Overpriced but it’s a shoe that can last

    • +16

There is no overpricing with RM Williams boots. The Ozbargain police would like you to visit the beautiful Lake Laogai.

    • +10

Why shouldn't I pay more than $250? Find me a GYW boot with one piece upper made in Australia?

Cheapest GYW boots you'll find made in SEA are $300 (Meermin etc.) and Ringers Western (Aussie brand, made in Mexico) are $400

      • +19

I doubt you’ll find many RM owners who regret what they spent

        • +17

          I'm on that list.

Went into an RM Williams branch, spoke to their salesperson, tried on the shoes, was told that was the perfect size.
Wore them for 3-4 months and was constantly dealing with blisters on three different parts of both feet, using their stupid upsell leather moisturiser and all. They did not break in at all. I was limping constantly.

Now I've got lightly worn $600 paperweights because their 'wide' sizes and comfort series apparently didn't go on sale at all.
          Terrible purchase, would not recommend.

Edit: Their anti-slip sole apparently was no match for a little water on the floor of a Coles, the fall of which stuffed up my knee for a month.

          • +2

@Sleeqb7: Yeah the rubber sole can get slippery. Almost stacked it at a HJs when it was lightly raining. Unsure if I walked on an oil patch, but otherwise have been alright.

          • +6

@Sleeqb7: well you clearly have the wrong size. This doesn't mean the shoe sucks, any shoe would suck if it's too small for you.

            • +9

@gavincato: Which is why I went to the RM store specifically to make the purchase, to ensure I was sold the correct size by the people who should know the best. And they don't take returns for wrong size purchased, so I'm still out $600.

But the comment I'm responding to is talking about 'buyers who regret what they spent', which is 110% where I stand still.
I didn't say the boot sucks, I said it was a terrible purchase that I regret and wouldn't recommend to anyone.

              • +2

                @Sleeqb7:

they don't take returns for wrong size purchased,

They did for me. There might be some loosey goosey with "did you ever wear the product"

But I bought a 8.5H at Iconic, then realised i need a 9H, called up RMs store at Broadway, confirmed they could do it. Done and dusted. Even tho, 8.5H u can see the crease you get when u pull the boots on. Maybe 2 year ago

                • @sofasty: Their policy is to allow for .5 size change regardless of where you get them from

              • @Sleeqb7: Hey mate, they must have used the shoe size scale on you, don't trust that thing.

RMs are narrow and you need to go one size up for comfort.

          • +3

@Sleeqb7: wot? did they shrink in the box going home, were they not the wrong size when you tried them on?
how is that anyone's fault other than yours?

            • +4

@Ryk: There is a massive difference between wearing a shoe in a shop for 3-5 minutes and walking in them across different terrains daily, obviously.

          • +1

@Sleeqb7: Have you bought chelsea boots before?

Here's my contention. I've never worn chelsea boots but I wanted RMs, so when I tried it instore I didn't have an airtight idea of what comfort in those boots meant. I'd only heard that it would be comfortable and there is a slight give as you wear them but DO NOT count on it. Even at that I went in, got sized for 8H at i believe Iconic retail. It was a bit tight in hindsight but from walking around the store, huh it seemed fine. Then when I bought some I realised it was too tight so i went 8.5H guided by RM reps then I when I got home, I decided to wear them around the house and I realised , it was fine walking around the store for 15 min but wearing it for hours, it was too tight. And hence I got my 9H and I'm happy.

Was it the reps fault? I mean what else was I gonna say, "There's a bit of a tightness but its not like my toes are seated unnaturally" They can pinch my toe in boot but how can a rep tell the sides of the toes are fine? I guess at the end of the day , the rep can ask questions but it's on you to express what discomfort you feel and what you know to look for. I've always been told there is a slight breaking in period but DO NOT count on it making the fit perfect if it isn't already comfortable.

            • +1

@sofasty: Na, not your fault mate, believe it or not but your feet actually get bigger later in the day and you need to account for it.

