Heinz Ketchup or Generic Tomato Sauce

Having a family discussion and my brother is disgusted that I use generic home brand tomato sauce and insists on Heinz ketchup only!

I can’t really tell the difference can you? What do you buy?

    Heinz Ketchup.

    Hellmans Mayo.

    French’s Mustard.

    Secret Aardvark Habanero hot sauce.

    • +6

      Hellmans Mayo.

      You misspelled Thomy.

    • +2

      Should be Colman's mustard

      • For mild english yes. Frenchs for american mustard. Masterfoods for hot english mustard.

        • +1

          What? No Keen's mustard?

    • What pickles?

      • Branston pickles for sandwiches.

Wicked pickles (and olives) for everything else.

        • +4

I might be wrong because it’s been ages since I was looking at pickles but from memory Wicked pickles and Coles brand pickles are both made in India with exactly the same ingredients list and nutritional tables.

      • +2

Vlasic - dill pickles. Pickles that taste like pickles should.

      • +1

        Globus dill pickles!

    • +3

      N'y a que Maille qui m'aille.

    • +2

      Kewpie Mayo

    • Used to have Hellmans, now got onto S & W

Whichever one is on the shelf, on sale, and made in Australia with Australian tomatoes…

    • +15

Agreed. I can tell when it’s not Aussie battler tomatoes. I spit it out purely based on instinct.

  • +7

    ETA BBQ.

    • Best tasting bbq sauce, though quite runny

  • +1

Maccas and HJs use Heinz which is why I use it. I know it’s like 50% sugar but god damn it taste good!

  • I experimented with Harris Farm brand this time but back to Heinz it is.

  • +3

As long as it’s sweet n tangy I think it’s fair play

Who's gonna make the gravy now?
I bet it won't taste the same
Just add flour, salt, a little red wine
And don't forget a dollop of tomato sauce
For sweetness and that extra tang

  • +4

    Fountain

Can taste the difference between home brand, aldi, heinz and fountain.

  • +26

Rosella in a glass bottle for the win

    • +3

Can you still buy it in a glass bottle? My local supermarkets only stock it in a plastic squeeze bottle. Still the best tomato sauce around though.

      • my local woolies has 1 facing on the bottom shelf, Its the only one we buy

    • +6

Second Rosella, by far the nicest tasting.

333 BBQ sauce is my secondary preference (even if they sponsor Collingwood)

    • +2

Came to say this. Only Rosella. Only in the glass bottle.

    • Oh hell yeah get that inside me.

      • +6

Be careful the bottle doesn't shatter

        • +1

Don't worry I've seen one man one jar.

    • Didn't even know about this brand until now.. Gonna give it a go next time, cheers!

  • +11

The correct answer is White Crow Tomato Sauce in a glass bottle.

    Ketchup is unAustralian.

    • Asked an American mate to grab some tomato sauce on the way to a bbq.. he rocked up with tomato pasta sauce…

      • +1

        when life gives you lemons…

  • Heinz for burgers. Tomato sauce for everything else

  • +1

Masterfoods Tomato Sauce Reduced Salt and Sugar. Admittedly only 30% Australian ingredients, but made in Australia.

On another note, Sweet Baby Rays is the only BBQ sauce in the discussion. A gift from the USA to the world.

    • Lillies sauces. Avail in Woolies and BBQs Galore. It'll rock your world.

  • +4

    Heinz reduced salt and sugar.

  • Heinz for me. Nothing else comes close.

  • +3

The best tomato sauce by far is Mon

    • +1

  • +1

Heinz always. It's the perfect marriage of sugar and vinegar.

  • +6

My wife thought they were all the same… Until I went out and bought 9 different options and did a blind taste test with the family and we all scored them.
White Crow came out on top, followed by Rosella and Masterfoods, then Heinz.
Few others through the middle but worst scored by far was the IGA home brand one.

She now no longer thinks sauce is all the same!

    • +3

We did the same thing with mayonnaise and everyone agreed that the Aldi Colways Authentic Mayonnaise and Best Foods Real Mayonnaise were both the best tasting, but that specific Aldi mayo came in the convenient squeeze bottle rather than a jar and was lower in price for the win.

      • +2

Did you have Kewpie mayo in the mix? It's not cheap but it's really exceptional stuff.

        • We taste tested it as well knowing that it has a cult following and favourite for many. It was nice and creamy and rich but the savoury/salty flavour was a bit too much for us, maybe it depends on the food type. Definitely a quality mayo though!

    • +1

Oh man that ranking is beast.

Heinz really is overrated IMO. Masterfoods is leagues better and White Crow and Rosella are better than Masterfoods. The last time I had Heinz tomato sauce was when I got a sachet from Macca's and it tasted pretty bland and average. Now I want some tomato sauce.

  • +2

Whichever one you go for make sure you put it in the fridge after opening.

    • Speaking of safe handling of sauces…

At a large Adelaide petrol station the sauce bottles are kept on a counter. When someone asks for sauce with their pie, the staff insert the nozzle all the way into the pie and squirt the sauce. This obviously leaves the nozzle contaminated with pastry, meat, and sauce. Bottle gets put back onto the counter with the contamination on it, ready to be inserted into the next pie and spread bacteria.

Ever bought servo food and been sick? Now you know.

      • Do they not serve the little squeeze packets of sauce? I've only been to 7/11 and they've always had the small little squeeze packets of sauce

        • Nope, straight from reusable large bottles, and who knows how often they are cleaned.

          • @Cluster: That's (profanity) nasty. I'd never shop there if they are cutting costs on (profanity) sauce.

      • This is how sauce was dispensed into pies at the school canteen, long ago.

        • And no one got for sick from it.

  • You most certainly can taste the difference i love my Heinz.

