"The SmartTag 2 only works with Samsung phones running Android 9.0 and above. It not only requires SmartThings as a companion app, but the app has to be specifically installed on a Samsung phone."

Anyone got a good alternative that works well on pixel?

      • +1

Tile, but I have the replaceable batt models

      • +2

Tile is good, if you're just after the cheapest possible option. It works well, but community coverage is limited because only Tile owners (who install the app) will be able to assist with finding.

I'd probably recommend considering Chipolo - their Point range can leverage a very large proportion of the Android user base since they piggyback on Android's Find my Device network….but it seems they're still in pre-order here?

        https://chipolo.net/en/products/category/chipolo-point

        • +2

Many of us have ordered and then cancelled after Google delayed the Find My Device network launch.

          • @m9: how long are they going to delay it for?

            • @Ezmon: No idea. Went from July to December of last year, and still nothing now.

              • @m9: Damn google get your shit together pls. Chipolo point sounds awesome.

                • +2

@gakko: They are waiting on Apple

                  • @BargainMe: Google are or chipolo et. al. are?

                    • +6

@gakko: Google is waiting on Apple, and Chipolo are waiting on Google.

The issue is allegedly implementing protection against unwanted tracking. The idea is that your phone detects and alerts people when a tracker tag that isn't yours seems to be consistently following you, which suggests you are being stalked.

You may this issue first arose with AirTags a while ago. Apple rolled out anti-stalking protection for iOS users, and soon after Google rolled out a compatible tool to protect Android users who otherwise wouldn't have been alerted.

Now the shoe is on the other foot - Google has implemented anti-stalking protection for Android users using Google's Find my Device network, but it seems Apple is dragging their feet in reciprocating protections for iOS users. Google is reluctant to roll out their tracker network without these protections.

                      • +3

@klaw81: It's annoying that Apple can limit competition dragging their feet, but at the same time, if Google goes without them, it looks bad because you'd have Google devices tracking iOS users in the headlines. Google can't win here.

                        • +3

@TheContact: In this case if i were Google I'd issue a statement saying something along the lines…
We've included stalking protection for Apple trackers and have provided information x months ago for Apple to provide the same protections but apple are yet to respond.
We we have delayed our launch to give apple more time but can not delay the launch indefinitely.
We intend to launch on xx date and we encourage Apple to implement their protections without undue delay.

Then if anything comes of it direct people to this release and point the finger at apple.

Seems unfair that apple unduly dragging their feet can force a company to not be able to launch a product.

                      • @klaw81: Thanks for the write up and it seems very unfortunate that apple should have this leverage over Google. They certainly seem to be using it as expected, given these delays in something they could churn out in a week.

                        • @gakko: It's not leverage, it's business. I'm quite sure the issue isn't as simple as what's been suggested above, and neither is the response or solution to this. The business relationship and legalities might also be playing heavily into the situation, hence the reason why Google is stuck between a rock and a hard place. That's what happens when you work with Apple, either in the corporate world or as a consumer.

Good reason to stop using a Fruit product and switch to Droid on a Sammy! :)
More things… how do i say this…. JUST WORK! hahahah

      • Good reasons are a list of restrictions?

        • Thanks Apple my friend. ha!

  • +5

how is an apple equivalent product cheaper than this? x4 for 125 the other day

    • +7

Apple one featured was a 2-3 year old model and lacks a button (much handier than it seems). Really though most people don't have a choice, you buy into whatever ecosystem you're locked into.

      • What do you need a button for? If you have the AirTag with you what use is a button?

        • Helps find your phone?

I know the Samsung one can have the button set to trigger automation of your choice. E.g. garage/house lights

        • Same reason anything has a button, increases functionality.

        • +1

I've got a toddler, so I've set the button to find my phone. And I have a tag attached to my keys.

It can be programmed to do many things. Some people use it to open their garage doors if it's connected

      • And from reports, Apple have a huge supply of this model which is slowing the release of an updated model.

    • +2

Find the apple equivalent of purchasing x1 as in this deal.

  • Does it also vibrate?

    Skycomp: https://www.skycomp.com.au/samsung-ei-t5600kwegau-smart-tag-… - $111 + shipping

JBHIFI Commercial: $41 / single buy - if you have access to the commercial site

    • good price but i just read that it does not work with iphone, the only reason i dont want the apple airtag is that it notifies a "would be" thief if my luggage has an airtag

      • Time to buy a Galaxy device too? I hear there is some special on at the moment and more coming… :)
        hahaha

  • +6

I recently bought 4 samsung galaxy smarttag2 from Costco. They are not great. There are not enough samsung devices around the place to get regular reliable readings. Tested in Sydney and Hawaii and I think they are a waste of money.

    • +8

Not enough Samsung devices, around Sydney??!

I'd guess that there's a few on every single street in Sydney? Lol.