            • @sofasty: It wasn't uncomfortable when trying on for me too, other than some tightness, but I've owned plenty of leather shoes before where that tightness stopped being an issue after a few weeks.
This time around, no such luck.

          • @Sleeqb7: Sorry you experienced that but i was well taken care off by the staff at RMW Murray St, Perth. Perfect size and looking to buy my 4th pair.

As others have hinted, you've got the wrong size. A good cobbler can stretch the boots wider and hopefully prevent those blisters.

            • @susu abis: I think it's multifaceted.
They're not wide enough for my feet, absolutely.
But I feel my feet slide to the front of the shoe when walking downhill, so they're too long.

So I'm probably shit out of luck either way, I think.

          • @Sleeqb7: Sorry to hear you slipped, there are a lot of leather shoes that have hard, non gripping soles. Luckily I can get away with black runners at work, but they don’t look as nice

            • @Vomo: I'm on the black joggers train after the my experience with the RMs, despite it being against company policy.
Turns out nobody actually cared, which is nice.

        • +1

I'm one, and I'm on the other side of the fence. Every colleague of mine who owns RMs (lets face it, it is a conversation starter if you're both wearing RMs) do nothing but complain about blisters and sizing and the cost of RM workshop maintenance.

          • +1

@Saywhatold: If they’re getting blisters then they’re wearing the wrong size.

You also don’t need to take them back to RM to get resoled. Any decent bootmaker will do it.

        • My problem with them is that they get scratched pretty easily and stained as well. Also the socks slips and makes the noise when walking. I got it off full price from RM shop but kinda regret it buying. Aquilas are ok for the time they last I reckon.

        • +2

I've had mine for 5 years currently, 5 days a week for work. I spent 200 on julius marlow which fell apart in a month, refunded and got these.

They are tight to begin with and once I wore them in they are hands down the best shoe I've ever owned and the value for durability is 10/10.

I also got them back when 20% discount existed for certain jobs. They also werent 650RRP.

      • +1

I used to spend $150 a year on Florsheim lace ups. The chestnut RMs are now on their 4th year and look like they'll need a heel in about 2 years.

        • have done exactly the same, just bought a pair of RMs and expect they'll last a decade with only a few days a week in the office

          1. That's like a 5 piece leather upper
          2. Genuine leather vs top hide leather
          3. Not made in Aus

GYW is cool but the upper will die before you resole

    • Does anyone here remove the pull tabs?

i want some in kangaroo 🦘

    • In my opinion, these are the best leather.

      • Kangaroo? Yeah shame you can only really buy them direct. The plain black Kangaroo seems to be out of stock. I asked and they said hopefully March for more stock but they are like $700 or something

Link to all RM Williams boots on sale.

Take note of the fit (either regular or wide). I needed wide fit even though I always thought I had narrow feet.

    • +2

Also worth mentioning many people myself included take slightly different sizing in different boots for RM (even between comfort craftsmen and dynamic flex craftsman).

As they are not sports shoes your feet tend to sit flatter and wider, meaning you might need the H fit (wide) or .5 size bigger depending.

Always best to try on and get fitted in store and go with what feels right, not what someone says is best.

    • Definitely a troll post

I wear boots EVERY day. When I was young, I'd buy cheap boots. - $50-$150. I'd get about 1 year per pair with daily use. RM williams have last me over 5 years so far, and many more years left in them. Cheaper in the long run

  • What's the colour to get?

    • +1

      Chestnut

    • Black

      • +1

Only if you got brown first

  • Picked some up after RM Williams employee stitched me up to get the smaller size a few years ago, this deal I can finally get a size up and wear them

    • Do you recommend a size up or size down?

      • +3

I got swindled with 2 sizes down (tried them on in-store and he told me these will fit the best, and admittedly they did for the first 3 minutes) fast forward to wearing them long-term and my toes were so cramped and cutting my other toes, I recommend just 1 size down, and definitely the wide fit - unless you have really narrow feet

        • +2

Same, first pair of RMs sitting in the cupboard because an RM employee was adamant that the boot should fit like a tight sock. Really tried to wear it for a while but it was so uncomfortable and I felt unsteady on my feet. Wasn't allowed to return it because it had been worn in already.