But as its gone up in price and rarely comes on special now i use masterfoods but surprisingly the woolworths home brand is alright.

Can't stand the Aldi brand absolutely foul though my boys dont mind it.

If you cant tell the difference maybe your taste buds are non existent.

Though my taste bud may pick up more details years ago i did a blind taste of 4 different brands of bottled water on a bet and got 100% its the plastic used you can taste with some waters.

    • Has been very inexpensive at Costco and Amazon for the 1L bottles (I think $4 or under per bottle). You just have to stock up at the right time.

  • +1

I can tell the difference just from the packaging

  • +1

Choice magazine did a blind taste test and Community Co A Squeeze Of Tomato Sauce came out top. I think it’s the IGA one.

    • +1

That came out by far the worst in our own blind taste test. Saw the choice article and added into the mix for that reason, but it scored deal last for all of us.

  • +1

Need to add "None" to the poll.

  • Here's three I'm going to try out.

    White Crow
    Aldi Mayo
    Community Co Sauce.

Normally used the Berenberg sauce but it does taste very chutney like.

  • +1

Rosella Tomato Sauce proudly 100% Australian owned.

  • Three Threes tomato sauce is the one I like best but I am not too fussy, Fountain is also good but happy to use the standard Aldi, Coles, etc tomato sauces.

What's happened to Heinz Big Red?

    Ketchup is un-Australian

    • You can still get it some niche places.

I insisted on it, but compared back-to-back with the Heinz Ketchup, I preferred the ketchup taste… just hate saying it. 😕

      • It was available at the supermarket until recently I needed to buy more.. all gone

Happened a while ago but it came back.

  • I've got Heinz for when I'm using Ketchup on it's own but also a big bulk bottle of the homebrand stuff for when I'm mixing it to make burger sauce, bbq sauce, etc.

  • Berenberg tomato Sauce, definitely prefer Heinz Tomato Sauce over there ketchup though, way to much sugar in ketchup. The difference between tomato sauce and ketchup is pretty huge taste wise.

    • Trying the Beerenberg now, tastes a bit more tangy than Heinz Big Red.

  • Dont know how you cant tell the difference, Ketchup is yankee speak for extra salt and sugar

    It tastes awesome… I wonder why….

    • Tomato source and ketchup both have similar sugar levels at ~25g/100ml, and in terms of salt Heinz Ketchup is actually the lowest of the name brands. That said Woolies home brand is a little lower because its watered down.

Also the salt/sugar reduced version Heinz is awesome and by far the lowest.

      Sugar/100ml:

      Heinz 50% less sugar/salt: 12.1g
      Masterfoods reduced salt/sugar: 16.7g
      Woolworths: 20.4g
      Rosella: 22.6g
      Masterfoods: 24.8g
      Fountain: 24.9g
      Coles: 24.9g
      Heinz: 25.3g

      Salt/100ml:

      Heinz 50% less sugar/salt: 395mg
      Masterfoods reduced salt/sugar: 606mg
      Woolies: 677mg
      Coles: 710mg
      Heinz ketchup: 800mg
      Masterfoods: 828mg
      Fountain: 845mg
      Rosella: 1362mg

I like Woolworths home brand….but boycotting them due to their Australia Day snub …so maybe Heinz then!

  • Ozesauce for us, Heniz is good but a bit too sweet

  • Any

  • +1

Rosella all day. Extra points for the glass bottle.

  • Mon Tomato Sauce.

For me best tasting sauce. Can really taste the difference from those that use acetic acid compared to vinegar.

Made in Australia with Australian ingredients.

  • +1

    Rosella

  • +1

I’ve never seen or heard of White Crow in WA. Must be eastern states only I’m guessing?

    Rosella is my current favourite.

I’m much more picky about chilli sauce.

  • +1

    Beerenberg Tomato Chutney

    Because I'm fancy as (profanity).

    100% Aussie too.

    • +1

Great on beef burgers with blue cheese. Their normal tomato sauce rocks too!

  • Heinz ketchup for me. The lower sugar, lower salt version. Delicious.

  • Heinz 500mL, made in the Netherlands

  • +1

Three Threes tomato sauce - Australian owned & made, with at least 98% Australian ingredients. It tastes great as well. It's great for fried rice! Currently on sale at woolies as well for $2.

  • Normally we have a Masterfoods Tomato Sauce and the salt/sugar reduced Heinz Ketchup. They belong on different things.

But Anything but Fountain is the only rule I live by.

    • What's wrong with Fountain? Their tomato sauce isn't bad.

  • ketchup is not UnAustralian. Just check the bottle ingredients, the yank version is full of high fructose corn syrup.

  • Tried that MON Tomato Sauce from Queensland. Last one in Coles, it was excellent. You wouldn't think using Vinegar instead of Acetic Acid from China that everyone else uses, would make such a difference.

    • +1

If you can't find the Mon… look for Ozesauce same as Mon.

  • It's cost vs reward factor.

    Is Heinz better? Yes.
Is it 2x the price better? No.

    • When is half price though?

      • +1

This is true. But I figure if I get it when it's half price. Then the family might get used to it and then complain if I go back to Coles/aldi brand when Heinz is not on special..

  • Ketchup and tomato sauce is different though, I like ketchup because of the vinegar, tomato sauce doesn't have that as an ingredient.

    • that used to be the case, most tomato sauces now include vinegar.

  • Catsup

  • Coles Ketchup is quite nice. Used to have tomoato sauce as a kid, but found that Ketchup is a bit sweeter and doesn't have as much tartness to it.

  • Beerenberg, all the rest are just lolz, you're just debating if one inferior product is better than another inferior product.

  • Glass bottles only. Reducing my plastic consumption, as it's the right thing to do.
