Soniq 42" Full HD LCD TV @ JB Hi-Fi for $399 + $18 Postage

90

Just got this in my inbox. Don't need one myself but thought it seemed pretty cheap even for a basic 42" Full HD LCD.

Does this mean "they've done it again"?

Anyone interested in this be careful. The TV only supports 50hz which is terrible for gaming. Movies will be fine.

    • Interesting read here on Refresh Rate differences in CRT, LCD, Computer Displays & Watching a movie

    • yes im waiting for 100hz for this price

    • WTF is this 1976? That's pretty dumb. It can't take a 60hz signal at all?

      • +2

Of course it can, these poor clueless sods just think 100Hz MC = 100Hz RR! :o

        • Hah. Was rather confused for a few minutes there. :)
This is really an amazing price but I might drop the few extra bucks and go for the LED @ DSE. Then again, all depends on how they look in person.

        • Then again, all depends on how they look in person.

Spot on! Much like internet dating, that's definitely the deal maker/breaker! ;)

All things being equal, the extra hundred for 4" more & LED (possible long term power savings) makes the DSE unit very appealing…particularly if you're gonna take advantage of the free shipping! :)

        • Definitely depends on how they look in person. In all likelihood the flourescent lighting looks better than LED lighting. But maybe the extra size is important to you.

Not sure how much the power savings of the 46" LED vs the 42" Flourescent would be because I don't have power cunsumption figures for the DSE TV, but if you watch TV about 5hr a day it would be in the range of $5-$30 a year. Probably around $10-$15 a year.

I think it does mean they've done it (yet) again, seen this TV at this price so many times in the last year :P

    • Exactly what I was just thinking. We got the same TV at the same price 12 months ago. Kind of annoying that LCDs seem to have hit a price floor and aren't getting any cheaper.

I'm very happy with the Soniq 42" I got last year.
Specs look the same as the one from last year but judging from the picture it's a different model (this base is square while mine is an oval shape).
Quite tempted to get another one for a dual 42" setup for my computer…

    • That's going to be a big "azz" computer monitor!

  • What's the energy star rating?

  • Found out- 4 stars

  • I'm waiting for the 3D version again my brother lets say borrowed my Soniq 3D 42" that I got for $400 last time the deal was around.

  • Anyone aware of cracker deals for 50+" Tvs at the moment?

  • Or you can get the kogan one for about the same price after delivery. Better IMO as it is a thin form factor LED tv.

    Link: http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/42-led-tv-full-hd-usb-pvr-digita…

    • Being a thin form factor LED backlit LCD, the picture quality of the Kogan TV is probably not as good.

      • That's rather strange logic, so thinner better lighting system = worse picture? They are both cheap, don't really see one brand being better then the other our that's what your suggesting.

        • thinner better lighting system should be superior in design and spec, atleast on paper. It takes some engineering prowess to pack more into a thinner device.

    • $468 + $27 shipping = $495

Yeah, it's a smartalec TV but I'd rather spend $497 on the DSE unit with free shipping, get a 6" bigger screen & throw a $35 Raspberry Pi at the sucker…instant future-proof smartass TV with a bucketload more features! :D

      • Where can I buy a raspberry pi for $35.

        • RS or Element 14 (Farnell). Sorry, it's actually $38 in Oz…no biggie! You will still have to pay for shipping though, unless your order goes over a certain amount IIRC.

I was on the list for one of the first ones, then just as turn finally came up they announced the Rev2 board so I cancelled mine & am waiting for that.

I'm quite keen on the ability to backfeed power from the powered USB hub, & mounting holes would be handy; so a few more weeks won't hurt! :)

      • Does the "PI" have the guts to handle full HD content and internet streaming in real time?
