Fun Facts

  • BYD’s only use LFP batteries.
  • These batteries don’t contain Cobalt or Nickel (which is often mined by children).
  • They have heavily reduced thermal runaway issues (see the attached YouTube video)
  • They don’t have the degradation issues that NCM style packs have
  • They can be charged up to 100% with minimal impact on battery life
  • BYD’s all have V2L (Vehicle to Load), so you can power anything from the car. Great during natural disasters or when power is cut.
  • BYD is one of the largest battery manufacturers on the planet, and one of the leaders in LFP battery technology.

Easier to cancel a special rebate than increase the price.

    • +3

Because it impacts customer resales values.
And for the company itself, it’s seen as a short term promotion, not lost income.

  • +8

Feel like the depreciation of a 2023 (despite being new) model would be greater than the 2k cashback…

    • +1

You’re correct, probably triple that or more. EV’s are going to tank for depreciation, hasn’t quite got there in Aus, but everywhere else it’s shown the way.

    • +23

Not criticizing your research or anything, but is that rate proportional to the number of vehicles sold?

I would think if BYD as a brand sold more than say, Tesla in China as an example, you'd statistically see more BYDs on fire than Tesla?

      • +7

You are right, as BYD sell more than Tesla in China it will statically see more BYD on fire than Tesla. I wouldn't say Tesla don't get fire also, it just when I did EV research seems that BYD had issue that they tried to cover up. I read an article recently, maybe last month where one of BYD HQ in caught fire in China where they store their car then few days later the article the disappear.

        • +24

Wait til you find out petrol is flammable…

          • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Wait til you find out petrol doesn't autoignite while refuelling.

          • -1

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Petrol doesn't continue to burn for days, emitting toxic fumes like cobalt etc

The current fire brigade advice is to go upwind of an ev fire and wait!

            • +5

@nismoau: The description explicitly calls out that this car doesn't have cobalt in its battery.

              • @tp0: @tp0 yeah okay in this case you'd get fluoride gas. good luck with that! it's completely fine! /s

              • @tp0: Bad for the economy, now kids have to find a new job to support the family.

          • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Wait until you see old EV’s on the road, that’s a big unknown. Least the fire brigade can put out a petrol fire, I’d hate to have a EV fire in my garage, as the entire house will likely be gone.
The stats on fires are very off as they don’t account for the numerous old vehicles that have wiring issues and ignite.

            • @Buddy195: Was talking to building manager of a big complex, said if you have ev charging in the building the insurance goes way up.

The insurance guys know something we don’t.

      • -3

They're selling like hotcakes in China! Only they're not. You're being sold a lie by the CCP

        https://youtu.be/1SEfwoqKRU8?si=0niPyUp3yJu1lm8h&t=187

        • +5

They are abandoned cheap ride share cars from companies that have gone bust.

Plenty of things to criticise the CCP for without using misinformation.

          • @Aureus: Source?

            • @cupnooodle: I can't get it right not, but there is a video on YouTube where people go to this field of cars.

They are mostly some China only brand cars and they still have the failed ride shares companies branding on them.

    • +4

The BYD fires were pretty much all hybrid models they only sell in China I thought. Models we don’t get here.

      • +1

The first link is actually BYD Atto 3 that this post related too :)

        • +8

If a battery fire looks like that with the internals pretty much all intact including the washer fluid. i would buy an Atto3 for safety.

          • -5

@Creamsoda: Well lucky the fire department got there before the fire reach the battery. If the fire got into the battery, it will become fireball and cost at least $30k+ just to replace its battery 🤣

    • +14

BYD is also the highest selling NEV producer in the world . The article you've linked is lumping Plug-in Hybrids as EVs. The BYD QIN and Tang are all plug-in Hybrids. The old discontinued E5 and E2 don't use their latest LFP batteries, both cars are over 12 years old. The Atto3 article you've linked is clearly not a battery fire or else nothing in the front would exist.

