Samsung 8kg Heat Pump Dryer DV80TA420DE $599 Delivered @ Samsung Education Store

830

This seems like a good price for a heat pump dryer and may be a good alternative to cheap Aldi ones if you have access to the Samsung Education Store. It says that normal price is $1099, but I can't find this exact model at any other retailers.

Aldi dryer is quite good. I have it since 2018 - no complaints so far. Samsung dryer could be a bit more fancy and price is good

My Aldi dryer takes 8 hours to dry a bunch of towels. They do come out fluffy and soft though. Is this normal to take so long?

      • +5

I line dry the towels. It takes 3-4 hours in current Melbourne summer to dry and takes over a day to dry in winters. They come out rock hard.

        • I dry on a clotheshorse indoors with an air circulator fan rotating air around. Resolves the rock hard issue and dries faster.

      • Mine is 3-4 in a heat pump dryer, nice and fluffy.

My Aldi dryer takes 8 hours to dry a bunch of towels.

That's a really, really long time.
I have a Haier 8kg heat pump dryer and it takes 2 hours max for a full load of towels.

I find that the sensor doesn't always work that well with towels though, if you use the towel setting it overdries them and has been known to still be drying towels at the 3 hour mark which are already well and truly dried. I just use the cotton setting now and it's all over in about 2 hours. Towels come out nice and fluffy and fully dry.

      • My Aldi dryer takes no longer then 2.5hrs for towels fully loaded. Had one reapir just on 8 months old the belt broke around the drum was repaired with in 10 days dram free. We do 8 full loads a week can't complain for what we paid.

      • Thank you all for the feedback.

Check your filters and the condenser plate. Any lint or debris will reduce it's ability to function, sometimes severely.

      • My Beko BDP100 took 2 hours max, 90 mins usually for towels. My washer 1100rpm may help dryer towels/clothes before hand, as I don’t know why everyone took so long.

    • An appliance like this will cost far far more in power consumption than initial cost…. good to hunt for an efficient (low energy input) one. I'm not saying anything about this one..I have no idea. It has to be in front of the dinosaur tech, because it's heat pump. But like Lucky said, heat pumps ain't just heat pumps.

      • +1

The Samsung is on the list of products the Government will give a rebate for under the "Energy upgrades" scheme. Heat pumps are the most efficient type of dryer afaik.

      • +2

I have a heat pump dryer ( Fisher & Paykel) and it has 9.5 star rating. Hardly inefficient.

I bought this one pre-xmas for similar price and couldnt be happier with the dryer or the service. Got delievered in 5 days iirc. It's my first HPD so nothing to compare to, but it does what its supposed to. Dries stuff perfectly and doesn't take all that long. I don't think I've had a load take longer than 2 hours. Usually around 1 1/2 even for a bunch of towels. Probs my fave OzBargain of 2023. :) (I live a simple life)

    • emm my drying is always 1hr or less (I just have a normal westinghouse), are you packing the dryer too full or do I wash/dry smaller amounts than most people?

      • Maybe your dryer is just better than everyone elses? A lot of people I've seen posting say that HPDs are slower than others hence my post. 4 hours or longer as per the Aldi mentioned above.

      • Non-heat pump dryers run at a much higher temperature than HPD. Sure, it dries quicker, but it uses way more energy and it is harsher on your clothes.

        • ah that makes more sense, thanks for the context

Purchasing Samsung white goods is a mistake.

    • +6

      It will teach them.

    • +5

Been happy with my samsung white goods so far.

    • Yup - never again.

  • +4

Honestly Aldi's Stirling dryer would be better than getting a Samsung one. Or get a Beko - great dryers. Samsung and whitegoods has been a terrible experience for me.

      Happy with my beko!

      Has this been available recently?

  • Showing Out of stock for me

    • Yep, it seems these ones went quickly. No change in price though, so they may get more stock. It seems like Samsung store sometimes adds more stock at regular intervals for some reason.

FYI samsung washers (and all their major appliances) are frequently ranked by appliance repair guys as the most unreliable and the worst made.

