  • seems to be quad core?

2.7kg - need to consider this if school kids need to cart it around.

    • +4

Harvey Norman specs are wrong for weight. It's 1.6kg according to the Acer website.

2.7kg would put it in 17"+ gaming laptop weight specifications.

Descent laptop for good price. Maybe a bit big for school kids. At least they have stopped USB 2.

Aspire 3 has TN Panel vs Aspire 5 has IPS Panel. They are both entry level panels. They will be suitable for basic primary/high school use but not good enough for graphics work.

For basic school work, can consider the Intel based version and save $200. https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-aspire-3-15-6-inch-i3-n…

  • I still think 15.6 screens are far too big for kids to be carting around for school, regardless of how lightweight the device is. 11 or 12 is far better.

    • You're right about 15.6 being too big.for school. And this one is also low res. In my opinion 12" or 13" screen is ideal (and those sizes are also recommended by our local high school)

The screen is 1080p IPS. I don't know what you mean by low res.

        • 1080p on a 15.6 screen is very low res to me and probably anyone who has had a decent laptop in the last 5 years or so. I have a 13" work laptop at 1080p and even after using an old Microsoft Surface, the 13" Lenovo is like going back in time.

The first 1080p screen on a laptop was in 2011. I think things have improved since then!

  • How Acer quality these day?Back in old day very low quality build!

  • Damn that's cheap…if only I was interested in giving HN any of my money.
Instead I bought a Lenovo direct.

  • How about display? LED or OLED?

  • SSD or Nvme?

    • +1

      All NVme these days.

  • Get a oled at that price

  • Also note this is a Mendocino APU, which uses Zen 2 w/LPDDR5.

So the CPU core itself is a couple generations old, so don't expect Zen 3/4 levels of performance from this. With Zen 5 dropping this year, I'm not sure this is a great deal.