According to the Department of defence research on EV fires https://www.evfiresafe.com/ev-fire-faqs EVs has 0.0012% fire rate compared to 0.1% of ICE vehicles.

      • -6

First link related to this post, BYD Atto 3.
        Its related to DC charging.
Also here is a news article about BYD Doplhin caught fire. This model will be sold to Australia also.

    • +9

Agreed. Everyone knows ICE cars and trucks never catch fire.

    • +4

The fire issues are mostly from their hybrid PHEV models that use pouch type batteries, instead of much safer prismatic battery cells.

BYD don’t currently sell their PHEV models in Australia and are actively switching their batteries over to prismatic cells this year.

      See here:

    • -1

All the more reason to not park an EV in your garage

      • +3

EV has 0.0012% fire rate compared to 0.1% of ICE vehicles. i hope you're not risking your life parking your ICE in your garage.

    • People seem to be worried about fire, wait till ev gets nuclear battery, not long now.

    • But fires are fun, EV fires are far longer than ICE fires.

  • +2

Have they sorted out the rust issue yet?

    • Not saying it is, but this comment sounds like a FUD bot lol.

    • +1

What rust issue?. The smooth brains in the media that thought that a wrecked written off Atto3 in someone's front yard that had rust formed in areas disturbed by a collision was common?

  • +2

When will be the $2024 cashback ?

    • +5

      Jan 2025

    • +2

      hodl!

    • +4

I'd like to see a petrol car with 100% instant torque and constant power across the entire rev band

  • +2

I still won’t forget a little over a year ago they increased this by $3800.

So I won’t be biting, Tesla cutting prices left right and centre. Even the hot MG4 can be found for 2-3k less than MRP. Ev prices are sliding even faster than last year

    • +1

The new model 3 went up $4000 for the RWD despite not changing price in other markets.

    • +3

Makes sense that they moved in opposite directions. BYD starts with a value proposition, Tesla starts with a high priced status proposition. BYD more affected by recent inflation. Tesla more affected by recent competition.

    • How do I get the MG4 base model for 2-3k RRP?

    • +16

Anyone have a tin foil hat deal for this guy?

      • Lol

    • A Chinese dude not buying Chinese stuff, lmao.

  • +2

Love the price "war" between the Chinese EVs and Teslas even though I won't be getting an ATTO 3. Sorry I just dislike the look inside and outside.

  • +1

Waiting to see how the Apple car turns out to be……

    • +15

      One word, expensive.

      • +3

One word, won’t see the light of day

        • that's hack of a long word there!

      • +2

well this way I can say I saved more by not purchasing it…

    • +6

Does it come with an Apple Charger that is non-conforming to all other chargers, or is that an accessory?

      • Knowing the way Apple operates what do you think?

    • +1

It will be their most powerful EV ever!

  • +1

Thanks op, bought 0. Didn't win 100 mill last night

    • better at $150m lol

      • Good luck

    • If it makes you feel any better, no one won!

  • +3

$2023 buys a hell of a pair of sunglasses - which is precisely what you need to cope with the interior of the atto3. A nice car otherwise.

    • +5

The mark up on the Atto3 is pretty insane, its a cheap budget $30k SUV in China. Zeekr is going to launch here soon. Once Zeekr X gets released here no ones going to buy an Atto3 for $50k.

      • Zeekr are apparently going to be sold as a ‘premium’ brand in western markets.

        Volvo EX30 starts at $59K
Will they take $10,000 off the asking price of the Zeekr X if they want it to be seen as a ‘premium’ brand?

        I hope so!
        Just not confident.

        See the news article here:
        https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/zeekr-confirmed-as-chi…

        • +2

Zeekr is a new brand. selling at Volvo price will just be fail. Even thought its basically the same platform. The starting price of the X is cheaper than the Seal in China. they would still make decent margin selling at $50k.