      • Go ahead and buy the Smarttags then.

    • How does a review like this get downvoted? This is very important. Tile would be a better alternative for those against Apple

    • +3

      Same experience

      • oh yeh i watched a few youtube videos about this, non of these reach the accuracy of apple air tag for the simple fact that there is way more iphone users around who the tag can ping, thats what gives it the pin point accuracy that all other brands lack. i guess there is no other choice for me but to accept the one down fall of the airtag which is it notifies would be luggage thiefs

    • +1

Hmm, the reviews says opposite about samsung network in Sydney
      https://youtu.be/61_L4lO4cUI?si=G_neYewCfBRou2Ny

    • +1

I found travelling to Hawaii/sydney/Japan that there was heaps of reliability in readings when watching our luggage move and stuff?

      • +1

Same here. It was great when travelling abroad.

    • +3

I've got the older version of this, as well as the Apple Airtag

Never had an issue in Australia or internationally.

I've found the Samsung tag to be faster to respond/update and has more functionality in the app, but the reality is both will work fine

    • I bought a bunch of these before our Xmas trips and I was able to follow 1x lost luggage as it was making it's way back to me. I also have thrown 1 in the car and was easily able to get updated locations on it.

  • Can this be used to track vehicles?

    • +5

Yes, and and better response and update rate than the Airtag.

    • That's how I use them and they work fairly well (depending on where the car is and if there are likely to be any people with Samsung phones nearby)

  • -7

Older version of the tag is better because you can enable 'notify when left behind' option in the software. Second generation does not support this

    • +2

It does… you can find the option in the settings

      • -2

We both are actually right. The menu says:

Notify when left behind is only supported on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher.

My Galaxy S20 5G still runs Android 11, and S21..S24 upgrade is not an option for many as it has a significantly lower-resolution screen that is not curved and does not support memory cards.

        • Nice attempted spin, but only you were incorrect here.

  • It says battery life is only 20hrs? Is that really bad? Need to change battery everyday!!

    • +1

Probably an error. Should be 500 days

    • +1

      2 to 3 years.

      • Wow. My smarttags+ only laat 2-3 months

  • +1

Black is one already back to normal price.

Get your white orders in quick!

  • +3

Gotta say, I've got the first version, and they've saved me countless hours looking for keys around the house/garage. They can also ring your phone if you use their button. If you've space on your keys these are really useful. If you've a perfect memory and never drop anything, great, not for you. Are the competitors better? Not I've you've a high end Samsung, 99. 9% of the time you'll be searching within Bluetooth range anyway.

  • If you keep it in the car, will it get toasted in 40C temp?

    • Wow. That was a genuine question. Is it safe to keep it in the car with extreme temp?

      • +1

        https://www.reddit.com/r/samsung/comments/18h6t0m/galaxy_sma…

The device can be used in locations with an ambient temperature of 0°C to 35°C. You can store the device at an ambient temperature of -20°C to 50°C. Using or storing the device outside of the recommended temperature ranges may damage to the device or reduce the battery’s lifespan

Do not store your device in very hot areas such as inside a car in the summertime. Doing so may result in damage to the device, or cause the battery to explode. • Do not expose your device to direct sunlight for extended periods of time (on the dashboard of a car, for example). • The battery can be stored separately in locations with an ambient temperature of 0°C to 45°C.

Protect the device, battery and charger from damage • Avoid exposing your device and battery to very cold or very hot temperatures. • Extreme temperatures can damage the device and reduce the charging capacity and life of your device and battery.

        • Thanks mate

    • +2

That's what I have been doing the past few years with the Airtag and now this. Inside the car, it easily reaches 55-60 C on sunny summer days, so if it fails, no warranty.

  • +2

How useful is this going to be for a piece of luggage that has gone astray from an international flight? If the bag is sitting in some random place in the bowels of an airport luggage system, how detectable is the tag without hoping some airport staff wanders past it with their Samsing phone in their pocket?

    • My tag gets picked up many times in various locations in the airport. I can usually see exactly where it is at the airport.

This version has Augmented Reality, which should (in theory) allow you to hold your phone up and see exactly where it is. I haven't tested this yet though.

      • It is back up to $55 now :(

  • So I bought this in the last deal just for the shortcut button.

Use case for me wasn't for tracking anything, but to use SmartThings to trigger my garage door open and shut. My old garage remote was huge and signal was pretty poor. I installed meross on my garage a few years ago and was able to used Android Auto shortcut in the old car. New car doesn't have AA so decided to tape this tag to a hidden, but easily locatable spot to trigger garage open and close in SmartThings.

Hasn't missed a beat running the shortcut each time - I've been impressed by the reliability.

Edit: And since I moved to a Pixel, I was bummed that it wasn't compatible. So pulled out an old Samsung A8, installed SmartThings on it and leave that in the car permanently, paired with the tag.
