be paying for this guy?

  • +7

I left school in year 10, didn’t complete VCE, worked at McDonald’s, did a computer tafe course, worked for a small IT business for almost 7 years, went to uni as a mature age student for a year, did some Microsoft certifications then worked at a large consultancy, accumulated over 7 Microsoft certifications, went back to uni again to develop skills in executive management and ensure my career is growing. However, I’m now accountable for cloud infrastructure across the whole eastern seaboard of Australia.

    • The problem is not KFC - It’s you.
    • Where do you want to be when you’re 25, 30, 40?
    • Look at your peers.. what do they do? What influences do they have upon you? If there are more cons then pros, get rid of them.
    • Do you game? If so how often? If more than 4 hours per day, imagine what you could be learning during that time.
    • Money is not happiness, yes it definitely buys things to make you happy, but how will you gain long term happiness? When you begin to set goals and achieve them, you will want more. Money will naturally come if you set your goals towards it.

Dont answer these questions here, but ask / answer to yourself.

You can achieve anything you want, but don’t think it will come to you (unless your family is rich and you essentially get handed everything to you)

ATAR score has no bearing on your ability to obtain a job that is unrelated to higher education (i.e., hospitality). I would suggest that you look in the mirror and perhaps review if you have any underlying personality 'traits' that is causing you to fail the interviews.

When hiring staff without experience, the only thing I can judge them on is personality (i.e., are you a psycho, will you work well with the existing team, etc).

    Good luck OP.

  • +2

Ive done some awlful jobs in the past but you still have to do your best its called pride in your work. If you have to shovel sh&t you do the best you can and dont whinge about it.

  • Like many in this post, I can see why you're not getting hired - as much as everyone wants to get paid, walking into applying for a job is a whole bunch of finding out what other reasons why you'd be a decent employee, especially getting along with the manager who's most likely interviewing you.

Apply for everything and anything - I applied for about 200 jobs when I was looking and the only one I eventually got was via a training they happened to offer. Also, don't underestimate short courses and the variety of volunteering jobs - I learnt quite a lot when I was a database volunteer for the Red Cross.

Also, don't knock hospitality or retail jobs - they're the two that will teach you the most about dealing with people and how much patience you have for others.

I know what's wrong, you've been applying for Australian jobs but you're based in the US (since you used the word 'mall')

I'd suggest applying for US jobs, it'd suit you quite nicely :)

  • +3

Do you actually give a shit about making your boss richer? Do you really care about making the multimilllionaire/billionaire at the top richer? Because that's all we are. If you think you're part of a team, if you think you're important you're not. We're all expendable.

And I'm the (profanity) for seeing through this. I just want money. I don't care about working. I really don't. I just want money, so I can buy food and buy VIDEO GAMES!!!

You do not need a job, especially if you are just going to buy food and video games, as you can just become a permanent welfare recipient.

I am not sure what they did to the welfare system, but the Newstart equivalent is now only available for those above 22 years ago when a majority of people previously were getting that higher rate once they turned 18.

    Anyway

Why have you given up on this system? Is it because your parents does not own their home, no inheritance in waiting, need to take care of your parents in old age, and well you basically have nothing? Well, yeah, if I were you, then I would probably just give up too.

I too had nothing when I was 18; I thought about calling it quits in my early days, but I managed to build my empire. I had what you call the brains, but maybe you have what they street smarts.

You are here playing this large video game called real life. If you got dealt bad hands, but you still need to play and if you are deciding on your path the way you have, there is nothing more I can say. You are optimising what the world dealt you and unlike others on Ozbargain I will not judge you.

If what I wrote above does not apply to you, then how about you decide on changing your mindset. Maybe you should change because you could definitely be an employer or upper management type of person. You first need to create something valuable to society which ensures you are not expendable, again that is not easy, but if you don't want to truly give up yet then that should be your goal.

Don't focus on applying for a job to KFC and 7/11, you are just fooling yourself by doing that.

Why are you doing computer science? Are you just completing that course to waste time because would you not rather be playing video games instead of going to university? I need to know your exact mindset. Clearly you are not totally beyond saving.

What are they teaching people in the public education system these days that allows them to churn out these graduates?