Launching the 009 here is a stupid idea. the market wants affordable compact SUVs. not some ultra expensive people mover. People at Geely cant be brain dead.

        • Need more good quality budget options! Sick of EVs being seen as luxury cars.

      • +4

Yeah, the Australian taxes and middleman/transport costs are a joke. We're really getting shafted here for taking what are essentially budget cars.

        • +2

Perfect example was Kei cars a few years ago.

          Could be imported for <$5k.

Now the gubbermint and it's cronies got wise and it's basically double or more for exactly the same cars and all sorts of bullshit like "oh but they might be dangerous or have incorrect emission ratings!" Meanwhile giant American douche-mobiles drive around blocking everyone's vision and car park spaces.

    • Focus on road!

  • +6

EV manufacturers are getting desperate. They will cut prices as stock piling up. Personally I plan to transition to EV after five years or maybe 10 years and once the infrastructure is well established.

    • +2

What infrastructure is needed? Chargers everywhere

    • +6

Fair enough, a lot of people are uneasy about charging. The media is obsessed with reporting about it.

So far, after 6000km, I’ve charged about 1000km with a supercharger and 5000km at home. Charging off solar is 90% cheaper so most people charge at home, superchargers are just for road trips.

I was concerned at first but so far, I’ve never had to wait at a charger. (I did pass by one that was in use, the other was a 5 min drive away)

    • +1

Had the same mindset but was forced to buy due to old car konking out. Tbh now is the best time to buy. Infrastructure isnt gonna get better like you think it would. If long distance charging is a must for you, then you shouldnt really be looking outside of tesla.

      Just some things to consider.
      - there will probably be more chargers along motorways interstate, but just like all non tesla chargers theyre gonna have 6 stalls, 3 broken 50% of the time and the rest are barely providing the kw output they advertise.
      - tesla chargers will be sharing more superchargers but at the moment they have like 8 ready to be used by non teslas across australia. Ive tried a few and there can be issues eg. Slow speeds or not even connecting. Have a look at plugshare on the shared chargers and youll see alot of reviews from non tesla cars

During peak/holiday periods expect to be 2nd or 3rd in line to charge.

Dont wait until the gov forces people to buy evs, i guarantee you infrastructure would still be shite then.

  • +1

    Nice ad OP

  • +1

No one pedal driving kills it!

  • Can you buy from ACT even if you live in NSW? Just for the sake of incentive there.

    • You can buy it on a novated lease here in NSW and pay no GST and no FBT.

  • +22

Been driving one for a half year or so, pretty satisfied. We have never driven interstate, we charge the car at home for free with an EV plan, or our favourite shopping centre, which has 5 hours of free parking, charges at 7.5kw. Home charger is about the same, we sell solar for 10c, we charge the car for 8c per kw. I have a 16kw solar system, it pretty much covers everything and brings in some cash. My only complaint with the car is the lane assist mode, irs a bit aggressive. We charge once a week to 100%. The transition from an ICE car to this EV was super smooth, software gets updated quite often. I am enjoying the new low speed sound. The car came with a pretty lousy 8gb sd csrd, swapped it with a 512gb one, love the dashcam, and the 360 view camera.

    • Dash cam , you had to install this yourself right? And no rear dashcam camera ?

      • +4

The byd comes with a dash cam

        • +1

It doesn’t record when the car is off though, so forget about sentry/parked mode. Need an aftermarket unit for this.

        • The byd comes with a dash cam

          The seal/dolphin will say otherwise.

          • @JimmyF: Atto 3 still comes with one equipped. But Seal and Dolphin don't. But OEM cams can be bought via Ali plugged in and reboot the car and shazam. Dashcam.

        • +1

You sure as the seal videos don’t have a Dashcam

    • What is an ‘EV plan’, por favor?

      • Ovo energy

        8c per kwh 12am-6am

        • Yeah but that plan jacks ya regular rate as well so may well not be worth it depending on your circumstances.