    • Went through the same thing. I've heard good things about RM employees but I've only had bad fitting experiences every time.

      • Just went through a customer support issue after buying a pair of dynamic flex comfort craftsman from one of the outlets shipped ($499). One shoe turned out to be a narrow fit and the other a wide fit. I did not notice it for a few weeks but the narrower one wasn’t wearing in and Mrs entropy noticed the differences in width.
Advised by costumer support to take it to the nearest store. The dude refused to swap them unless I coughed up the extra $150 to RRP.
So, back and forth a few times with customer support and the involvement of the very helpful lady at the outlet store and eventually they shipped me a brand new, non seconds pair. They are wearing in nicely

    • What’s your usual street shoe size vs your not so good sized RM?

I think I have the exact same situation. My RMs are tight fitting, okay for short periods of wear, but toes get cramped at end of the day.

They are normal width 8.5s. Not sure if I need to go normal 9 / wide 8.5 / wide 9.

      • Usually a US12 in my adidas NMDs, they gave me a 10H (too tight), I've just ordered an 11H

      • Try the wide (H) 8.5.

The boot sizing chart has both length and widths listed in their sizing guide: https://www.rmwilliams.com.au/unisex-buyers-guide.html?lang=…
It is worth trying in-store to get the right fit (try to walk around for a while before going into the store as your feet can expand 1/2 size and wear the right socks as well)

      • if the 8.5G (normal) are good except its tight around the toes, i'd go 8.5H. (wide)

  • +1

ugh where are the wide fits!!

    • +1

There are still some available discounter at MYER, maybe not all sizes tho..

  • +2

Damn, would have pulled the trigger if they had wide fot 8.5 in Chestnut

  • -3

I had a $30 pair from Kmart or BigW. The bottom sole is eroding. Does this brand last longer? I Think the sole will eventually thin out, what is the point of a $450 boot verus the $30?

    • I think you could answer this yourself…
Yes they can last more than a decade if you polish them regularly.

    • Expect 5-10years easy from these shoes.

    • RMs will last about 3 years before needing a re-soling. They offer a professional service where their workshops will refurbish them for you; new heels is $110 or re-sole and heel is $165.

It's not cheap. If you're satisfied with buying replacement boots from Kmart every year or two, then do what makes most financial sense for you. I'm yet to actually meet an owner of RMs who has owned them for long enough to recoup the cost of purchasing them over - say - Hush Puppies or something similar. But they appeal to some people.

      • They're comfortable but they're not really all that cost effective IMO. I've had to replace the heel rubber every year (like $45) and then the sole after 4 years. The finish also gets damaged very easily, much more easily than I would have expected for a boot this expensive. I hear maybe they used to be more durable? I still love wearing them because they're so comfortable but the maintenance costs are significant

      • For what it's worth, a really old guy at my office said he's had his RM Williams boots for 23 years and counting…I have the rip-off Hush Puppies Chelsea boots but I think it's worth considering the RM's longer-term if you can afford the initial investment.

        • +1

Its a Theseus' ship scenario. Technically you've "had the boots" for 23 years, but every part of them has been replaced multiple times over so you don't really have the same pair of boots. I too have had RMs and Hush Puppies. I'll stick with the Hush Puppies every time. They cost about $100 on sale, last 3 years a pair at least.

For me its a no brainer but each to their own of course.

          • @Saywhatold: There is a middle ground.. I wouldn't even pay that much for scruffy school boy looking shoes.. those black hush puppies look terrible, especially after they get a bit worn.

    • +2

RM's last longer, can be repaired, and look much better.

  • Damn was considering at dj price but still a stretch for me.

  • +3

Wait, are these the ones that were referred to as being slippery? Is comfort the one with more grip?