Furthermore, you don't need to do Computer Science to get into IT. In fact I would classify it an impediment because of all the crappy programming principles that the engineering courses seem to instill into their students. From my own experience you need to spend at least a year just retraining the engineers before they can be productive. If I hire a math graduate I don't see the same kind of crazy code that an engineer does. It also shows in the poor quality of coding from Australians, aka Medibank, Woolworths, Optus, Commbank events, although I do suspect a lot of those are produced by offshore candidates (457/482 visa. lol.) that ironically probably also completed some copy of some poor quality engineering course they cloned from MIT.

  • +5

Its people like you that make Centrelink support impossible for people that actually deserve it.

    • 100%

    • +2

You could argue the system is actually designed exactly for these people, as it could be classified as a disability. I am still trying to figure out if DSP is the best way for the OP, or if he can still be saved some other way.

He clearly might have something such as Antisocial personality disorder.

No offence, I would rather my taxpayer dollars keep him happy rather than have someone desperate running around knifing and shooting people just so they can get food. That is how the system is setup, to keep the majority safe.

I pay a lot of tax and would rather not meet my demise due to something the government has done that radicalises the youth. I'm surprised the welfare system has been destroyed recently. (removed political reference).

  • +2

Can't do anything but shake my head in shock!

Looks like you wanna be paid because you exist.

Finally - a government policy that works!

    "

I'm wondering if this is a troll post as there are so many negative statements there - are you just looking for sympathy, as I don't see any positive ambition or intention to work - 'just want money' - so I guess you're staying home waiting for the next Centrelink payment - right ?

    • -1

I'm 18. I wish I got centrelink. Just ranting honestly. I gave up on getting a job

  • Try for laboring jobs, you don't need a resume, work history or any skills really. You don't need to be strong or athletic either.

Just be capable of showing up on time and following simple instructions. ie, 'move that pile of stuff from here to over there' etc

  • I get it,you're 18,in your first year of uni and probably pretty disillusioned with job hunting. It sounds like you might have other things going on as well.
There's not point criticising your attitude or your aspirations, those things change for most people as their circumstances permit it.

It also needs to be said that most people dont bring anything close to their authentic self to a job interview, prepare examples ahead of time if you need to. You dont need to pretend that you desperately want the job or that it's your passion but you do need to act like you would actually like to work there (for work experience, because you like their products, because it fits around your schedule..etc).

I think for now focus on doing what you need to get a job, which will help you for future interviews. My first job was as a junk mail delivery person and I dumped that gig as soon as I had something else. It was paid on a "per 100 households delivered" basis and pretty chill. You just walk around listening to music and dump mail in letterboxes.

Something else you can do in your own time are paid surveys/data annotation & labelling. Pretty easy to grind out and quite a lot of companies are hiring for the latter.

  • Could also join the army, which might help improve your character and give you a bit of direction in life too. You might even like it.

    • +3

The Army definitely doesn’t need people like him, I’ll only say that much

      • It would be good if it was a 100 years ago or something, when they could spank people.

  • Initial presentation is in my opinion vital. First impressions count a lot.
when I interviewed a prospective employee, I noted how much the individual had made an effort to be neat and tidy. Combed hair, possibly collared shirt, clean trousers and feet with sneakers or shoes.
An applicant with unkempt hair, T shirt with inappropriate logo, jeans with no knees and flip-flops went straight to the bottom of the pile,

  • +5

I would never hire OP for anything. I’ve worked shitty jobs but I have always taken pride in what I’ve done. I can guarantee that OP would do not even bare minimum.

  • +6

This reeks of a troll post

    • At least he’s not hurting anyone else. I should sue the liberals for the impact of the sh!tty NBN on my mental health and productivity.

      • At least he’s not hurting anyone else.

        Who isn't?

  • 10 bazillion cleaning jobs going, but OP probably thinks those roles are 'below' them. Basic work with next to no human interaction.

  • Youth unemployment rates are always pretty high, so there's a large group in competition. With a little effort you can stand out from the crowd but with poor attitude you will stand out for the wrong reasons and ruin any chance.

Definitely seems like a troll post though.

  • +2

This is a blatant troll post, why are people when engaging with him?

    • There's no way a troll could be this convincing

  • I think an attitude check is in order.

Else Ubereats or Uber doesn't discriminate.

  • My advice would be to sign up with a temp agency. That's what I did when I was in a similar sitation to you - general unskilled office work. My 3rd temp assignment ended with the company offering me a permanent position.

