[NSW] 50% off Licence Renewal Fees for Eligible Drivers @ NSW Government

2160

This deal has been going for some time but will end on the 17th February 2024. If you have a good driving record, you may be eligible for an automatic 50% discount on your licence renewal fee under the Fair Go for Safe Drivers Scheme.
You can renew your license up to 6 months before expiry and I have just renewed mine that expires after the 17th February 2024 and I still received the 50% discount so worth checking when your license expires and if you can renew early to take advantage of the scheme before it ends.

    New labor government policy.🤣

    • Read above, sounds like it was a liberal one.

      • But liberals didn’t win and labor could have chosen to continue this incentive when there is a cost of living pressure.

  • Demerit points, a system which does not disproportionately affect the poor or give the rich a way to get away with crime, like hefty fines, is being weakened by Labor. Labor are then charging law abiding citizens double. How is this the party of the working class, more the criminal class!

  • Just paid for renewal here in Victoria, only 25% off. Feel like being ripped off…lol

  • OP👍

  • i have a stupid HR license i dont need, but because of it i can only renew for 5 years. i can do 10 years if i release my HR license and go to a regular dumb license.i have no need for an HR license, but feel as soon as i let it go i will need it. :( i also have to go in and do my renewal because of my HR, but if i had a regular dumb one i can do it online for 10 years.

    this sucks. 1st world problems

    • 10 year license requires an eye test. So I'm pretty sure that even if you renew online, you still have to go in to do the eye test anyway.

  • My license expires at the end of September T_T … I couldn't get the discount last time after getting done 'running a red' at the notorious Arthur Street and Centenary Drive intersection on my way to work while still at uni.

That light sucks. Mum and dad have both gotten done there too looool

    • Were you on the way to Dong Ba?

  • Mine is expiring in August, is it worth it to renew already?

    • Just see I am not eligible as you need to hold you license for 5 years and my 5 years is ending in August.

      • -1

Just see I am not eligible as you need to hold you license for 5 years

No - you don't need to hold a 5 year license. You need a 10 year clean driving record. For example, suppose you got some demerit points 9 years ago, it would make sense to renew for 1 year, then get the 50% discount once you got the 10 year clean record.

Yes - it makes sense to renew early if you're eligible.

        • @salmon123 you're incorrect, you need to have had a NSW licence continuously for 5 years. You also do not need 10 years clear driving (that's the requirement to have a minor traffic offence waived) and instead need to just have a demerit balance of 0.

I tried to renew in person for 10 years prior to the holidays as I knew this deal was expiring, and I wanted to take my soon to be expired licence along with my IDP with me overseas and leave the new one at home.

Unfortunately for me, I moved back to NSW after a short stint in the ACT, and whilst my driving history is now well over 5 years (incl >5yr as a NSW driver) and I have 0 demerit points, the person at the counter knocked me back as my NSW licence was not continuously held in NSW for 5 years (now at 4 years and 11months).
As I was under 25 at the time, and they didn't offer 10 year licences to <25 year olds, my ACT 10yr licence was downgraded to a 5yr NSW one at the time, and now I've been told that I need to wait for the day it expires (exactly 5 years after issuance) before I get the discount.

despite the RMS wanting everyone to be legally licenced and rewarding good behaviour with discounts, they haven't configured their system to accommodate for 'early' (normal) renewals and the associated discount.
Sadly my licence expires after this deal officially ends, but the person at the counter said they've internally been told it'll be extended, so i'll try my luck

        • I read it as I need to have a NSW license for at least 5 years. I do have a license for more than 10 years but this is an overseas license. I only changed it to a NSW license in August 5 years ago.

  • Clown world we live in… it's all about the $$$ dolas. Who would have thought Labour running after $$$ because it was always a liberal thing…..
Reward bad drivers by expunging demerit points early and penalise good drivers by removing the 50% discount they used to get at license renewals.
Guess who's not getting any votes next election.

All these moving goal posts are so frustrating especially for people my age.

I got my full license the split second I could in 2019 (towards the end of the year literally on my birthday, as I did with L’s and P’s), and purchased a 5 year license thinking I’d be able to renew it after not loosing/gaining now any demerit points over the 5 years.

Coming up to my renewal this year, I finally would’ve been able to get the discount, at the earliest point possible for someone my age, but no, by the time I reach the age for it to be possible, it’s over.

Same goes for insurance, I was always told your car insurance premium is supposed to go down after turning 25 and becoming a ‘mature driver’, but after chatting with a few insurance companies, that goal post has now been moved to 30.

It’s so damn frustrating that every little goal post in life seems to move the second I get to them. Who knows maybe in the next 5 years a mature driver will be considered a 35 year old instead.