    • Comfort has the grip I think.

The post from a few days ago was different and had the leather sole. Can't remember the model of that pair though.

  • +2

Bought these shoes… 4 years ago? Well, the dynamic flex craftsman, and theres not a thing wrong with them, I use them as my daily driver (whether I'm going out to a pub, or getting some gardening/landscaping done). A wet clothe, and a bit of polish will keep these looking smick.

  • -2

These are the $450 shoes that last 20 years if….

    You polish them every week
and resole them every 6 months right?

    Such durability!

    • You don't have to resole or polish your boots. You can easily wear them until the leather cracks and sole become paper thin; it just won't be repairable due to the leather drying out, and instead of a reheel, you will end up with a resole, which is significantly more expensive.

  • Thanks god my friend works for Myer , got a pair for 386.15 :)

    • +1

There are real bargains sometimes, I paid around $290 for seasonal comfort craftsman thanks to ob deal.

  • +3

Yes this shoe is expensive. The point isn't to just get a good shoe, it's about signalling your social status. People pay more so they can be seen to be wearing RM Williams shoes. If the shoe were cheap it would defeat the purpose.

    • Well no comments about making it's billionaire owner even richer. Clever marketing re the Australian manufacturer however.

    • +4

here's my "I shouldn't care but I do" admission: I've seen so many banker chuds wearing RM Williams with ill-fitting suits in the CBD over the years that RMW is a brand that doesn't interest me at all.

There are plenty of good shoe and boot makers out there so I'm not really missing out either

Allen Edmonds, Grenson, Loake, etc. have served me well instead

  • Does anyone experience any squeaking with their shoe?

I experience squeaking while I'm walking (tends to happen after a while of having them on, so not instantaneously). I did a google on this a while back, and apparently one way of fixing it was using a minimal amount of leather conditioner inside the shoe. I tried this, however it wasn't fully successful. The squeaking occurs near the anklebone.

It shouldn't be the sizing as I got fitted by a RM Williams store prior to purchasing online. My next point of call is trying talc powder and changing to thicker socks. I have one pair of socks of which the squeaking is really minimal, but they are really thick socks (I think wool?) which is annoying at this time of the year.

    • +1

I have heard wearing wool socks works to eliminate/minimise squeaking, but yeah not great at this time of year.

    • +1

      Talcum powder…

    • I found this happens on the Dynamic Flex model. I haven't had this on the leather sole or Comforts
I was told to use talcum powder by RM staff - but that didn't help.
The squeak was in the flexing of the sole, so leather conditioning doesn't help

      • Unfortunately, it's occurring on my only pair, which is the Comforts :(

Interesting that it's happened to the flexing of the sole - I think that may also occur in my shoes.

So, I assume nothing really helped in your case?

        • Nothing helped unfortunately, I'll get the soles swapped out when it is due

    • I get squeaking on my left shoe, and seems like it's my little toe that causes the squeaking after a number of hours walking around. Was going to go into RM to see if they can replace or something, not sure how that'll go down though.

I heard about using talcum powder, but should that really be needed on new pairs of comfort craftsmans?

Wondering if the dynamic flex would be different, but just saw sydney_kings mentioned below it happens to his… ugh

    • I sometimes wear bamboo socks with mine and they squeak. When I wear merino wool socks they don’t…

  • Is this sale only for mens, not womens? I can't seem to find womens sizing (5F) here at all. Thank you!

    • +1

Craftsmans are a unisex boot, but Myer and DJs only stock size 6 and up.

The Iconic are the only retailers I know of that have a wider variety of sizes. I'm a 5F too, so I know your pain.

    • umm what feminine v masculine feature are you expecting on leather chelsea boots?

  • Anyone know what the difference with the G sizing is? E.g. What's 8 and what's 8G?

    • +1

      Ah found it.

      F = Narrow
      G = Regular
      H = Wide

  • Craftsman or dynamic flex?

    • I went dynamic

  • +1

is UK size 9 the same as RM williams size 9? :/