    • +4

      Citation needed

      • They mix metals for one, causing galvanic corrosion, guaranteeing it will die before it should have (all their washing machines)

Our fridge died rather young too, not sure why, it's never worth fixing a Samsung as you don't know how much longer it will last, so we just replaced it instead

      • FB appliance repair groups. Quite unanimous opinion from the repair techs frequently warning to stay away from Samsung.
Miele is quality but parts are hell expensive. Bosch similar.
        LG is often recommended overall.

These guys are in the field everyday fixing them so…

        • Citation needed

          • @deme: Not needed. Know from experience. Only buy Samsung phones and tv.

            • @hippyhippy: The tv aren't that great either. Its sony or LG with tv.

    • +2

I don't have an article to quote however I did own a Samsung dryer and it died a year past warranty, got a technician out and he said too expensive to fix, buy the cheapest Bosch with least amount of electronics on the panel, 10 years later hasn't missed a beat.

      • +1

Appliances should still be eligible for a repair/replacement/refund even if the manufacturer's warranty has expired. Most whitegoods are expected to last for a number of years.

I had my Samsung tv refunded recently, about $3000 back and I got to keep the tv. Took me a few months though.

      • Under ACCC Consumer law (ACL) you could have had it repaired at no cost if it was that new.

    • +1

Could be cause there are more Samsung out there than other brands? Maybe a bit more details and citation might help your statements. While I don't disagree that this could be true, had a Samsung washing machine failed twice on me, but both times I was able to fix myself. I also had other brands failed on me like Smeg.

    • I would be more worried about the fire hazard. They had a mass recall like 8 years ago because their washers kept catching fire.

It looks like they even had more recalls in 2022 because of a software issue causing 🔥

Seems like you're cherry picking. Heres another top brand that had a big recall 6 years ago. Im sure a quick google would find similar for most bramds.

        https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2018/BSH-Home-Appliances-Expand…

        • +1

I am not cherry picking. There was a lot of actual fires caused by Samsung washing machines (multiple models).

That one Bosch dishwasher caused 5 fires, which is still not ideal.

          • @Aureus: I dont think you understand what I mean by cherry picking. Maybe throw up a link that shows that Samsung has a higher recall rate than every other brand for worse issues and I'll happily accept your point. :)

            • @Fredorishi: I do understand. I can't think of any whitegood brands that has caused so much fire. I don't have access to the data, but all of the fires is enough to put me off Samsung whitegoods.

              • @Aureus: Heres a report from consumer watchdog CHOICE on "kitchen appliannces" . 28 priducts recalled in the 5 years up until 2021. Zero of them Samsung. https://www.choice.com.au/home-and-living/kitchen/food-proce…

You will probably be interested to know they also reported on the Samsung recall. No argument it was a major issue and they handled it badly…..back in 2015. Point is. Samsung isn't the only company who has recalls. Hopefully they've lifted their game since then.

                https://www.choice.com.au/home-and-living/laundry-and-cleani…

                • @Fredorishi: Yeah.. but how many of those recalls are due to starting hundreds of fires? I don't trust Samsung whitegoods anymore, fair enough if you do.

                  • @Aureus: Well yeah, just explosion risk and kids getting internal injuries etc etc.. I guess i just prefer to be rational about these things and use some perspective. But sure. You do you and I'll do me. :)

      • I was wondering which one had the terrible reputation for self immolation….wasn't sure if SS or Like Gasoline

    • This is all just anecdotal though. I'm sure you can find people who will say anything about any brand.

My only experience is that I've had a Samsung washer that's lasted over 10 years.

  • +2

Samsung quality in whitegoods has gotten worse over the years, we stay clear of it now.. fridge and washing machine failed on us…

  • I have the Samsung 10kg heatpump hybrid dryer (late night and bad estimate in size). Monster of a machine but well worth it. If I had of seen the 8kg for this price I would've got that instead but it is what it is…
It's great Full load of washing done in a couple of hours…
I do like that with the Samsung dryer it is included in the smart things app so i get notifications when its finished.
Last dryer I had DID take 3-4 hours to dry clothes. Was NOT friendly to my wallet in power consumption…