Sorry for the rant, this post just spurred something in me lol

I don't think it's 30 either. I'm still paying an absurd amount for insurance and I'm more closer to 40 than I am to 30

      • Love to hear it 😃😃😃😃😃😃

    • think it depends on insurer. I'm 25 as well and some insurers have come down a long way but the bigger players (esp QBE, NRMA, GIO/AAMI/Suncorp) all still charge the same as a year ago. Have been with NRMA for like 7 years (listed on and off on dad's policy/3rd party) and have a 75% loyalty/no claim discount, but still get charged like double my dad for the same car and about 50% more than BD or Qantas/Virgin

I had a perfect driving record and when tried to renew my licence a few days before it expired, the customer service officer at the RTA told me that I had to wait until my licence is actually expired before 50% discount could be applied because she said that I have to have perfect record for the last 5 years …not last 5 years minus a few days.

I then queistioed her about who is going to drive me to the RTA if I have to wait for my licence to be expired. She said that was the rule.

    • That's total BS.

  • only 25% for VIC, recently renewed for 10y including that discount..

  • I've got 2 demerit for accidentally entering a T-way road 2 years back. Tough luck.

  • +1

I recently renewed my licence for ten years and as others have said, had to do an eye test.

Now, I can recall doing eye tests at the RTA when younger and finding it quite difficult to read some of the smallest letters, even though I have good eyesight and never needed glasses. This time, however, I could not believe how easy the eye test was. While standing at the counter of Service NSW at Wynyard I was asked to look at a screen basically 1m above my head and read one row of good sized letters, that was it. You would pretty much have to be legally blind to have failed that test.

My licence is up for renewal in late August 2024, 9 days too late for this…

Does anyone have a way around this? Would suck to miss out on a $200 discount because of 9 days.

Perhaps I say my licence was stolen or lost so they would need to issue a new number/expiry?

  • Tried the code but it says deal doesn't apply to me.

  • Anyone know if the 10 year renewal is also ok for license about to expire in 6 month? Or is it only for the 5, 3,1 years?

  • Thanks for the info, I just got mine renewed in the afternoon for 10 years.

    • Was it an early renewal? And if so, how early? Cheers

    This is total BS.
Just another way to raise more money for treasury.
Getting a single infringement in a FIVE YEAR PERIOD makes you ineligible.

FIVE YEARS. It's like a MASSIVE ASS BOSS FIGHT with no checkpoints, that takes you HOURS to play and get to the very end, only to make one little mistake, the boss one shots you, you die and have to start all over again. FIVE YEARS is long long long time. Especially for a 20 year old. That's a quarter of their lifetime on earth. Just ludicrous.

Five years is tooo tooo tooooooooooo long. It needs to be two years. That's more reasonable. Then more people can qualify for it. At a cost to the state. Which is another BS move, because in England, it's virtually free. One time licence for life. No fees for annual renewal bull shit. RMS just make money out of us sheep. I have an Indian mate who confirmed that her licence is for 25 years for $20. WTActualF.

I'm sure other countries are cheaper as well. We're the ones getting ripped off.

  • "Under the 12-month trial, eligible motorists who have at least one demerit point on their record from January 17 2023 but remain offence-free for 12 months to January 17, 2024, will have one demerit point removed from their driving record. It normally takes three years for a demerit point to be expunged."
For those who have demerits prior to Jan 2023.
    Not me though.

  • This was a cool idea, wish we had it in Vic

  • Zero demerit drivers, looking for a bargain, now thinking - "I feel the need… the need for speed!"

I might just sneak this one in. Six months after 17 Feb is 17 August. My license expires a couple of weeks before that.

  • Great deal, saved me heaps. For those with licenses expiring in the next 6 months, the date of the expiry of the new licence is actually the same date as the date as the old ones expiry. I thought it may revert to 10 years from the day of renewal, but it does not appear to.

  • Not a NSW person - But ALWAYS (unless some special exception - E.G you're going to be a pensioner soon and get a discount) get the longest you can. They've increased it here in Tasmania too - I got 3 or 5 years last time and it's gone up around 50% more then I paid last time.

It's not the sort of thing that will ever get cheaper, only more expensive and you'll practically always need it.

  • why rego not 50%, i guess better for everyone.

    • That was what Toll Relief used to do.

  • Has anyone done this recently? Looks like I might not be able to go into service NSW until 16th Feb and didn’t want there to be potential issues that I need to go back another time and miss out on the deal.

Is it as simple as walking up taking a number and waiting? Photo taken and make payment and good to go?

    • "Is it as simple as walking up taking a number and waiting? Photo taken and make payment and good to go?" Exactly what I did and as long as you do it before the 17/02 then can't see any reason why you won't get the 50% discount if your existing license expires within the 6 months.

Awesome thanks! Due in July so timing is good!

    • Haven’t you renewed a licence before?

      • I did 5 years ago and I think it was online. Also system change.

  • +1

Thanks OP. I was due early August, and renewed yesterday!

  • I was looking to convert mine back to NSW, but even if I'd been eleigible for the discount the cost is ridiculous. A 10 year licence renewal in NZ is $32.40 - less than the cost of a single year in NSW

Got the license renewed yesterday and then smiling all the way back to my car.

I've literally waited 9years to be able to use this deal in the tenth year.. and they get rid of it. Grr