  • Re-do your resume.

Include babysitting, car washing, lawn mowing, and house cleaning.
(It is okay to exaggerate a bit. For example if you have only mowed your own family's lawn say you have mowed neighbours lawns too).

For education just put down the school and what years you were there. (If, however, you did cooking for a subject, even if just in Year 7, put that down if you are going for food related jobs).

Try doing some short courses at TAFE; look at forklift licence, alcohol certifications, traffic controller.

Try and get an adult to write a reference; a teacher, your doctor, a coach… if none then ask your parent(s) to write you one (This will actually show you have parental support for your job).

    Good luck.

  • I apply for 100 per day.
    Don't give up.

You can always be food delivery driver for the short term

    • That would require OP to get his licence.

  • Just join the ADF as a stepping stone to get a trade

  • +1

OP, I suggest you edit your opening post and mention that you are a Uni student.

Are you a full time uni student?

If so, you are after part-time work; maybe mention that too.

Gotta be a troll post. Someone wanting to show how entitled Gen Z are

    • Yep I agree. That or a magazine article.

  • +4

100% troll post. Easy to get a job…IF u really WANT one, loads of stuff in hospitality/kitchen hand work etc if ur desperate enough and rock up… cash in hand jobs all around.

But agree with spackbace. Troll has articulated the OP as an overly entitled child with a delusional view on reality.

  • +4

Get into a trade. I know a kid who dropped out of school at 14, did nothing until 18 and got into painting. Reason why I think this might actually be a genuine post is because he pretty much had your attitude until he realised he can't do nothing forever.

Straight into an apprenticeship with no prior experience is probably impossible but plenty of tafe or similar courses to get some certifications to get you going.

Edit: didn't see the Uni edit. I'd say make friends with fellow students and tutors and put your name out for part time job opportunities but … uh sounds like that won't be happening.

  • +4

This HAS to be a troll post. Surely…

    • A successful one at that judging by the number of responses.

      • The best trolls are the ones where you are honest

  • +2

Have you considered using the $600 you have to see a shrink? You clearly have some mental issues that need resolving.

  • +3

Even once you've gone to uni and completed your degree, it sounds like you're going to be one of those graduates always moaning about how they can't get an internship or graduate program at a big company. Personality: team fit, professionalism, dedication, etc. are all just as important as your skills and experience.

If you want to undo that trend, then you could start with some unpaid work experience and volunteering to put something on your resume for the casual jobs you're currently applying for, and then during the interviews offer to do an unpaid trial/ shift so you can both determine if it's a good fit.

    • +1

graduates always moaning about how they can't get an internship or graduate program at a big company

Or more moaning about not being able to get a six figure senior manager role straight out uni.

  • There seem to be an ever multiplying number of massage parlours at the moment. I'm sure they could do with an extra hand or two

  • So many unhelpful comments, I reckon just fake your resume by saying to helped mow senior citizens lawns and garden maintenance. You could pick up some volunteer work to spruce up your resume to show commitment to learning new skills etc. I’ve been where you are now, don’t give up on 30 jobs and a few rejections. Keep busy doing something for yourself you will get a job soon, but you need to persevere and be consistent. I thought schools give work experience at 16 years old, if not that’s just sad, coz i did..

    • -4

Year 10 work experience was optional because of covid. But yeah. I'm just gonna fake my resume honestly. Gonna just say that I got high internals I didn't and say I mowed lawns. And if I get caught, I'll just smile and say "worth a shot" and move on to the next job

    • +4

      So many unhelpful comments

There were lots of helpful comments. OP just thought they were above every reasonable suggestion made. Can't help the person if they don't want to help themselves.

      • True, I give up. All the best OP nothing else to say.

  • +1

This post amuses me. If you present in person the same way you present here then you will never get a job. Good luck entitled youngin!

  • Oh boy!

Do you walk straight into the interview and tell them how much you suck, or do you wait until you've sat down?

And do you shout in CAPSLOCK on your resume?

Giving up after applying for 30 jobs is also ridiculous. I suspect you're making excuses and the attitude is you intentionally avoiding getting a job.

    • I don't tell them I suck. Either it's my personality or just my hours. Either way the competiition is too hard

      • +4

        It's definitely your personality.
