  • Smallish battery for school. Max 9 hours and 47w
    Thoughts?

    • +8

If it actually gets 9 hours, that is exceptional for this price and performance tier.

      • +3

get a generator off FB marketplace and youre sorted.

    Would this be better?

    • +11

no that has an i3 and half the RAM and storage

      • Damn I need 15” or more :(

      • +1

        and a TN panel screen

  • +5

Everything looking good for me except screen

    • How bad is the screen, is it good enough for a year 5 school kid?

      • +4

        220 nits, TN screen.
You want min 250 (300 preferred) IPS screen for budget laptop.

I really don't understand why manufactures use such parts, surely the price difference isn't that great. Even with RAM, why use 4 or 8?… surely their cost is negligible.

        • +4

sadly the marginal cost differences add up at high volume, and Lenovo have to finesse their margins for the shareholders

          • -6

@beltdrive: Soon they'll expect every consumer to suk shareholder dic haha - it wasn't like this 35+ years ago. Shareholders were important but were not the focus of business.

        • Capatialism! TN vs IPS == cost.

Price difference between 8 and 16. Yes. And when you have purchased a fixed supply of 8GB modules what do you do with them?

Also note that the system supports a max of 16GB. 8 soldered and 8 not. I'd conclude the reasoning behind this is that if both chips fail you can replace 1 and still have a functioning laptop but I'm not 100% on whether the system can function without the soldered memory - never experienced that before.

        • +1

the god of budget lapstops demands a sacrifice! Screen, CPU or RAM.

      • +2

I have got for my year 7 student. No complaints about screen from child but it is noticeably dim compared to our other devices. Fine if you're sitting at a desk.

      • It will be more than fine for school kids.

  • -5

    be careful of lenovo laptops.

I got a IdeaPad flex5 (plastic case front and back) and was quoted approximately $850 to fix a screen that had been broken by being closed!
that was squeezed against a holding rail on full/busy public transport in a shoulder bag (I will admit hard, but still…).

    The laptop cost around $1,100.

    -_-

    • +2

Well, what do you expect will happen?…if your gonna mistreat them consider getting the full aluminum mil spec ones.

      • Sometimes I get squashed sardines. The moral is push back.

      • its not the mistreatment which happens (though really I think being bumped into a handrail shouldn't break a screen (with no other damage to the laptop)).
Its the quote of $850 to fix a screen.
downvotes - how many of those have received a bill of 75%+ of the laptop cost to fix it, with zero water damage and needing only 1 (ok big) part.
People should potentially know the cost you might get to repair one of these assuming we want informed consumers, which we don't.

        • What brands do you recommend then? What would the repair price have been with your recommended alternative brands? Your warning is pointless without giving us a comparison to other brands and what we SHOULD buy instead.

          • @howcan: Lenovo has used a 2.2k screen.

Lenovo repair center (really a 3rd party provider) quoted 85% cost.

Aliexpress no name chinese brand $300 or so (chinese brand).
Probably will invalidate my current warranty ("it uses a non standard part!!!") which I was trying to avoid.

I did ask a 3rd party shop for a quote and they said they couldn't even get the screen in.

You can get a 4k screen for $150 of Aliexpress.
So it grates to see a better screen for half the price.

        • +3

          Hi mate!

Lenovo sells genuine replacement parts and there are lots of legitimate resellers of replacement parts. 850 is a complete sham… just do it yourself. assuming its a tn panel you can get any old aliexpress screen for 100 bucks and itll probably look better and if its an ips or oled look into panelook.com and find yourself a replacement (find the model of a panel you like and search on ebay or whatever chinese taobao clone you like (shouldnt cost more than 200 imo)).

alternatively search "laptop model number" + replacement screen on ebay and youll find something that should work and worst comes to worst send back the screen and refund

ps never force any parts to work together, lenovo provides documentation and diagrams on how to replace parts so if something doesnt fit just return, refund and try again.

          cheers

          • @Some Random Guy: laptop screen is $300 off ebay, aliexpress, etc.
its a non standard screen (2.2k)
which is not that common compared to 4k or 1080p screens.
One can get a 4k screen for $150.
So as you can see this grates a bit (a better screen costs half the price).

    • Laptop bag or just a bag?

      • +1

laptop bag, padding not as good as a high end bag but still acceptable for other types of laptops like mac, acer (predator), etc.

    • Just do your research and replace the screen yourself

      • its a 2.2k panel which is not a popular make.
even if I did 100% and probably invalidate my warranty it still would cost me $300 with a no name chinese panel.

        A 4k screen cost $150.

    • Was that repair cost from JBhifi or another retailer? It's very high. Just a screen replacement i charge $340 plus any plastics extra that were broken. I'm a repairer not a retailer making a markup on the place they send it to.

      • From lenovo - it was still under warranty and I was worried that a 3rd party repair would invalidate the whole warranty (you used a non standard part!!! I got denied a battery replacement from apple because of this) . I was expecting a higher price but not 85% of the cost of the laptop.

    • Is the screen hard to replace? Screen are about $100 on ebay

      • to buy the screen on this model costs around $350+postage aud, but have fallen to around $300aud (inc postage).
it uses 2.2k screen, so its not standard screen that are cheap to buy.

    • I guess due to the down votes it was my fault for not checking 3rd party no name chinese laptop monitors on Aliexpress before I bought the laptop.

It was also my fault for assuming a plastic laptop slightly bumped against a bus handrail would break the screen.
Sure it was in a (slightly) padded case but thats not an excuse for taking public transport in the bag that came with it.

Obviously I thought 2.2k would be around the same price as 4k laptop monitor, but it turned out to be 100% more.
And as its uncommon they can't get it in at the (2nd) repair shop I got a quote with anyway.

As I had not really been up with the latest laptop tech, I just assumed that it was the new standard between 4k and 1080k and for a 14 inch monitor 4k was not really needed.

Anyway looking at getting a surface.

Officeworks won't price beat a price with a coupon

    TN panel…

  • Sad, no Fingerprint reader. Going to be a pain to keep typing in passwords

    • Eh a pin isn't that much of an issue, especially at this price point.

    • Windows Hello should fix your issues, even with the crappy camera on this model.

    • thanks, saved me from pulling the trgger

  • Any1 own this laptop. Comments/Experience?

    • +2

Not exactly same, but I have IdeaPad 5. Made from cheap plastic and hinges broken by just opening. Some keys stopped working after a while and keyboard got replaced under warranty. Repairman came home to fix it. After a while it stopped turning on. Do not recommend it.

  • Geez, big spec, little money

  • 220nits!
